Saison isn't a style rich in tradition at Town Hall. Their numbers over the brewery's history doesn't compare in the smallest to the pale ales, IPAs, double IPAs, smoked porters, fruity wheats, or myriad bourbon-barrel batches that they are famous for.

A quick look on BeerAdvocate.com shows only this one among the 121 "active" beers listed, and in the "archive" section, there are only 2 among the 250 in that category, one simply called Saison, first released in June 0f 2006, and a Barrel-aged Belgian Saison from 2009. They were long overdue in releasing another one.

So, I brought a growler of this one home recently, and here are the notes:

Clear, straw gold coloring, nice white head that drips down to nil in no time.

Aroma: light spice, citric notes, lemon mainly, minor hops, crisp malt.

Taste: Hey, there's rye in there! Just enough to bring on the spice. Plenty of it, actually. Malt's on the mild side, just enough rye, though, to bring on the pumpernickel. Good drinking, this one. With a never-quite-quitting fruity flavor, ending nice and dry. Nice. And. Dry. Ah….

Looks nice. Straw gold body with a noisy but stubborn paper white head. Appropriate lace.

Aggressive rye earthiness, pale fruits and spice.

Dry, clean farmhouse flavors. Clove and apple skin. Alcohol is well integrated and approachable. Well executed.

64 oz. growler bought from the brewpub with a date of July 15, 2013. Poured into a Town Hall Chalice glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of rising bubbles. About two fingers of white head that quickly fade away. Leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass.

Smell: A nicely fruity and spicy Belgian style saison aroma with a nice grainy backing. Belgian saison yeast with hints of farmhouse funk. Pepper hints from grains of paradise. Fruity hints of citrus orange and lemon zest along with some banana and bubble gum. Bready malts with hints of wheat, grains, biscuit, and rye spice. Light candied sugar hints as well. Smells crisp, nicely fruity, spicy, and fairly dry.

Taste: Follows the nose, a nicely crisp and dry Belgian style saison with good notes of fruit, spices, and grainy malt. Belgian saison yeast upfront with some farmhouse funk and grains of paradise giving a good dose of spicy pepper taste. Fruit notes of citrus orange and lemon along with some banana. Also some bubble gum and candied sugar notes. Bready malts with a taste of wheat, biscuit, grains, and spicy rye. Very crisp, zesty, and tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. Very crisp and smooth. Fairly prickly and drying.

Overall: A very good interpretation of the Belgian Saison style. Lighter bodied for the style making it a nice crisp summer beer. Good zesty fruit taste with some nice spicy notes.
