Sampling a cold 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The bottle has been in my fridge for many years and figured I would open it up tonight.
Beer pours a deep dark chocolate color with a creamy beige head of .5cm foaming up. This foam fades quickly to an edge layer.
The aroma of the beer is rich of coffee and hints of dark chocolate with some roasted malt too, but is still coffee dominant. No hint of hops nor ABV on the nose. Slightly surprised at how rich the coffee nose is on this one after how long its been in my fridge.
First sip reveals a medium bodied beer with gentle and spacious carbonation. Texture feels smooth and gently caresses my palate after each sip. Very easy drinking physical traits.
Flavor is roasted malt and coffee grounds with hints of sweet chocolate in the background. Pretty straightforward flavor profile, not really any hop character and booze is completely hidden. Beer does finish with a bit of a black coffee bitterness.
Solid porter with good coffee character. Not a lot of depth or complexity but would be worth a shot if it was still being made.

The appearance was a dark brown color with a concave film of lacing around the glass. The smell had sweet and roasty smooth coffee beans over top of delicate sweet cocoa powder. The taste was mainly sweet through the previously mentioned flavors and lead to a nice rich sweet aftertaste running into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light allowing a silky texture all about. Overall, what a wonderful coffee porter.

From the possibly expired bottle, it pours a dark brown with a short lasting head. The nose exhilarates on the scent of coffee, vanilla and a bit of malt. The mouth enjoys the coffee and vanilla flavor. Yum!

Almost black, ruby when you hold it up to the sun. Lovely caramel colored head, although it dissipated fairly soon.

Dark malts and vanilla. Very promising.

Taste - delicious. Coffee, chocolate nib, roasted barley/chocolate malt and all good things barley.

Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly carbonated as it should be.

Top notch. Organic is a nice bonus. Another beer that raises the bar and discourages me from trying to brew my own out of fear of failure.

A good beer with a pretentious label.

Look: Let me address the labeling first. It tells you everything you need to know, but looks like something from Starbucks. A little holier than thou. The beer itself isn't particularly pretty either, no head at all but totally black.

Smell: Dark roast coffee with some bitter chocolate notes.

Taste: Quite strong coffee, again with hints of bittersweet chocolate. Very tasty.

Feel: Full bodied, smooth but not creamy.

Overall: After getting over the packaging and lackluster appearance, this is a solid coffee porter I may return to.

This is an enjoyable take on a coffee porter. The coffee aroma is robust and overpowers the flavor of the porter a bi. Dark as a strong java with a caramel ribbon. Wolaver used good beans to make this brew. A solid porter for winter.

Incredibly strong coffee aroma and flavor that manages to maintain its intensity with each successive sip, though the flavor is admittedly more coffee than porter.

Alta Gracia Porter has been one of my favorite beers for quite some time now. Perfect to drink outdoors or around a fire on a cold fall/winter night, it disappoints me to have to speak about it in past tense.

Pours the darkest of browns with a decent espresso-colored head while tasting like the dream balance of malts and coffee beans. One of the cleanest, most "authentic" tasting coffee beers (regardless of style) that I've ever had. This beer had the look, smell and mouthfeel of the quintessential porter.

Also am very upset to hear about the discontinuation of the brewery and this Porter. Seems like when I find a good porter it shuts down like Catamount so many years ago. I tend to like porters more than Stouts, though stouts have dramatically changed over the past 10-15 years. Anyway, really like the balance of the coffee and vanilla flavors. If you have a chance to get it at your store before they're gone, I'd recommend it.

Like many others, I bought this for the first time after hearing of Wolaver's shut down. Pours like motor oil out of the bottle, although more transparent than I expected. A puffy white head transmits instant coffee notes with hints of sugary sweetness. You really taste the vanilla bean on the palate, which compliments the roasted malt very well, but it tastes a little saccharin and artificial at times. Overall, this is a very good porter. Too bad.

I bought this after hearing it was retired/discontined.

This also the second ported i tried tonight that was better in the bottle/can rather than in a glass. I am now convinced porters are best not in a glass.

Anyways, so this porter is a borderline milk stout to me.
Full and silky. Good malt character with a noticeable coffee vibe. Its a shame this will no longer be brewed. This is a great sessionable porter.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Fleeting light espresso head, manages only about half a finger on the pour even with some cascading bubbles when being filled. Settles to a nearly no existent puck, slightly oily top and fine to good sized bubbled collar. Body color on the porter angle is dark walnut brown, quite opaque maybe even a bit hazy towards the top strangely, and a deep Indian red edge.

Well, morning coffee has arrived here on the nose. Excellent ripped bean coffee nose which is the dominant smell off the beer. Roast angle does get into the malt side but the coffee does lead forward, with an oily sensing smell as well, and quite fresh too. Slighty notes of cream as well, but for the most part it's one dimensional but a very good coffee bouquet.

Palate goes for the basics. Light bodied simple porter mouthfeel but a touch of wetness as well, losing a bit of that creamy anticipating flavor hinted on the nose. Mid palate has a bit of coffee flavor but also a hint of sour bean just a bit which is interesting as it doesn't come off like acrid roast grain which is nice. A bit of mild hop bitterness seems to perkalate (no pun intended) out on the finish, which also gets oily as well matching a bit of the beers mid palate oily character. The oil word just keeps coming up all the time here interestingly. The coffee flavor is of very good quality, fresh and feeling like just roasted.

Looks like the went for better coffee quality, but sort of got the porter basics a little bit neutered and buried. I would prefer a better show, but this is a very good take on a coffee forward brew. This has the potential to be better, but it's nothing disappointing in the slightest.

Pours dark brown witha tan creamy head that clings and leaves lace. Nose is coffee, light brown sugar, dark fruit, nuts and caramel. Light pepper from hops. Taste is mellow as some bold coffee without bitterness comes across the palate smooth and with the nutty taste of caramel. Low diacetyl presence. Soft creamy mouthfeel shows you roasty malt and a dryish finish. Light cream to lingerwith firm caramel as hops balance the beer perfectly with a moderate bitterness.

A great creamy, coffee porter...

Not for the high ABV guys, but definitely has some body and flavor...

Nice thick creamy head on tap, bursting with robust coffee, cane sugar and a background of subtle vanilla/dark chocolate sweetness... Not too sweet. not too boozy....

Yummy for a coffee buzz, a dessert fix, or just a nice fall/winter sessionable porter....and organic!

Pours a nice, deep mahogany color and looks fairly black in the glass with a thin, lightly tanned head. Smell is mostly rich and roasty gourmet coffee bean, milk chocolate, hint of the vanilla, and some lactose creaminess. Taste follows pretty well. Nicely carbonated and creamy medium mouthfeel. The coffee is on the forefront with lots of roastiness, chocolate, and vanilla sweetness; I get almost like an oatmeal or lactose flavor, something that makes it more mellow and smooth. I was impressed with this one. Very enjoyable and easy drinking.

LOOK: Rich brown with some red hues. About a finger's worth of light tan head when poured into a shaker glass.

NOSE: Coffee. Just coffee.

TASTE: I'm just getting coffee. That's the one and only note here. It doesn't complement any other flavors, it's just the only thing there.

FEEL: A much lighter body than I'd expect for something billed as a porter. Maybe it'd work if billed as a brown?

A: [4.00] The beer looks black - but is a really deep ruby red when held up to the light. The pour forms a 1/2 finger khaki head. The head dissipates quickly leaving some tan traces on the surface. The beer has a born on date of 11/03/14. The bottle lists a lot of organic ingredients and the origins on the coffee beans - but not the ABV. C'mon guys it is like 4 characters of text x.x%

S: [4.50] Boom! It is a coffee bomb. In your face with the coffee. I can't get any other notes on the nose. I am not complaining - just observing.

T: [4.25] The taste follows the nose. Big burst of coffee up front. However, it then slides into a malty sweet flavor - without the coffee. The coffee makes a subtle return on the aftertaste.

M: [3.50] The body is a bit thin and watery. It is a lower ABV beer and I think that shows most here.

O: [4.00] I really like a coffee forward stout. This fits into that category. They were not shy with the coffee flavor. The main gripe is the watery mouthfeel. It is hard to avoid on a low ABV porter. Overall I really like this. I would like to have it again.

Bottle says 102714. Pours a very dark ruby red (almost but not quite black - hold it up to a strong light) with a one-finger tan head. Not much lacing to speak of.

This is one smooth porter. Maybe it's the vanilla, but there is no roughness to this at all. The predominant impression is, of course, roasted malts and coffee - but there's a definite sweet undertone and just a hint of chocolate. Moderate carbonation. Full-bodied and almost oily mouthfeel.

Really enjoyable.

this beer closely reminds me of surly's cacao bender only it comes in a 6 pack! if you're not ready for the vanilla I can see why some people might not love it, but I think it is restrained enough to still be very good. overall the base beer is good too. it's a little too sweet to be perfect in my book, but still very good. I will buy it again.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Bottleneck says 102714.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch dark tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a small center patch of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind

S- Bold coffee aroma that's slightly sweet and has some light vanilla, chocolate and caramel notes. Medium roastiness.

T- A little sweeter than the aroma lets on with the coffee being more complementary to the overall flavor rather than being the driving force. The malt roastiness is also pretty middle-of-the-road providing a good backdrop for the coffee to play off.

M- Standard porter feel with medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- An above average coffee porter that I'm glad I purchased a full sixer of since it satisfies my coffee beer cravings without breaking my wallet. Recommended.

Nice, deep chocolate brown color keeping out the light !!. Aroma is of chocolate and a back of coffee(thought it would be the other way around !!). Head is minimal and lacing is ok ! Taste is nice of roasted coffee infused with a bit of fine bittersweet chocolate. The feel is thick and chewy and this beer lingers around for quite awhile, Nice !!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure I've a some stuff from this brewery before and they were competent. This too.

It's brown with a little fizz and hardly any lacing. The aroma is good but not strong - coffee and roasted malts. Nice.

The taste similarly is a nice balance roasty coffee but a little weak on the Porter malts. The finish is sweet and clean.

This a quality product and reasonably priced.
