Bottle: Poured a light black color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and some light lacing. Aroma of stale earthy hops with light dry roasted malt is not very good. Taste is also dominated by stale hops with unrefined grainy notes and light dry bitter finish. Body is a bit thin with good carbonation. Definitely below par for the style IMHO.

December 2011: 330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Lovely aroma of fruity hops (citrus, tropical fruits), also roasted malts and mild coffee. The medium dry flavour has also a mix of fruity hops and roasted malts, smooth first, then a pronounced hoppy and roasty bitterness in the finish. Good stuff, very drinkable for its strength

Dark black colour with a decent head of cappucino foam. It doesn't last long however, making it look too much like a coke. Lacing is nice though. Hoppy smell mixed with flavours like caramel, milk chocolate and liquorice. The hops don't seem to be the american aroma kind, more the classic english/continental type. It's not flowery/fruity, more herbal/piney. Lots of dark malt, caramel, liquorice, coffee and more pine in the taste. The mix of caramel/liquorice/hop bitterness make it reminiscent of a dutch herfstbok actually. Flavour is intense, complex and balanced, very nice. Mouth feel is full bodied and soft. A very enjoyable beer, but I think hardcore black IPA-lovers might miss the aroma hops in here.

Found this to be quite a balanced beer. Piney and citrusy on the nose with chocolate and roast in the background. On the palate the flavour comes through similarly with an assertive hop bite up front. Chocolate, coffee and dark fruit flavours follow

A very good black IPA. A sweet taste remains after the hoppy aroma. Recommended for black IPA drinkers!

12 ounce bottle brought back by from the Netherlands by a relative.

This was quite solid. It didn't blow me away, but it was highly enjoyable, verging on excellent.

I only wondered if this could have a little more grain to the taste and slightly less dankness to the hops. Caught hints of that dry grainy flavor, which could maybe have been pulled out even more--but then again, this is an IPA, even if it's a type in which grains factor strongly. That's what I love about the potential in a black IPA. It's a delicate balance when done smartly, not purely a close-your-eyes-and-can't-tell-it's-black goal. This bottle did an admirable job moving toward that complexity, even if it wasn't perfect.

Bottle purchased by the fiancee for your anniversary as a surprise. Thanks Jola!

This one pours a fairly dark black, with a creamy white head, and lots of lacing.

At this age, this trending more towards black ale than IPA- which is just fine. There still is some residual hoppiness here, mainly some pine aromas, with smoke aromas as well, some chocolate and day old coffee.

This is a pretty good black IPA, but doesn't stand out a whole lot in the kind of wacky style. There's some mild piney hoppiness, creamy chocolate, dark smoke, roasted malt, and old stale coffee. It works but I'm not sure I'll ever seek it out again.

This has a very creamy mouthfeel, with a lower level of carbonation.

Not too bad, but not great.

Very hoppy dark. Taste more of an IPA than of a dark beer.

Color is very dark, head is thin and off white.
Smell is hoppy and bitter, with hints of the slightly sweet malt.
Taste is IPA-ey, with strong hops, and a hint of red fruits.
Dry sweetness underlying the hops.

Overall probably the most "by-the-book" Black IPA you can find out there, a less original version than some : a very bitter, hoppy dark. Unlike a Brusseleir for example, which is almost stouty by some aspects (whereas Senne's Stouterik is probably closer to this than Brusseleir...!).
