As masters of oak, rye and hops, why wouldn't the expectations in this beer be anything short of spectacular? Founders brewers insist upon a malt balance that takes a slim backseat to the obvious attention-getting flavors that its namesake commands.
Its slighty hazed, winter honey amber casts a creamy froth upward to nearly topple the glass. Settling with spiderwebbing lace, an effortless but powerful aromatic blend ensues. Citrus pith and orange peels abound while a backdrop of deep caramel (almost toffee) and soft oak all project to the nose while its taste leads with creamy malt sweetness and dry toast.
Caramel, toffee, and light maple turn to a pecan, cashew and chestnut flavor as sweetness turns earthy and buttercream. Once the malt saturates the mouth, its hoppy rebuttal takes charge. Its depths of flavor starts with perfumy pink grapefruit, freshly zested oranges and a tangy spiciness that only rye grain can provide.
Its spicy texture perfectly opposes its sweeter medium-bodied components. But as the sweetness and creaminess trails in finish, its hop bitterness and rye spiciness grows to frame the taste of pine resins, fresh-cut grass, peppercorn and a uncharacteristic husky grit.
