Hazed crimson. Stained off-white head. Lace is sporadic. Aroma is nice. Light smoke phenols. Chocolate malts. Banana and spicy black pepper. Taste is slightly phenolic. Chocolate tones underneath the spice and clove and banana. Nice doughy breadiness as well. Everything blends together pretty nicely. Mouthfeel has a nicely restrained amount of carbonation. Medium body. Solid beer. Interesting combo.

I am going to keep this short. It was a good beer, but only one a night is good.

The smell was simply awesome, reminded me of smoking meat while growing up in the northland. The flavory was really smooth and smoky. As my roomate pointed out, 'Hmmmm, this would go good with a smoked cheddar.'

I would suggest giving a try if you are in the area.

On-tap at the brewpub: Not sure what color to call this stuff. Its semi opaque, kinda copper, kinda bronzed, kinda rusted, I'll just say orange-brown. Soft, creamy, small, cap of off-white foam. Some spotty lacing.

Aroma is tangy and mildly set with a salted smoked meat with a nice wheat bread doughy background. Fresh and snappy with that weizen character that one would and should expect out of a good dunkel.

Quite tasty. Perfect smokey salted meat tang on top of one nice array of dark wheaty snap and hold of fresh bread dough. Nice and snappy, nice and lengthy on the buds and one smooth ride of easy going flavors.

Feel is tangy with wheat and smoke wrapped in a smooth, snappy, medium body. Well rounded with a decent crescendo from start to finish. Tends to be more active in the middle, then fades off into the finish leaving the dark wheaty bread dough and weizen spices to do their thing.

A very nice dunkel. Tangy and flavorful with a interesting snap to it that exceeds the norm for the style. Seemingly un-dunkel-like, but somehow works altogether anyways. Another Hoops masterpiece.

I had a pint of this at one at the brewpub and took a growler home. This review is from the growler.

Appearance: This beer pours a nice, hazy orange-brown color with a small off-white head that fades to a thin cap quickly.

Smell: Smoky with a little "grassy" aroma as well.

Taste: The smokiness hangs throughout the taste. It is a nice quality to add to the traditional dunkelweizen flavor.

Mouthfeel: Not too thin, not to thick. A little maltiness on the tongue.

Drinkability: Pretty darn good. It is a little strong (abv-wise) for a session beer, but it is easy to put two or three of these in you. I will try to get more before it is all gone and will try it again when it comes back around.

Recommended.

Don't have a lot of info on this one. As the brewer said, "the beer speaks for itself"...and so, we go...

Dark maghogany, burned crimson, lovely, lovely color, big, full flush head, creamy toned...nice lookin' dunkel!

Nose is full of fruit and some spice, rich and luscious...minor smoke, though. Bubbling burgundy, mixed with wheat. Grapes and berries met with smooth weizen character.

Taste: yum, and the smoke hits the tongue like a slap. Taste again: full invasion of the mouth, the fruit floods and smoke slinks behind and coats the palate. Still, as minor in the mouth as in the nose, despite that initial spank.

Easy drinking, big flavor, delicious dunkelweizen-ness...yums, yummy, yumsers...

the growler will be gone this evening, I can handily predict...
