12oz bottle, part of the current Saugatuck mixed pack - yet another saison, big whoop. Why does this one sound like a movie in which Matthew McConaughey would star?

This beer pours a mostly clear, very pale golden straw colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some decently dense coral reef atoll lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of zesty Belgian yeast, buttered white bread, rainbow peppercorn spice, some indistinct, but certainly stinky funkiness, stale banana cream pie, and very subtle leafy and earthy hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy wheat malt, a kind of weak-seeming Low Countries yeastiness, more thankfully lessened buttery unpleasantness, faint black and white pepper dust, ephemeral earthy funk, wet banana chips, a hint of sugary citrus, and more tame leafy, earthy, and weedy hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly understated in its barely-there frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and quite pithy and clammy in its wan attempt at smoothness. It finishes well off-dry, that buttered bread thing from the aroma never far from my consciousness.

Overall, this falls right in line with the brown ale from these guys that I had a few days ago - something ain't right in Saugatuck Town, and even if it's limited to this mixed pack, that is something to be concerned about - maybe I'll get around to telling them about it, little ol' me.

Saugatuck Brewing Co. "Daze On Saison"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "PKGD 041317" and sampled on 073117
$2 @ Giant, Havertown, PA

Look: Its hazy straw-gold body teems with lively plumes of tiny bubbles beneath a two, and then one, finger-thick head of bright white. Solid sheets of lacing are left behind, showing thicker rings that mark each sip taken.

Smell: Spicy, a little medicinal, clove-like, lightly fruity with apple, mildly yeasty/mineralish, and subtly sweet.

Taste: The flavor delivers a bit of tanginess and lots of apple, but also some orange and perhaps berry, and the previously mentioned clove and soft spice. The malt that's there is quite light, and basic, and lightly sweet. The yeasty mineral component is quite limited and only appears in the gently acidic, dry finish.

Feel: Light-medium in body and gently effervescent with a very fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation.

Overall: Interesting, but not compelling. Light in character overall, but enjoyable.

Short Review. This is a good and sessionable saison. All the key the flavors and aromas are there, but they are just a little lighter than I would normally found in the style. all the flavors worked well with each other and it wasn't as spicy as the style normally is. I would for sure by this beer again when I want a nice sessionable Saison.

I like that we are getting new & different beers from Saugatuck B.C. here in southcentral PA, so I try to keep an eye out for new arrivals. I recently snapped this one up at the Friendly Greek Bottle Shop.

From the bottle: "Illustrated by @Crocodilesoutlate".

I did some in-bottle agitating before Pop!ping the cap since it is a Saison & cloudiness is to be expected. I gave it a heavy-handed pour just to be sure, resulting in a mountainous three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, bone-white head with great retention. Color was a cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5), making the beer look like a glass of lemon meringue pie. I had to wait for a little bit for the head to eventually settle, but once it did, I was able to lean in for a sniff. Nose held the light barnyard funkiness of Saison with a slight lemony tartness. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very citrusy for a Saison! I got lemon and orange especially, along with the previously noted funkiness. Warming, I began to also get a peppery bite coming through. I would be remiss if I did not mention the dense, sticky lacing that formed as I drank through it. Finish was dry, but not so dry as to be off-putting. I am not a huge fan of Saisons, but this was certainly drinkable & even rather enjoyable.

A - Pours a hazy straw yellow with a two finger foamy white head. Nice amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is Belgian yeast, white pepper and orange peel.

T - The taste is orange peel, tangerine, lemon zest, pale malts, Belgian yeast, white pepper with some light floral hops in the finish.

M - Light body with medium carbonation. Nice crisp mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O - This was a pleasant suprise. Very crisp and easy drinking will a nice balance of flavors.

Pours a hazy, straw color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of slight pungent herbs, wheat, bacterial funk, slight yeast, hint of hops, and a hint of pungent citrus. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong yeast, bacterial funk, pungent citrus, wheat, hint of hops, and a hint of pale malt. Overall, average Saison except for the pungency which I am still vacillating on whether it is a detraction.

Smells of brad, spice, Belgian yeast funk. Taste is light body, with a peppery aftertaste. If this is dry hopped, it's very subtle and just contributes to the spicy aftertaste. Hops are just there to balance out the malt profile. This is a wonderful, lower ABV, Saison you should seek out if you are a fan of the style.

Clear, pale yellow...huge, towering white head. Brilliant. The smell is light, but with a spicy (clove) and fruit (apple peel) scent. Very carbonated. The taste is balanced, soft, and has a little twang. Medium-light in body. The carbonation has a bit of a bite. Enjoyable.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/16/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden straw color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, pear, peppercorn, light pine, light cracker/bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/floral hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, pear, peppercorn, light pine, light cracker/bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of yeast spiciness and light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, pineapple, pear, peppercorn, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/floral hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from yeast spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly grainy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice dry hopped saison! All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/floral hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Hazy gold with good head. Tropical citrus hop nose. Lighter body, medium carbonation. Slight drying saison yeast notes. Gets funkier as it warms.
