As a devotee of Ireland's famous black, roasty ale, I've enjoyed stouts in uncounted variations, with myriad twists and turns, melded, mixed and married with numerous fruits, spices, berries, vegetables, nuts, beans, etcetera. So, why was I surprised by this new cask offering, why is my imagination so puny as to never predict this interesting take on the style? That's why there are brewers like Hoops, and pubs like Town Hall!

Color is a full brown, reddish around the edges, with a tidy creamy tan head atop.

Aroma is soft, creamy, with light fruitiness, and just the start of a suggestion of the work of the vine that has permeated and blended so mellifulously with this ale. (I never asked exactly how they created this masterpiece, I merely drank and enjoyed!)

Once on the mouth, pure pleasure, nothing but. Nothing really stands out, not a part steps forward, but what you have is an fine, if rudimentary stout, with the soft, sweet, but still dry-ish, and very mellow cabernet flavorings riding underneath, and coating the mouth. The combination is supreme!

This is an interesting idea, magnificently executed...hops are mild, malt is lush and luxuriant, and the finish is a never-ending delight. Texture smooth and wonderful, flavor is a consistent joy!
If this were bottled, it would set the world on fire! I'd have it by my side at every occasion I could and wave it around for all to see. (As I did last night at the anniversary party).

One fantastic beer! Another triumph for Town Hall!

Black body. Creamy light brown head with great staying power. Decent amounts of lace. The aroma is fantastic. Juicy red wine notes mix to perfection with deep roasted malt tones. A little alcohol is noted as well which blends in nicely. The flavors I perceive are chocolate, char, wine and roasty bitterness. A very agreeable combination to my palate. The "cask" feel to this is quite velvety and silky. This leads to quite the easy drinking stout. Very enjoyable.

Stout aged in a cabernet wine barrel. Mmm.

Pretty solid black, just a bit of brown at the bottom, thin coco colored head. The aroma is full of chocolate, coco powder, and charred malt, with some delicate wine textures in the background. A lot more wine in the taste, atleast at first there is a burst of dry red wine and grapes. Then the chocolatey stout flavors slowly fade in as the wine fades back. Very smooth and silky, medium to heavy body. Almost a bit milky in the aftertaste with some dry wine.

Overall: one or two of these are great sippers, but this is definitely not a session brew, a little too much wine flavor for that. Its an interesting contrast of the dark vinous grape flavors with the chocolatey stout. I liked their merlot stout that was out a few months ago a little more, it seemed a bit darker red and dry, where as the cab stout seemed a little too fruity and maybe a bit cloying. Either way this is a good beer, and more than worth a try.
