An aggressive pour reveals a beer that is black in the body with some leakage to mahogany on the edges and a dark tan head. Check for the style.

The nose is char, milk chocolate, THE BARREL (caps on purpose), and a fruity aroma I'll say is strawberry, though I don't necessarily get that note no matter how hard I try.

The taste ..... decadent. The barrel is up front, but the milk chocolate cuts that immediately, and then the strawberry joins this big beer dance party. I didn't get it on the nose, but it is present and accounted for on the taste. The vanilla also makes a guest appearance, courtesy of the barrel.

The mouthfeel is to style, which is imperial stout masquerading as a dessert beer. I'm glad I bought a 4-pack of this, because it is worthy of visiting again and again.

Not retired per description. An excellent dessert stout, significantly better than its non ba namesake. The aging, roast, barrel, and booziness perfectly balance out an otherwise very sweet base beer. What you’d expect from a high end ba stout, without the fanfare. Not as heavy as other ba imperials - again due to the sweetness of the base, but great dessert sipper and a complement for spicy food. A very pleasant surprise and one to try.

A: dark, jet black with a thin tan head

S: roasted malt, sweet caramel, and sweet lactose. Some leather and oak, with a hint of tannins and vanilla

T: sweet milk, roasted malt, and bourbon. Milk chocolate and a big sticky sweetness. A hint of earthy hops as well

M: full, sticky mouthfeel with low carbonation. Feels heavy for 6%

O: a bit sweet from the milk, which is to be expected. The barrel is not overwhelming, and helps to balance out

2016 vintage poured into a tulip

A- pours nearly opaque black in color with a one-finger creamy khaki colored head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- charred malt and bourbon barrel on the nose up front, followed by undertones of chocolate, just a trace of vanilla and strawberry

T- plenty of barrel up front with bourbon and wet oak, followed by notes of milk chocolate. The finish adds a touch of vanilla cream and lingers of more barrel and charred malt. I might be able to taste strawberry if I try hard enough

M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a slick finish

O- barrel and chocolate for the most part, hard to find vanilla and strawberry. But it's very flavorful, given the abv

2016 bottle into mini snifter.

Lower viscosity dark liquid with a descent foam head upon pour. Smell is a bit faint and not very indicative of the great taste. The taste definitely delivers on what this beer is supposed to be: vanilla, chocolate and berries. It completely pulls of the Neapolitan taste. There isn't much in the way of the barrel but flavor is still very pronounced of rest of the sweet ingredients. It has a very smooth end and a feel of a beer with more than just 6.1% abv.

This is a very nice dessert stout that won't wreck you at its manageable abv. Would pick up again.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 4/4/16, had 1/25/17.

Pours a very dark brown, although a bit cola looking, somewhat opaque with a half inch, quickly dissipating head some spotty lacing. Smells of strawberry, vanilla, lightly roasted malt, some chocolate, oak, light coffee, faint bourbon- more as it warms, some smoke. The strawberry pops first in the flavor, as well. Vanilla, malt, bourbon, oak, some caramel and molasses, lighter chocolate than the nose. Smooth, a good, medium body, an appropriate amount of carbonation.

Does a great job of presenting the individual Neapolitan flavors and, especially, the aromas. Could use a little more barrel. Biggest negative about this, is the really high price per bottle it retails for.

A twelve ounce bottle dated 04/14/16 poured in a 13oz. snifter.

Look- Pours a thin but oily looking cola brown leaving a few centimeters of tan foam. No lacing is left as it settles, but there is an oily film clinging to the glass.

Smell- Bourbon, strawberries and a hint of vanilla.

Taste- Smooth bourbon, strawberries and vanilla all melded together. A hint of oak in the finish.

Feel- It's on the thin side for a milk stout, but there is a redeeming creamy smoothness to it.

Overall- Wonderful flavor for a barrel aged stout weighing in on the lighter side at 6.1%. I wish the price was friendlier than the $5.99/12oz. bottle charged around here. That aside, it's definitely worth a try.

Poured into a snifter.
A - Pours a clear dark brown with a small head that disappears quickly.
S - Aroma is weak but what is there is oak with a bit of fruit sweetness.
T - Flavor is woody, some vanilla and a bit of strawberry.
M - Medium carbonation and mouth feel.
O - A very balanced barrel aged milk stout with some interesting flavors.

Tasted in a Spiegelau stout glass from a 12 oz bottle on December 17, 2016. I like this beer but the barrel aging overwhelms the other flavors. Not bad by any means just what I expected or hoped for. 2016 vintage is 6.1% abv.

The Saugatuck B.C. phase of the Bottle Backlog eradication here at Chez Woody continues with a bit of a curiosity. I am not huge on sweet beers, so this will be thought provoking as I must rate to style, not to taste.

From the bottle: "Limited Release"; "3 Bites in Every Sip!"

A Pop! of the cap, a heavy-handed pour & I was off and running! Following an initial pseudo-cascade, it suddenly blossomed forth with three-plus fingers of foamy, rocky, light-tan head that arose briefly, gave what seemed like an exhalation and fell to wisps. Wow! Color was solidly Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose smelled strongly of coconut, which to me, says a bourbon barrel was involved. Mmmmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but bigger and fuller than their earlier Blueberry Maple Stout. It helps to have a point of reference. The taste was rather riotous, with the chocolate and strawberry being the dominant ice cream flavors, but overlain with the coconut flavor of the bourbon. I especially liked that it was neither sweet nor hot, either of which could have been a possibility. It was a great admixture of a number of flavors, frankly. The finish was semi-sweet, sort of, and I got the vanilla flavor on the back end with the bourbon simply lingering. Rotating? Limited? Annual? I dunno, but if I see it again, I am buying several, with at least one to be cellared.

Aroma is dominated by oak and vanilla, caramel, bourbon, with a sharp contrast of strawberry and a touch of cocoa.

Flavor reveals strong strawberry character throughout, with underlying vanilla and cocoa and a barrel dryness to counter the sweet impression.

I did a side by side with the Imperial BA version and there is a drastic difference between the two, including in appearance. This has a large, retaining light tan head with an oily black body.

Smell is roasted malt, chocolate, light oak, with strawberry and vanilla ice cream. In other words, the Neapolitan aspect comes through nicely in aroma up front.

Taste is tangy strawberry, almost spicy, like sorbet. This comes first as if ushered forth by the oak. A little booze follows, with walnut and light mocha. The flavor does degrade over time, as opposed to the Imperial version which is very impressive on that front.

Feel is tangy, medium to full body, with a light froth.

This is really good lighter barrel aged stout that I've been wanting to have for awhile.
The appearance is pretty much pitch black with a bit of light coming through the bottom.
The aroma is chocolate, vanilla and strawberry sweetness along with bourbon and oak but it is not super assertive.
The taste is more bourbon forward with the vanilla being prominent. Then the chocolate and strawberry follow nicely.
The palate is medium with a nice lingering sweetness that mixes with the barrel nicely.
Overall this is a really good yet drinkable beer that doesn't let the base beer be overpowered by the bourbon. Very good.

Pours a pretty black beer (despite the abv) with over a finger of mocha head.

Aroma is a great mixture of sweet dessert qualities and bourbon barrel. Get carmel, vanilla, milk chocolate, artificial strawberry, toffee, charred oak, sweet oak, and roasted malt.

Taste is so complex. Just straight milk chocolate, vanilla, carmel, toffee, and bourbon barrel quality (maybe some strawberry). Barrel and adjuncts in the beer are working together. So good!

Medium body. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.

Yep this beer is so good. Cheers!

12oz bottle, no batch or date, poured into a Prairie Artisan Ales "Dino" stemmed glass. Enjoyed on 10.8.16, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a deep black color, opaque and thick with a khaki head, two fingers high that has decent retention and lace. The aroma is really barrel forward, lots of oak, charred wood, bourbon, dark bitter chocolate, a touch of vanilla light roasted grain and some soft fruit sweetness. The barrel definitely dominates the nose and doesn't let a lot of the base beer really shine. The flavors are very similar, chocolate and vanilla definitely pop at first, a touch of berry fruit flavor but loads of bourbon barrel really rushes over the tongue, charred oak, toffee forward bourbon, light roasted character with a sweeter lactose presence, but the base milk stout has a lot of present roast to it. The mouthfeel is okay, a bit lighter, definitely showing that it's a lower ABV milk stout and not the giant, rich, double stouts that most folks are accustomed to. Higher carbonation, thinner with a drier finish.

Verdict: A nice stout, but missing that strong strawberry character that the base beer has and the barrel really dominates this beer. It's drinks easily and serves it's purpose as a good dessert beer, but there is a lot of room for improvement here.

Light black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a fingernail of brown resting on top. The nose is an interesting and highly enticing mélange of sweet bourbon, strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. I taste a hefty dose of chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla with some sweet bourbon notes in the back of the palate. The mouth is very dry and smooth considering the strength. I like a good milk stout and/or dessert beer and this is truly worth seeking out.

The barrel aging takes a sweet stout and adds all the right characteristics. It tones down the sweetness and brings forward the bourbon flavors. This is a great improvement on a decent milk stout.

Poured out as a deep brown color with a thin tan head on top. The smell of the beer is a little sweet on the nose some strawberry and vanilla come through. The taste has more of the chocolate with some subtle strawberry and vanilla coming through. The feel is full bodied, softly carbonated and oily. Overall this beer was pretty rad, I dug it.

Great looking beer. Black in color, with just a tiny bit of light sneaking through the edges. Fluffy light brown head with very good retention/lacing for the style. The aroma is fairly subdued. Chocolate, roast, and a slight berry sweetness. Barrel character is minimal. The neapolitan flavors really come through on the taste. Rich fudgey chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Again, the barrel notes are subdued, a faint hint of oak. The body is medium full with low-moderate carbonation. Extremely smooth and a nice balanced finish. Overall, I'm impressed, excellent beer!

Pours very dark brown, with a thin, tan head. No carbonation.
Smells of very sweet malt with bourbon smell very present. Chocolate notes come late.
Chocolate, then strawberry, then vanilla...how in the world do they do that? The sweet bourbon boozy taste adds to it. Finish with slight bite.
A thinner mouth feel than I expected, great taste.

Pours well with appropriate carbonation and medium tan head which quickly dissipates. Aroma of strawberry, slight vanilla and hints of booze. Great mouthfeel. Starts off with flavors of strawberry, vanilla and hints of chocolate with a slight boozy finish. The barrel adds complexity to the original and makes it less candy/fake. An adult version so to speak.

Nice creamy mocha 1 Finger head, fades at a med pace, little lacing, just about pitch black.

Nose some jammy strawberry muted from the original, dried strawberries, some regular vanilla, faint cocoa, lactose, touch porter, no barrel.

Taste brings mild barrel touch vanilla oak and faint whisky, little cocoa, very little strawberry, touch vanilla, little choc, fudge porter like, creamy lactose. Finish little bitter roast, creamy feel, touch lactose, touch dried strawberry.
Mouth is med bod, little creamy, decent carb.

Overall not bad, not ad good as the original, all the characters were muted and barrel was also light.

Shared with JLindros. Received as an extra in a trade.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown with a good one finger mocha head that fades to leave light lacing and a good thin blanket.

S - Aromas of very light barrel notes, no real whiskey or anything, lighter chocolate, faint vanilla, strawberries are muted jam notes. Barrel seemed to mute everything.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, finally some nice barrel notes, good light bourbon, the vanilla is super faint, same as the chocolate, rather muted. The strawberries are still a bit artificial, and now they're muted by the barrel.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, a bit thin.

O - Overall this was a solid beer, however, the base beer minus the barrel was much better. The barrel detracts from this one big time.

12 oz. bottle, bottled 04/14/16 printed on the label. 2016 vintage. My third barrel-aged beer from Saugatuck; acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop. Label on this year's vintage lists a 6.10% abv.

Poured into a Big Eddy snifter glass.

A - Blackish on the pour, with hues of brown showing near the surface. One finger of creamy chocolate-tan head that stays awhile and leaves very nice spotty lacing behind. Looks very nice.

S - Good barrel aromatics: notes of oak wood, mustiness, whiskey, with good notes of the trifecta pulling through (smooth creamy notes of strawberry, chocolate, & vanilla all come through distinctly).

T - Taste follows the nose: smooth & creamy with notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, bourbon, oak wood, mustiness, and some mild notes of tart strawberry / cherry / dark vinous fruit pulling through on the finish.

M - Feel is smooth, milky, creamy, with notes of residual chocolate & fudge lingering. Mild notes of alcohol warmth on the finish, also. Not hot, boozy, or astringent. Medium-full bodied, hefty, with decent thickness. Slick carbonation.

Overall, a nice barrel-aged version of their classic Neapolitan milk stout, though not the best barrel aged beer I've had from Saugatuck. Look forward to trying future vintages.
