Great looking beer. Pours a motor oil black with an espresso colored head that billows upwards from the bottom of my snifter to the top of the drink, culminating in a one and a half finger head that retains for about a minute and then fades to a thin film.

Smell is outstanding. I get coconut, vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, coffee, chocolate, and whiskey. So complex. I admit that I know very little about different types of whiskeys, including bourbons, but the whiskey in this nose smells distinctly different than any other bourbon aged stout I've ever had. Good ol' Jack Daniel's.

The taste is also great. I get coffee, chocolate, vanilla, whiskey, and a nice roasty finish. Through out, I also get a subtle piney hop profile. The sweetness of the whiskey and vanilla pairs well with the bitterness of the roasts. Overall, the taste is pretty complex and balanced.

The mouthfeel is good, but for such a rich, smooth barrel aged RIS, I would have preferred if it were a bit thicker.

This drinkability on this beer is very high. So smooth through out, and never too harsh to make me want to put it down. No EtOH burn. I doubt I'll have the opportunity to try it again, but this beer was certainly worth seeking out. Support your Midwest brewers!!

Big thanks to Billab914 for providing this tasty treat at the last NOVA BA tasting.

Another fine crafted brew from the people at Minneapolis Twn Hall Brewery. Poured a black that the light could not break, dark chocolate colored head formed easily. The aroma on this brew was very nice as the dark roast powered through with hints of dark fruit. The taste was not over the top and was actually balanced for a brew of this style. The roast malt flavor powered through with molasses tones to it only to be matched with a sweet hint of chocolate pushing everything forward. The body of the brew was a medium/thick and I felt the carbonation matched great with it. Really enjoyed this brew and is another quality brew to grace my house from this renowned brewery.

Will be looking to obtain some next time around.

Vintage 2010 on-tap for Anniversary Week.

Served in a goblet a pure black with an oily brown layer of foam coating the top.

Smells very rich and sweet and bourbony. Molasses, vanilla bean, caramelized sugar and bourbon are all there.

The taste has really mellowed with the age. Lots of sweetness going on with vanilla bean, molasses, burnt sugar and cola. The bourbon is there. It's not hot and is really quite mellow and smooth. Seems the flavors have subdued over time. Still good, but not the great beer it is fresh. No alcohol detected at all, unless you want to count the bourbon flavor.

Sticky, syrupy and slick describe the feel of this brew. Full bodied.

I really enjoyed this beer, but it was just missing that little kick that it has when fresh. Still a terrific beer that really drinks easily. I could have two or three of these pretty easily. I will snare more of this the next time around.

Growler to Flute

Thanks to Sideswipe for sharing!

App- A very nice dark brown, on the border of black with a nice bubbly tan head. Nice little bits of stick and cling

Smell- Very nice stout even for sitting in the growler for so long. Chocolate with whisps of bourbon, vanilla and oak. Quite enticing.

Taste- What a great smooth stout. Pulled together wonderfully. This stout is creamy and balanced and not a punch in the mouth. A lot of chocolate and roast with touches of the barrels.

Mouth- On the border of being thick but still retains a medium body to it. The carbonation held up very well over the year this sat in sideswipes fridge.

Drink- Can't thank him enough for this growler. Super smooth and easy to sip on. Was a welcome additions to the beers I have got to try. Watch out MN, if I am ever at town hall I am taking the tap.

64oz growler filled on 3/5/13 split six ways and poured into Teku Glass. Consumed on 3/14 and reviewed from notes.

A- Pours a midnight black with about a fingers worth of light mocha brown head that recedes a moderate pace leaving some light spotty lacing, recedes to a flat top.

S- Dark chocolate with some light oak, vanilla, and a slight sweet bourbon presence. Not overly aromatic with some light booze present but not bad for being almost 10%. Overall aroma is pretty nice but could have had more potential.

T- Dark creamy chocolate, coconuts, vanilla some light oak and fairly light bourbon. Well balanced with nice rich flavors although bourbon could have come out a little bit more.

M- Very smooth, lightly creamy, medium bodied, nice carbonation, very easy drinking.

O- This was a very nice barrel-aged RIS that definitely did not disappoint. It was very easy drinking and had some nice rich creamy flavors with a fairly nice balance. I would love to try this again and I wish they could bottle it more regularly (without it being infected).

Appearance: Pours from the growler a dark brown, near black body with a scant, ecru-hued head.

Smell: Nose of well-roasted malts wrapped up with a downright inviting, welcoming bourbon-soaked aroma. Supported by notes of chocolate chunks, espresso, vanilla syrup, toasted oak, and dark fruit.

Taste: Roasted maltiness with tastes of strong coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Fairly full sweetness overall. Sweet caramel, a slight dark fruitiness, a minute toastiness, and a light hint of vanilla are secondary, subservient even to these bolder flavors. Well-integrated Jack Daniels character. Warming, semi-dry finish with an enduring roastiness.

Mouthfeel: The medium-full body you'd expect from a RIS, with the medium-low carbonation you'd expect from a growler.

Drinkability: Good stuff and one I'd certainly recommend to fans of barrel-aged stouts. So, do yourself a favor and be sure to get a glass or two if a growler of it should happen to cross your path.
