This beer is a work of art, or maybe a work of science, or of brewmaster wizardry.

Of the five BA beers I had at Town Halls' BA Week, this stood out the most.

Remarkable combination of cocoa/chocolate, fruit, bourbon, and more typical ale components. This is the most aromatic beer I've ever had ... mostly chocolate to the nose, with a little bourbon.

The taste is really a great balance of flavors. I liked the way the bourbon barrel was just one component of the mix, and didn't dominate the flavor profile. I loved the bourbon part of the beer, but I loved even more the way the chocolate and fruit and general ale flavors were in perfect harmony with each other, along with the bourbon.

Lovely mouthfeel. TH was serving all these BA beers pretty cold to start, so the more leisurely you can drink this, the more you'll get the fuller taste that comes with slightly warmer temperatures.

What a great beer. Reason enough to schedule a visit to Minneapolis for 2015's Barrel Aged Week.

This sounds very interesting. Pumped to try.
Served with a finger of tan head that recedes to a rather thin layer in a town hall tulip/snifter.
Smell is decidedly chocolate. Wow. Amazing. Sweet Belgian chocolate that has a bit of that added flavor aroma you get from chocolate syrups like Hershey's. There is just a hint of sweet citrus and Belgian fruitiness here too.
Taste is also fantastic. Big chocolate flavor with hints of citrus-I guess the kumquats. Some Belgian yeastiness here too.
Mouthfeel is fairly smooth not a big bodied beer. Dry finish. Fairly low carbonation.
Overall this is a damn tasty brew as the beer warms more of the barrel aged quality comes out. Would love to try a non barrel version of this one. The base beer is super.

On tap at the brewpub. Served in a Town Hall chalice glass.

Appearance: Color is a dark brownish black. Moderate amount of bubbles and about two fingers of light tan head that recede into a a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A pretty dark and sweet yeasty Belgian style aroma with big hints of chocolate and bourbon. Upfront barrel presence with hints of Bourbon whiskey, vanilla, oak, and wood. Dark roasted malt with big hints of sweet Belgian chocolate, toffee, caramel, biscuit, and toast. Belgian yeast with some slight pepper and clove hints. Fruit hints of kumquat along with some dark fruit hints of cherry, fig, raisin, and prune. A very solid aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a sweet dark and fruity Belgian style taste with big notes of chocolate and whiskey barrel. Big upfront barrel presence with notes of bourbon whiskey, oak, vanilla, and wood. Belgian yeast with some notes of black pepper and clove. Dark roasted malt with sweet notes of Belgian chocolate, toffee, caramel, toast, biscuit, grains, and straw. Sweet fruit notes of kumquat along with some dark fruit undertones of raisin, cherry, fig, and prune. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Fairly chewy, slick, and silky. Moderate alcohol heat is felt.

Overall: A very good twist on a dark Belgian ale. The big chocolate and kumquat presence adds a nice sweet kick.

Poured on tap into a tulip glass at Minneapolis Town Hall.

Dark matte brown body color, provided with a very creamy and light espresso tan topped head of a finger. Slight staying power and nice ring partial lacing while drinking. Very nice red hued accents also along the edges.

Unexpected aroma but quite delicious. Mild sensing raisin like fruit, but also real nice sweet zesty oils. Slight cocoa powder and even a bit of oude bruine like tartness but mild. Very impressive.

Palate is just explosive and a winner. Huge amounts of dark chocolate and black forest cake fruit flavors. Nearly fudgy mouthfeel, rich and velvety with hints of citrus oils but also bringing out more hits of cherries as well. Huge cocoa powder bursting finish and warmth. Controlled sensing sweetness with exceptional flavors of mixing red berries, orange, and chocolate.

Just a flat out spectacular beer.

This beer arrives a solid brown color. The head is small, but that is expected with barrel aging. The aroma is big, and complex. There is sweetness, kumquat, dates and milk chocolate. The is some sourness, and some astringency. There is some oak. It is beautiful. The taste is more barrel forward. The dark fruit, and chocolate are still there, but the astringency is gone. Wonderful. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a chewy texture, and appropriately mild carbonation. Overall, the beer kills it. Run to get it.
