Neapolitan Milk Stout | Saugatuck Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, the head's three fingers thick and tan, with solid lacing, and a black body.

Smells like strawberry and vanilla added to the chocolatey bits of a conventional stout just may have this brew live up to its ambitious title. Let's find out...

Oh ya, this is spot on! Nothing is fighting for attention here, either. A very smooth blend with an easy finish.

Heavier mouthfeel with mild carbonation.

I'll rate Neapolitan Milk Stout | Saugatuck Brewing Company with an overall 4.5. This is truly a dessert of a brew.

I'm a sucker for milk stouts. Ever since I tried Saugatuck's Blueberry Maple Stout, I've been hooked, both on Saugatuck brewery, and on stouts in general! This stout is very enjoyable, and smells exactly how you would imagine it does, like a big ol' bowl of ice cream in front of you. There's no way the flavor would be able to match the alluring smell, but it comes pretty darn close. The feel is very heavy, and the taste is very sweet, and quite chocolately. Depending on the type of night you're going for, this can be a good or a bad thing. I enjoy this stout immensely, but I can only drink one at a time, because of the sweetness. If you haven't tried it yet, I enjoy the Blueberry Maple Stout just a bit more, because of my ability to drink multiple of them. The sweetness is not quite as overwhelming as it is for this one. That is not so much a diss to this beer, but a compliment to their Blueberry Maple Stout. I can't say enough good things about it! This one is also a bit more expensive, at around 10 bucks for a 4-pack (Vs 10 bucks for a 6 pack of the blueberry stout, so that one always takes the cake for me).

Poured 12 oz bottle into snifter. Basic black with thin 1 finger tan head and minor lacing. Nose does have the distinct aroma of strawberry and chocolate reminiscent of neapolitan ice cream. Flavor is more milk stout like with some swiss cocoa and hints of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry. It is not overly sweet, light bitter. Medium creamy body and light carbonation which is on par for a milk stout.

DATE: December 30, 2017... OCCASION: Celebrating a Penn State Fiesta bowl win with a dessert beer and Episode VII... GLASSWARE: Samuel Smith tulip pint... pours a dark velvet-black body with a healthy brown half-finger head rife with bubbles... strikes an impossible aroma of strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla, with the lactic attraction of a sweet stout... lightly toasted malts incline a welcoming milky promise... the effervescent quality suggests an ice ream float: smooth, silky---like liquid marshmallow... the sugars in this are appreciable but not insulting... caramel, brown sugar, milk chocolate, light vanilla, light earthiness and the swish of strawberry... quite a smorgasbord for the palate and a dessert in its own right.... this twelve-pack sampler is definitely worth taking a flier on...

Pours opaque dark brown in color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is cocoa, vanilla and light strawberry. Medium bodied and carbonation, sweet. Makes for a unique dessert stout.

Bought this at 8.99 a four-pack and had low expectations. Pours dark brown; minimal light brown head. No sticky lacing. Aroma is a surprising chocolate and strawberry ice cream. Taste is chocolate up front with hints of coffee and strawberry and even less of vanilla. Feel is light-medium bodied, with slightly higher than average carbonation for a milk stout. Overall, I thought this was very good. I would be interested to see how this would evolve if aged in bourbon barrels to bring out a little bit more of the vanilla. For the price, I'd say it's well worth trying. Nothing really to dislike about it - and if you are afraid of fruitiness in your beer, don't stray away from this just yet, the strawberry is relatively minimal, and at worst, is a nice touch.

Saugatuck Brewing Company "Neapolitan Milk Stout"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "PKGD 100617" and sampled on 112717
$2.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I've been hesitant to drink this as it seems a little weird, but at the same time I don't want to let it get any older so here we go... it's poured an opaque brown-black body that shows a thin bit of clear dark mahogany at the base of the glass. The head is two fingers thick, and started as bubbly tan but settled into a densely creamy cap. The aroma suggests a little bit of strawberry, and some roastiness, but is overall fairly mild. The flavor delivers a lot more strawberry and a distinct roastiness as well. It's almost ashy and kind of charred. Almost dark roast coffee-like. I was going to say "but without the nuttiness' but there is some nuttiness to it, and chocolate as well. I didn't think this was going to work but it does, although I still feel the roastiness is a little unusual. I thought it would be more chocolate-vanilla-strawberry and the roastiness throws that off a little. The strawberry is very nice though. But what about the vanilla? It's in there. It's not too strong, I get it mainly in the finish where it lingers a bit. I guess it has a hard time fighting its way through everything else upfront. It doesn't seem that bitter, and oh, I just noticed that it's 6.0% alcohol by volume, jeez! It doesn't taste like it. I'm not finding any alcohol. Looking back the head has dropped to a very thin surface covering and thicker collar, and the lacing that's been left behind is very nice. Body? Hmmm, I'd call it medium, maybe medium leaning toward medium-light. And it's got a nice, very fine-bubbled moderate carbonation that leaves it smooth. Overall I'd call it a dessert beer but it also works as a regular beer in some ways. I wouldn't want to have one all of the time, but maybe on the weekend while preparing dinner one of these would be nice. Interesting.

Surprised by the success of this combination, because normally ice cream strawberry doesnt mix well with beer.
Not so here, where we get an original and heroic combination.
a) I look for more lasting and creamy head and lace than founder here, but it's solid.
s) Exceptional creamy aroma of vanilla and berry set off by sufficient char, and heft, to balance.
t) Likewise, the sweet and flavorful additions are tempered by a roast char body, that's solid malt, roast, wood, pepper, and charcoal.
f) A bit thinner than I like, but more flavor and punch that a 6.0 abv,
Best beer of their lot? Did not like their flavored stouts otherwise.
