Notes: Coffee lovers, this one’s for you, straight from the mind of our R&D Brewer. We reached out to our local coffee-roasting friends at Ferris Coffee & Nut for the featured ingredient: copious amounts of Mackinac Fudge coffee. Roasted, bold and perfectly balanced with just a hint of sweetness, it fits right into our esteemed line of coffee beers.

Smells like fudge, tastes like rich flourless chocolate cake with hints of coffee. This is a dessert beer balanced with enough bitterness to not be cloying. Super tasty, one of the better stouts I’ve had! Sweet but super balanced too.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of mocha head that leaves decent lacing.

The smell is decadent with fudge, dark chocolate, and coffee.

The taste equals the smell in greatness. I taste cocoa, dark chocolate, some coffee in the finish, and of course fudge.

Full bodied with a smooth, slick mouthfeel

This is a great dessert beer. I'm having it for lunch though.

12oz bottle purchased at Detroit taproom. Bottled 9/17/18.

Pour: rich dark brown, almost black. Two finger tan head. Dissipates to a layer of clouds and a heavy ring. Slight bubble lacing. Really nice looking.

Nose: coffee, fudge and some more fudge. It’s definitely a coffee beer but surpringly robust chocolate nose. Smells great.

Taste: dark roast coffee upfront. Chocolate fudge right there with the coffee although not as robust as in the nose. Some malt sweetness on the backend. Maybe a hint of dark fruits. Lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium to light carbonation feel, despite the great head, about as you would expect for a stout. Thinner than I would have guessed from the nose but consistent with less fudge taste. Doesn’t stay on the tongue long.

Overall: I like this but won’t likely make a trip for more. Will age a bottle for fun. The look and nose are awesome. The taste and mouthfeel ok. I love coffee, and fudge, but somehow I’m not that into this. Would go with breakfast stout before this. Worth a try but I’d get a bottle or two before committing to more. That said, fairly reasonably priced ($7 something for four bottles, inclu deposit).

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/18/2018. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, marshmallow, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, marshmallow, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/grassy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, nutty medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, marshmallow, toasted dark/brown bread, light fruit/smoke/char, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and no acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky./bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is a fantastic flavored American stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. This tastes like sweet stout, but finishes like an American stout. Very rich malts and balanced fruity/nutty fudge flavored coffee complexity; with solid earthy hop balance against sweetness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.

Greatly enjoyed this offering on tap at Founders. Nice, deep, almost black color with mild head and nice moderate lingering lacing. Smells just like Mackinac fudge chocolate and coffee. Tastes even better - fudge, coffee, vanilla, some hints of bourbon. Not too sweet, perfect balance. Some nice mild carbonation and pleasant mouthfeel that’s not too thick or heavy. Nice coffee bitterness in the aftertaste that is perfect in intensity and reminds me of a nice cup of joe. Amazing coffee-infused beer, one of my favorites.

From notes on 3/25/14

Another great beer you can only get at the Founders Brew Pub. Very dark body. Intense flavor of coffee. The only time I've had a beer with this much coffee flavor, the keg had a hop rocket loaded with coffee on it. Some chocolate flavors come through. Great beer.

12 ounce bottle, dated 9/18/18. Pours
black with creamy off white head. Curtains of lace on the glass. Lovely appearance.
The nose is a sweet cocoa, coconut, coffee, powdered milk.
The taste matches the nose. Malted milk, coffee, coconut, fudge and sweetened condensed milk.
Smooth and creamy in my mouth, finishes dry and chalky.
I’ve previously only had a taste of Mrs Strohme2’s pour. I’ve been missing out. This is great.

Sitting in Founders so why not right a review.

Everything about this except mouthfeel and lingering vanilla/sweet chocolate is Breakfast Stout. This one lingers on with an almost syrupy mouthfeel (in a good way), opposite of BF Stout. It's a good beer. But glad it was only a 3$ pour.
