Hadn't seen the Otter Summer before when I picked up a single at my beer store today. Not sure if Otter Creek changes the label each summer, or if the local VT label is different from their exports, but the label on my bottle has a wood-covered bridge on it instead of the sun pictured on the bottle by BeerAdvocate. Oh well.
Pours a pale straw color with a decent enough white foamy head. Fairly average looking beer; nothing special here besides a slightly sparkley foam. Hmmm... I actually dig this aroma quite a bit. Strong malt presence for a pale wheat ale with some faint apple/banana fruit notes as well. A cut-grass aroma off in the distance as well. It's good, but again, nothing special. The taste bears a tangy bitterness that I wasn't necessarily expecting. Kind of a tart alcoholish flavor. Some malty citrus flavors in there too, but everything is dulled by the acidic and metallic tang that permeates through the entire mouthfull. What a drag. The mouthfeel is sharp, but also slightly watery. This beer would make a pleasant summer brew if it were not for the strong tangy alcohol flavor that dominates it. I'm inclined to try this again on draft if I see, to see if it gets any better on tap. Let's hope so.

They must have re-formulated this beer. It is not as bad as the ratings say... Had on draft at the Thread City Hop Fest in Willimantic, CT. I would suggest giving it another shot!

07/23/13 At Rattle N Hum, NYC. On tap. Listed as a kolsch which is a style I really like, especially mid-summer. What I got had a bit more body than I was expecting & had a touch of a sour/bitterness that seemed more in the wheat class. Only problem there was it lacked either the dryness or citrus one would expect in that realm. So many brews & so little time meant I needed to move on. Perhaps another day.
