Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A Founders take on a classic style, brewed with a generous amount of flaked oats, chocolate malt, roasted barley and a healthy helping of Nugget hops, Founders Oatmeal Stout is nitrogen-infused to give it an extra smooth and creamy mouthfeel. An attractive cascade effect gives this beer its forthright visual appeal—and the body and clean flavor deliver on that initial promise.

Dark opaque black body, full tan head, copious lacing. Smell is brisk malt notes of roasted grains, slight acidity. Taste is toast and dark chocolate. Feel is silky and lush, with a quick drop off. Exactly what I'd expected. Right on target.

This is what I've been waiting for all my life. This is probably my first 5 star beer. So worth it! Get the nitro if you can!

Taste: creamy smooth from oats, only slightly sweet, Chocolate malts, slick mouth-feel and dry finish. Mild malt and cocoa nose. Blackish brown, opaque, nice soft nitro foam head with refined lattice on glass. Medium to Med/lite body. Smoother than Guinness. 38 IBUs

On tap @ Prefunk, Boise ID. Served in a nonic - great to have Founders in Boise, and this is one I've been wanting to try.

Cascading carbonation rolls upward on this gorgeous nitro brew, the head is light tan and retains well, body is nearly opaque brown, very inviting. Muted nose and flavors though, suggestions of chocolate and roast, but fairly light in both categories, and the oatmeal character is not prominent either. There is a little fruity sweetness, and the body is lighter than I expected (though this is a 4.5% beer, so...). Overall I had higher expectations for this given the brewery and the high scores, but it is what it is and its nice having an oatmeal stout option under 5% abv.

Poured a jet-black color with light brown bubbles quickly rising to the top. It smelled of chocolate and oats. Tasted of chocolate, toffee and burnt toast maltiness. Creamy and smooth.

Look: served in a tulip glass. Had a 3/4 inch brown head with no carbonation. Dusty black
Smell: Strong odor of bourbon, molasses, sweet french vanilla, espresso, and toffee. Exceptional!
Taste: Notes of vanilla, dark chocolate with noticeable dry hop character. The malt character is toasted and light. Overall the taste is sweet and salty.
Mouthfeel: Thick like sweet cream or half n' half. The mouth-coating aftertaste is dry and refreshing. Overall, the mouthfeel could be a little smoother.
Overall: Amazingly pungent beer with an appealing taste profile and a slightly underwhelming mouthfeel.
