Doing a side by side with non-imperial BA version, this pours stark black, almost purple, with an instantly dying head that never returns, which is a stark contrast to regular.

Smell is nutty and woody, with oily chocolate. The strawberry seems all but gone, but only at first. The smell blooms as it warms, unlike regular, with strawberry popping more and more.

However, in taste, strawberry is much stronger right up front, even moreso than regular, with vanilla and roasty--nearing soy sauce--chocolate malt, really making this clearly Neapolitan inspired. The flavor builds over time, trumping the regular BA version in every way.

It is a little more boozy and hot, with maybe a little less body. Tingly.

Nice creamy almost 1 finger head fades at a fair pace, little lacing but big legs.

Nose decent strawberry, frozen thawed strawberry, toasted malts, little biscuit, earthy vanilla, little earthy raw cocoa nibs, pretzel dough, decent vanilla oak barrel, touch whisky, strawberry gets better as it goes.

Taste brings lush creamy cocoa milk stout, little bitter roast, dark choc notes, little creamy lactose notes, mild vanilla barrel, touch whisky, biscuity cocoa, mild strawberry, freeze dried strawberry. Finish dry lactose creamy, little bitter roast, cocoa, faint barrel, more strawberry finally, touch vanilla.

Mouth is med to fuller bod but a bit thin, decent carb very little booze.

Overall not bad, Nice base beer, strawberry was much lighter this time though, barrel wasn't bad but too light, decent overall.

Shared with JLindros. Received in a trade.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black hue with a good one finger mocha head that fades to leave thin blanket.

S - Aromas of nice chocolate, light vanilla, cocoa nib, the strawberry jam is there, pleasant, nice barrel notes too.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, nice fudgy chocolaty, light vanilla, good barrel notes, good bourbon. The strawberry is much more subtle. Light jam, decent berry, still though, the barrel masks it.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, alcohol is hidden nicely, though it is a bit harsh.

O - Overall this is a solid beer, good berry notes and chocolate, the barrel is faint. Solid beer!

This was first year having the Imperial Barrel Aged Neapolitan Milk Stout and it blew me away. I've had the regular, BA version (2015) and Oppermann's BA version (2015) and this is next level. Wish all of Saugatuck BA neo stouts were the imperial version because it is something I highly recommend trying. Was brewery only release glad to have picked up a case to share. Amazing stuff right up with with all the BA big stouts out there.

Aged 10 months in Buffalo Trace barrels. This "big brother" of BA Neo packs a heftier punch, but you still get all of the same great flavors of the original.
