On cask at TH.

Served with a finger of tan head. Good retention with some lacing. Color is black.

Aroma: Super fresh espresso and a lot of it. Rich chocolate with a nice roast. Creamy. Awesome stout.

Taste: Creamy with a nice amount of roast. Big coffee. Fresh. Chocolate and cream/lactose flavors.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, roasted, and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry and roasted.

Overall, an awesome coffee stout. The coffee was spot on. Very good and drinkable.

On cask, 10/24/2010

A - Black, thick off-white to brown head, excellent lacing

S - Pungent freshly-roasted coffee, molasses, and dark chocolate - smells delicious!

T - Dark chocolate, lactose --> mild chili peppers, not too spicy --> slightly bitter earthy hops --> finish is breakfast blend coffee, smooth and mild

M - Creamy & full bodied, but not heavy per se.

D - Good drinkability - must like coffee

A different beast than the H20, but MTH proves again that it can make a delicious, easy to drink American stout. Great beer here - I'll be sure to grab one again if it's available.

Cask. 10/27/10. Pours a very dark brown with a tan head. Very strong coff aroma in the nose. Very roasty. Slightly sweet up front which very quickly becomes a shot of beer! Really coffee like. Light mouthfeel. Besides the coffee you also get some leather notes. Pretty tasty and overall one of the better coffee beers around.
*This beer, although labeled as retired was on cask on this date. The server didn't have a name for it other than Coffee Stout, hence my review on this "retired" beer.

Black and beautiful, on cask at the brewpub. Some white head andlacey. Complaint is too watered down coffee. Mouthfeel was light, it was a cold cup of it. It was bitter, there may have been a tad of chocolate but not enough to make it interesting or really drinkable. One of the weaker ones.

Tasted from Growler.

Poured a dark, dark black color with an averaged sized off white head. Main aroma and tastes of coffee. Dark chocolate, roasted malts and some dark fruits as well. This one was all about the coffee but not in a bad way (I do like coffee beers).

Served on cask at the brewpub on 10/11/08, this pours an opaque black color, with a thick creamy tan head and ample tan lacing on the glass. The smell is of coffee. The taste is of chocolate malt, with a hint of coffee added, as well as a slight bitterness. This tastes like a stout with coffee added, rather than like coffee with beer added. The difference is subtle, but the result is sublime. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy. The drinkability is outstanding. This is a very very nice effort.

Just had this on tap 4-2-07. Deep dark body topped by a medium brown head. Head retention is great - there was a thin layer of foam for the entire duration of the pint. The aroma is dominated by the coffee notes, but there’s a solid sweet malt aroma as well to support the coffee. The flavor is like sweetened coffee with cream, but then take a bit of rich dark chocolate. Just of hint of bitterness in there to balance it all out as well. I actually chose a pint of this over Masala Mama. Mouthfeel; is smooth and rich. Drinkability is very nice. A really solid offering.

On-cask at the brewpub: How gorgeous is that pour! Lovely off-matte black color with the unforgetable flow of yellowy cascade flying up the glass. The cap reaches about a finger high of oatmealy rich and thick yellowed light-tannish froth. It sits and sits, always present with a great pride of stern girth that takes a very long time to reach its final stage of thick skimming. Lacing is thick and patchy of strings all over the place.

Aroma is wonderfully displayed here. Super fine mixing of oaty sweetness, roasty edged cocoa, and a miraculous freshly ground coffee bean tone that isn't overly potent but just right in regards not to overtake the other elements of its richly demeanor.

Taste is more of the same, oh, how is this so? Umm, I don't know, but it is so. A perfect meld of flavors here, maintaining a great mild tone and character. Rich, full, smooth, and nearly perfect coffeeness to it. It reminds of a fresh Jamician blend I had that was one of the most drinkably smooth coffees I've ever had. That's what this stuff is like. Lightly sweet with some oaty factors, nice milding chocolate/cocoa dustings, and that terrificly balanced coffee sense. Very fresh and rich, I swear I was picking coffee grounds out of my teeth it seemed that fresh. Its not like that full on coffee richness found in Bell's Java Stout but is damn close. Mild yet fulfillingly yummy!

Feel is way to smooth... yikes man, its cask character is sooo nice. The warmer served temp gives it the impression of drinking a semi-warm coffee; brilliant. Mega fresh, with a heavenly smooth and rich medium body that floats across the palate and drys out ever so delicately leaving coffee beans and oaty sweetness parked around ever corner of the mouth. This stuff rocks! On-cask this was supurb. I wonder what the regualr tap would do to it?

Jet-Stout balck in color, with a creamy tan head. Smelled richly of coffee, roasted malt, and a musky scent. Tasted smooth and creamy, with almost no carbonation (it was cask). Lots of coffee flavor abound. Served cellar-temp, but for a stout, there are much better ones out there.

If you love coffee, you are going to love this beer. It was served up black with a nice brown head, and the awe inspiring cascading effect. The first wiff just hits you with the strong black coffee aromas, like a nice cup of coffee on a Sunday morning. It also has the nice roastiness in the aroma. Again in the flavor it is all coffee with the roastiness and the hops taking the background. Smooth and creamy, that is all I have to say about the mouthfeel. It is a rich, creamy beer, very good all around. I will definitely drink it again if it is still around the next time I make it to Town Hall.

A surprise and a delight went hand in hand when I saw the words "coffee" and "stout" underneath the word, "Cask" at Town Hall tonight. My favorite sub-style, on cask?? Unbelieving, I grilled the barman, who confessed that they do this "from time to time", add a little concentrated coffee grounds, in a tightly wound nylon mesh(a method I was familiar with, having used it to make cold-press coffee at a local cofee shop/ice cream cafe, years ago) to their regular Black Water Oatmeal Stout. The BlackH20 is good, but this thing is another realm altogether.
Beautiful cascading effect, from the cask, great, well-retained cocoa/tan head.
Aroma: Everything Coffee!! No other way to describe it! Real, authentic, actual coffee, placed in the confines of a very fine stout= perfection, in my eyes! Add to that it's freshly made, freshly tapped (within the past few days, at least...I was here last Wednesday, and it wasn't), cask-conditioned...
Wow! I love it, I totally, honestly love it! Smooth, but full-bodied. Huge malt, small hops, excellent texture, and overwhelming, in the best possible way, with true coffee flavor. I've died and gone to heaven, not far from home! How good is that?
Amazing! Drinkability pulled back a bit, for it was so rich and thick and flavorful that I couldn't finish my second pint. (Though it was my 6th pint of the day!) I will take every opportunity that I can to imbibe this until it leaves us again, and we must hope upon the chance of it's arrival once more!
