I have been a hop-head for nearly 12 years now and this is my favorite hoppy beer after having sampled 500 plus. My only beef is that Founder's pulled this as a full-time offering in a 6-pack and brought it back as a seasonal beer in a 4-pack for the same price. But I must admit, it is still worth it.

A: crystal clear; deep reddish amber in color; 1 finger off white head that receded to a thick collar; nice lacing;

S: grapefruit, floral, a little rye spiciness;

T: malty up front, hoppy at the end; starts with caramel, followed by a bit of rye spiciness; grapefruit becomes more prevalent at mid-palate and stays through the finish; mild bitterness at the finish that builds through the aftertaste;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: very nice; the rye spice is a nice lead-in to the hop bitterness;

Enjoyed on tap. Pours a lovely, hazy deep red with a creamy white head.
The aroma is loaded with tropical fruits and a hint of spice and a touch of candied fruit.
Hops up front with grapefruit and orange, a little pineapple sweetness and some spicy rye mid taste. A long, lingering and chewy, slightly resinous finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and rether smooth.
Really good stuff.

Had it on tap at Norse Bar. A dark copper color, aroma of sweet malts and slightly citrusy hops. Taste is similar, though there's a stronger sweetness, especially in the finish. Texture is amazing, thick and creamy. I am sorry that this is no longer available in bottles. It's great to find it on tap but I wish this were a year-round beer in bottles.

Went to Founders over the weekend had it on tap there, a shame this isn't bottled anymore due to a short shelf life. This is a world class brew, easily the best rye beer I've had.

Just not a fan of IPA, being a Rye beer and a bit different was hoping this would be the one to win me over but simply did not. Red's Rye is definitely a bit sweeter than a normal IPA but just didn't do it for me. If you already like IPA you will most certainly love this beer seeing as even I found it tolerable but if you are like me and have not found an IPA you have liked maybe skip this one. I was able to pick this up as a single so don't feel too bad for trying it out.

Had on tap at the Nightingale.
A: Brilliant red tinted amber with a 1” off-white foam collar that clings to the side to the glass.
S: Smells like half a Texas ruby red grapefruit sitting next to a slice of light rye toast.
T: An assertive grapefruit rind bitterness balances big caramel malt flavors.
F: Creamy, silky, medium for medium full body, medium carbonation.
O: A well balanced, assertively bitter, rye IPA.

Invested in a full 1/2 barrel for my home tap. Love this stuff. Great balance of bitter, body and unique flavor of rye. Nice maroon color and head that creates a nice lacing. Avoid if you don't like rye. But if that is good for you, it is a great alternative to super hoppy west coast ipas.

At a Brass Tap near Tampa, FL. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a transluscent pale reddish-copper. Smells of grapefruit zest and piney hops. Tastes like a grapefruit IPA with a malty rye backbone. Well balanced, clean bitterness at the end. Very drinkable, not too sweet, something that could be my new go-to. Will need more for further testing. 4.45/5

12oz bottle poured into tulip. Murky reddish copper body with a one inch khaki head that settles to a cap and ring. Patchy lacing throughout the drink. Aroma is grapefruit, herbal hop, rye spice, and caramel malt. Taste is light malty sweetness all the way through, piney and floral bitterness, spicy rye bite, and some citrus fruit. Medium body, creamy texture, moderate carbonation, and a bitter spicy finish.

Definitely one of my Top 10 favorite craft brews. This beer displays the finer qualities of the amarillo hop, like no other. The nutty, slightly spicy rye backbone supports a strong body, to the dry-hopping bitterness offered from the amarillo.

I tried to simulate this beer in my latest home brew attempt, and came pretty darn close! Recommend to those of you who use home brew kits the Brewer's Best brand from Kent, OH; Rye Pale Ale kit, and then substitute the Citra hops with Amarillo. Added extra white refined sugar to increase the ABV to >6%. Bazinga!

A - Pours a very deep and dark burnt amber and ruby, forms a finger and a half of lightly tan head.
S - Hops, grapefruit and a malty breadyness due in part to the rye addition within this brew.
T - Bitter hops and bready malts. Rye is pushing it, you'd have to really hunt for it. Drinks more like a hop dominant, bitter red ale.
O - A very good IPA, not great, but very good.
V - Bought as a single, unsure of value.

Look - fairly dark brown color and very cloudy. Great head and good lacing.
Smell - strong spiced hop smell
Taste - weird to say but it taste like it looks. Sweet bitter spiced hop taste with a good amount of citrus in there. Has a good carmel malt backbone to give it the sweetness.
Feel - creamy with a medium body and medium high carbonation
Overall - great strong red eye ipa. Great mixtures of the 3. A lot to taste here.

on tap at bagger dave's just outside of grand rapids, MI. paired with their blue cheese burger

a: clear ruby-copper with some kind of bone-coloured head

s: citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit) with slight spicy rye characteristics

t: orange, grapefruit, and pine up front. a strong-but-not-harsh drying bitterness kicks in mid-palate, along with the rye flavours

m: medium mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, oily and sticky

o: the bitterness isn't for beginners, but get past that and you have a mouth-coating, delicious, and flavourful rye IPA

Caramel and spicy, peppery rye malts. Moderately hoppy with pine and grapefruit flavors. Well balanced and easy drinking. I think this bottle was fresher than the ones I had in the past.

From a bottle into a pilsner glass.

A: dark orange in color with thick light colored head and tons of lace.

S: I get a big nose full of citrus and pine.

T: follows the smell. Lots of bitter pineyness and what I would call lemon zest for taste.

M: perfect this beer is easy drinking but coats the mouth with heavy flavor and bitterness. Idea for a hoppy beer lover.

O: This is a great beer. Not my favorite from founders but one that's worth picking up if you haven't had the pleasure.

No label information. Red's Rye P.A. is brewed in the style of an American Pale Ale brewed with Rye. Originally a year round release, Red's Rye has since been relegated to fall seasonal 12 oz. 4 packs with year-round availability on draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a caramel-white head of a foamy frothed consistency over a moderately hazy red amber body. Thin specked sediment generates mild cloudiness, carbonation is moderate. Retention is above average, lacing is medium and stringy. 4

(Smell) Most trained noses can easily identify the bready, spicy characteristics of rye up and front, with a mellow sweetness and subtle graininess. Other aromatic notes include a light herbal hop profile with a subtle bitterness and a mellow fruitiness. 4

(Taste) Lightly toasted grainy caramel and peppery, spicy rye collectively form a flavorful malt body, fairly clean despite its assertiveness. Hop notes are herbal, peppery, slightly citrusy, although fainter by comparison, with a moderate bitterness, although the graininess of the malt bill seems to generate the most balance to the subtle sweetness of the brew. Subliminal undertones include lightly roasted coffee beans and herbal tea. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, mildly dry, peppery with a mellow graininess. Carbonation is soft, forming a smooth, lightly frothy mouthfeel. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Alcohol presence is moderate, off characters of mild graininess may impede drinkability, but often come with the territory of rye and caramel malt. 3.75

(Overall) An enjoyable beer by Founders. They manage to pack a lot of malt flavor into this bottle. The Rye makes for a thicker, spicier and more peppery body than Pale Ales without it, so this is a worthy try for anybody who wants a Pale Ale with a bit more malt character. I recommend enjoying it as fresh as possible as the hop flavors do not take long to drop off. 4

Damn, this is just a good beer. It's not the most complex but it's expertly crafted.

Ruby colored with a tall white head. Great retention, tons of lacing, looks fantastic.

Aroma is straight up grapefruit and pine, and lots if it.

Flavor keeps the grapefruit and pine but adds in a whole bunch of spice from the rye. Awesome combo.

Medium bodied and oh-so-easy to drink. Would pair great with some spicy food but big enough to standout on its own. Highly recommended.

Pours a thick reddish mahogany with solid tan head. Hops, pepper notes from the rye, and sweet malts on the nose. Taste is bittering hops up front and on the sides mingling with the rye giving it that zing of white pepper and an even body. Malt sweetness on the back makes it nicely rounded with bittering hops coming through on the aftertaste. Many love this brew, I personally love rye brews, yet the hops are a bit strong to my liking. Hop heads dream.

The body appears a deep reddish-brown, topped with a very thick, creamy, and sticky white head. Rich rye spiciness floating in the aroma; cola-like; caramel sweetness to the smell. Big, rye bread flavor; cookie dough sweetness; well-tempered hop bitterness throughout the taste experience. Heavy body; big sugary feel without being cloying.

This is an amazingly heady malt bomb, packed with rye spiciness, superb malt sweetness, and well-tempered hop bitterness and bite. From the incredible sticky, brittle sheets of lacing on the glass to the evil malt sweetness and sugary feel spiked with a delicious rye pep in the flavor and the nearly decadent pleasure of the heavy, rich mouthfeel, this is one winner of a beer. An exceptional find and even better drinking experience.

Nice frothy head with great retention and sip analyzing lacing. Aroma of straight up marshmallow. Taste started incredibly strong with the caramel marshmallow overpowering everything, as I went along some hop/malt presence became more apparent but the caramel remained throughout. This beer has an incredible rich feel that is only enhanced by the caramel taste. Very interesting.

Pours a nice reddish amber with decent head. Despite it's light color, this thing pours nice and thick! Very surprised with the hefty body. Smells clean and piney typical of an IPA. Taste is wonderful. Nice clean and refreshing but not thin. Has wonderful mouthfeel and nice and creamy with no bitterness. A great fantastic beer.
