Pours out a dark brown with a tan headskie... Tastes with the burnt sharpness of stout- good balance. Sweetness, yes that too. Easy to drink with a nice finish. Otter Mon bring me another, mon. A take on the Jamaican Stout, and worth a plunge. Another great stop on the world tour.

purchased in 22 oz bottle from Ward's Supermarket

A: pours a very dark brown with a thin head that quickly disappears

S: clean but slightly smokey roasted grains with hints of chocolate & ripe fruit

T: dark toasty malt, sweetness of rum and subtle bitter hops - very well balanced

M: smooth, full, and lively on the tongue

D: more of a meal than most stouts, and not one I could drink all evening

I was a little concerned that this is called a Jamaican style stout, since some can be quite sweet. This Otter Mon was a very pleasant surprise. I'll be back for more.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pint 6oz bottle into an Otter Creek glass. That came as part of a three pack gift set. The bottle itself has no freshness date or abv% on the label but it has a nice description of the beer.

Appearance: The body is solid black and completely opaque. It pours thick and slowly, raising a tall tan head. The head has good retention and hangs on long after the first sip making lots of cool lace patterns on the glass.

Small: It has deep rich chocolate notes with dark roasted malty sweetness.

Taste/Palate: There are lots of nice roasted malt notes up front and throughout. In it there are notes of dark roasted barley, dark/milk chocolate and even some coffee notes as well. It has only a mellow sweetness before some of the hop notes move in and they add there bitterness, dryness and leafy almost metallic flavor notes. The body has a solid feel with a smooth texture and mild carbonation.

Notes: Overall it's an enjoyable stout and it's very much in keeping with the style.

Look: Pours a dark black body with a thin tan foam head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving nice lacing.

Smell: Coffee and roasted malts primarily. Picked up a little chocolate notes.

Taste: Lot of coffee up front with a nice chocolate ending.

Mouth/Drink: Very smooth and easy to drink. Otter Creek is continuously putting out some fine brews.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Stone RIS glass. Pours black with a two finger tan head. The head clung to the sides of the glass where it left decent lacing.

The aroma has some of the coffee, chocolate and roasted flavors that I expected when I opened this but it is also pretty sweet. the sugar cane comes through in the nose and does add a little of the Rum like character they describe on the bottle.

The taste shows a little more of the roasted, chocolate and coffee bitterness then the nose did, but like the nose it is also somewhat sweet. The sugar cane comes through especially in the finish, but is pretty well balanced so it doesn't become too sweet.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Drinkability is decent, I enjoyed this one but it probably wouldn't be my one of my top choices for a stout though. I will say that the sugar cane was an interesting addition that I don't think I've had before and I'm glad I got to try it.

Received as an extra in a trade with Travduke...poured it into my Otter Creek World Tour pint glass that he ALSO included as an extra in our trade. Thanks Travis! As a side note - the label on this thing cracks me up...an otter with some scruff, a rasta hat and dreads, holding a pint glass on the beach...quality.

Poured a deep brown with purple edges. A good two fingers of very dense mocha foam perched on top of this one. The head dissipated fairly rapidly leaving a small cap on the top along with a thick splotchy lace.

The most notable presence is a very sweet chocolate with pleasant malts. Wow, it does smell extremely sweet...like caramel. Whew, not sure if I'm going to be able to handle it if the beer tastes as sugary as it smells.

The taste is not what I was expecting. It definitely starts with the sweet cocoa taste, but not quite as much as was implied by the smell. It is a very thin beer that just seems a bit too mild. The flavor, while pretty good, really needs to be cranked up a bit. There is not a strong hop finish...this one just fades away. There is some vanilla in there as well - again, very mild. The finish has an almost berry-like taste that pops me in the glands at the back of my mouth.

Very low carbonation and hoppiness. This is an easy beer to drink quickly. While I enjoyed this one, I was expecting a bit more punch.

Otter Creek- Otter Mon

A- Dark thin black with a huge frothy light tan head. Thick lacing and a good head retention.
S- Very milky creamy with light chocolate malts and cereal grains and a touch grassy.
T- Very milky creamy chocolate malt, chocolate is light but dominant throughout. Mild toasty grainy malts with a slight dry chalky malt and earthy hop ending.
M- very smooth and creamy. Creamy dry chocolate body and finish. Sweet malt in the throat.

Overall- Nice stout here. The mouthfeel makes this 1!

Poured from a 22-ounce bomber into a 3 oz. Sam Adams sampler.

A: A deep ruby brown, near black color with a bubbly cap of tan foam which left a little clingy lace.

S: Smells of carob, black licorice and espresso beans.

T: Slightly sweet and nutty at first before giving way to a nice roasted coffee flavored with bittersweet cocoa and earthy hop bitterness.

M: Mouthfeel is on the full side but still pretty smooth and bubbly.

D: Very full flavored stout in the wheelhouse for any coffee stout or export stout fan. Easy to down but probably wouldn;t session because of lingering flavors.

22oz bomber, no dating. New to my local beer store, so I'm assuming a fresh bottle.

Pours a dark brown/black with a thin wisp of brown head. Foam quickly dissipates leaving a rather unimpressive lacing, mostly of random air-bubbles.
Scents of dark, bitter cocoa and raw sugarcane add to the dry roasted malt character.
Flavor much more subtle than the nose. Somewhat tangy, somewhat burnt malt overall with the sweet cocoa striking first and disappearing into a cola-like element. Finishes with a dry, chalky yet simultaneously quenching bittersweet cocoa.
The body is more thin than one would initially expect but in this manner it well represents a Caribbean stout, which are full enough in body to deliver, but thin enough to quench one's thirst in a hot-weather environment.
And in that respect, it is quite drinkable and well done for the goal they set forth. Like the Dragon Stout it emulates, perfect alternative to a lager in warm weather.

Beige head that settles into a fine layer of bubbles. Leaves spotty lace. The liquid dark, dark brown where no light shines through.

Dark malt aromas with oak and brandy notes. Dark chocolate smell.

Rich flavor of black patent and chocolate malts. The finish is lasting tastes of burnt toast and modest hop. The body is as expected. I suspect the alcohol is elevated but it blends well with the strong flavors. Overall, an easy stout to drink.

from the word tour series (of which i was totally oblivious), a cool idea

dark in color. kinda stout-colored. head is not so great

aromas of molasses and a slightly rummy vanilla. deep roasting and herbal hops

i have a tough time discerning what makes this particularly jamaican. it's tasty and i get what's written on the bottle (english stout plus sugar cane from the colony. meh...tenuous), so, whatever. bigger vanilla-rum character, with a lovely deep coffeeish roast

not quite stout gravity, but sluggish enough to keep the flavors around appropriately. don't get me wrong...not exactly pilsnerish in feel

Appearance: Pours a darkish brown with some ruby highlights; the foamy beige head leaves copious lacing as it fades

Smell: You can clearly smell the cane sugar amidst the roasty chocolate and dark fruit flavors

Taste: Starts out with chocolate and dark fruit but by mid-palate, the cane sugar takes over and dominates through the finish, although the other flavors linger underneath

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: What smells good on the nose isn't always so on the tongue, as the cane sugar sweetness becomes cloying, particularly by mid-palate, overwhelming the early promise of the chocolate and roasty coffee flavors; the complexity is there, but the sweetness is just a bit too much
