Very Good
Big LushiousBig Lushious
Notes: Big Lushious is a deep, rich stout that’s packed with flavor: roasted malts, all-natural dark chocolate, a subtle suggestion of burnt coffee grounds and a kiss of tart raspberries. At 7.8% ABV, it’s big, sumptuous and extravagant, but also balanced

I don't typically take the time to write reviews of beers online (I do that enough when judging competitions) but after having read the reviews here of this beer I really felt like I had to provide a counter-point to all of the glowing entries. After all, this is a $17 beer (at least in my market) and BA reviews do have a way of influencing people's purchasing decisions.

I do not have the beer in front of me now-I had it last week-so I'm not going to provide detailed tasting notes. I'm simply going to offer up that, in my opinion, this is probably the worst beer I've tasted all year (commercial that is-I've tasted some terribly flawed homebrew in that time).

It's shortcomings boil down to two major points: First, the raspberry flavor is extremely overdone, tastes artificial, and lingers unpleasantly. The chocolate is a bit too over-the-top as well but is tolerable.
Second, and this is what really kills it, the beer is UNDRINKABLY SWEET. I fully expected this to be a sweet dessert beer and I like some sweet styles from time to time...but to say that this beer is cloying would be a gross understatement. This is, without a doubt, the sweetest beer I've ever tasted...and I've tasted a LOT of beer, both homebrew as well as around 98% of the beers distributed to the NY market (plus a LOT of out-of-market beers that I trade for or pick up when traveling).
The insane sweetness coupled with the unpleasant artificial raspberry finish to make this brew thoroughly unpalatable.

It is extraordinarily rare for me to dump a beer, especially a $17 beer, but that is precisely what happened with Big Lushious. Being surrounded by beer-drinkers, I tried to give it away but, after folks sampled it, I had no takers so down the drain it went.
I will say that the others who tried it didn't find it quite as objectionable as I did...but none of them wanted to drink it either.

just my $0.02

Striking the perfect balance of chocolate and raspberry, Founder's new "Backstage" series beer is every bit the luscious stout that it claims to be. Roasted sweetness sets the tone while the fruit carries an underbelly that won't be denied.

With its firmly frothy pour, its dark brown body unleashes a sultry smoky chocolate aroma that's laced with raspberry in its most perfumy form. Yet once those flavors hit the tongue, its true passions are realized.

Deep with bittersweet morsels, dark-roast coffee and a the crafty hand of chocolatiers, the flavors billow with succulence. It's lavish taste and texture becomes awash with tangy fruit balance and acidic complexity as the raspberries come out to play. Their medley is strong and perfectly balanced as the chocolate wraps around the raspberry to soothe the palate with dessert-like decadence but also with striking drinkability.

Its finish eases gradually, simmering with toasted grain and coffee-like bitterness. All that is easy to overlook because of the beer's fruity linger that seems slightly wine-like in its acidity. The taste is a beautiful complement to any rich dish like those served up for Thanksgiving dinner.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Deep and thick black walnut out of the bottle, totally opaque as night body color. Head fills with a small creamy boom, curling to a simple finger with a bit of staying power. One finger solid dark mocha brown color, very bubbly top and bubbled swiss cheese collar to match with it. Dark, thick, lucious looking wink wink.

Fantastic nose. Great solid amounts of red raspberry fruit. Wonderful sense of bitter Belgian dark chocolate. Hints of fresh cocoa powder. Mild char and light roast character. Excellent balance with fruit first and the chocolate darkness coming later. Just wonderful.

Palate hits with huge fruit raspberry explosion. Creamed notes of fruit juice, and a nice almost mellow tartness, and a good amount of controlled sweetness to match. Silky palate with a thick coating. Lots of fruit forward action and a finishing mild keirsch brandy warmth on the swallow. Black forest chocolate cake quality, piping with mild warmth and chocolate darkness that grows with each sip.

Overall just a great winner. Reminds a bit of Cherry Rye from Goose Island but a bit simpler. Stupid easy drinking, not too varied or complicated, but true to name, and hits everything real nicely.

Tastes just like a Russel Stover's Chocolate Raspberry whip cream egg.

Raspberry! Such lush juicy raspberry. Even stout haters could enjoy this stout.

Thebeertruck said it best, this is full of real juicy raspberry flavor. Very much a dessert beer, super tasty, a little tart, sweet and chocolatey, and super smooth. Grab this while it's around. Especially if you like chocolate covered raspberries, because this is that in a bottle.

A: oily black with dark brown creamy foam head, slick sheen spattered with motes of lace left behind...

S: dark chocolaty malt aromas with a sweet and sour berry undercurrent

T: as anticipated, rich dark malts bring flavors of bittersweet chocolate and chocolate syrup to mind; the berry is best appreciated as the beer warms - initial prick of sour astringency was startling, but the tart, dark berry flavors developed nicely over the course of the drink

M: slim, with some tingle; tartness on the finish; medium-weight, mild carbonation

O: it is what you'd expect for the most part, delivering on the chocolate and berry flavors, much like Raspberry Truffle Abduction or The Backyard and Bramble Rye BCBS variants. It is lighter and at 8.7 abv milder that any of the aforementioned. Good drinking.

This tastes like a jelly ring. Liquid raspberry and chocolate but no char. It was almost too sweet. Was surprised this is an imperial stout though. The body was disappointingly light with good carbonation. Alcohol was hidden.

Much better than many reviews suggest. Maybe a couple of months of waiting helped. Smooth with chocolate and toasty malt notes. Finishes with raspberries but not to sweet or tart then the chocolate notes linger on the palate.

partly my fault, I didn't see the raspberry note in the description before I ordered. But it basically tasted like a breakfast stout that someone dumped cough syrup into. had all the good parts of a founders stout, but that was plowed over by an aftertaste that spoiled it with saccharin tasting fruit.

Not bad for a raspberry stout, but none of the flavors really stood out to me. Everything just seemed a little muted and kind of boring. Not worth the big sticker price.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a black color and a thick consistency. There was a massive, tan-colored, foamy, long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A strong aroma of malt, chocolate, and raspberries. Very rich-smelling.

T: Tasted of dark chocolate, a hint of coffee, roasted malt, and the advertised raspberries. Not surprisingly, the raspberries are center stage. They don't dominate the flavor, but certainly make their presence known. Not as powerful a flavor as I expected, but still very complex and tasty.

M: A fair amount of carbonation with a silky finish. Medium-bodied.

O: How much you like this beer will probably depend on your love of raspberries. Since I like them, it's no problem with me. They fit in nicely in the stout style and enhance a very well made beer.

I am a big fan of Founders and I was excited to find this over the holidays, but I was very disappointed...way too sweet and tastes like "cough syrup", could not finish!
