On our way from NYC to Burlington, VT, and after hopping on the quaint Ticonderoga ferry, the wife and I stumbled upon Middlebury, home of Otter Creek.

The Otter is outside of town, a cool-looking and compact brewery with shiny tanks. Step inside and you'll see a small gift shop and a rather spacious pub with lots of tables and a wrap-around bar.

I like the atmosphere. You can really feel you are in a brewery and not in some cleaned-up chain brewpub. Lots of classic locals with their sandals and hippie-rural looks, convivial ambience.

Service is friendly and prompt both at the bar and at the tables, and the food menu is heavy (and I mean HEAVY) in local ingredients. Welcome to the Republic of Vermont! We got the cheese-and-meat plate, a steal at $4.99 and full of all-local goodies (apples and walnuts too). Not much else to choose from, though, a couple of sandwiches and two soups.

13 beers on tap, of which 7 are from Otter Creek (including a brewpub-only "Test Batch"), 4 are Wolaver's and 2 are Shed's, that little brewpub and restaurant in Stowe that closed and was bought by Otter Creek.

Problem is, none of these 13 beers is really great. They are drinkable enough but not super satisfying. I had the Anniversary Ale and liked it better than in a bottle, and the wife and I both thought the Black IPA was rather average. The Shed IPA was outright boring. Sorry... that is why I'm rating quality and selection a little low. I wish they had their Otter Creek Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA or some sort of pub-only brews to spice things up. Reasonable beer prices, at $4.50-$5 per pint.

But still, you'll have a good time here trying brews, local cheeses, getting a growler to go, chatting up the friendly bartenders and looking at the map where visitors from all over the world leave their mark. Literally from ALL over! A very cool thing to have.

The best beer in the great state of Vermont and that is saying something. Sit on the patio and enjoy the scenery or head inside for amazing pub food (vegetarian/vegan available) and tons of bottles, cans, and swag to take home. The beers rotate occasionally and sampler flights are offered for each of their brands (Otter Creek and Shed Brewing). The Couch Surfer on Nitro will blow you away (if available).

The revamped taproom is attractive with lots of seats and much improved food. (Trust me, the food was awful before.) The beer selection is standard OC fare which is found everywhere, but it's clean and tasty from the source. Often there's a pilot brew on tap and sometimes it's for sale in cans. The merch here is great and I think could be expanded even further, considering the strength of their design branding. Service is friendly and excellent- it's easy to leave here happy.

Worth the trip to Middlebury! Wasn't expecting too much but was pleasantly surprised. A nice shop, a great bar area with really good small bites for lunch/dinner. Good selection on tap and best of all the staff was phenomenal. We dealt with three different staff members and all were some of the best we've had in any brewery visit. The acoustics are a bit overwhelming and it tends to get loud quit quickly. Other than that, top notch place.

In a small town off the beaten path of Burlington. Has a modest taproom/pub that is fun and simple looking into the brewery through windows. Food is snack to light lunch or dinner and very tasty. Staff are attentive and very helpful. Glad I stopped in on my way through.

The sandwich I had was amazing, thanks in large part to the Jamtastic Jam they used. I decided to go with Shed IPA instead of Otter Creek, as I had never had Shed prior to that. It was definitely worth the stop on the way home from skiing.
