Had this many times and finally decided to review this.

A: Looks really solid for a Rye IPA. Deep amber color with a perky white head.

S: Booyah!! A blast of Rye, hops, citrus, and grapefruit. Mmmm

T: Probably the best rye IPA I have had. This one is hoppy beer with a nice rye spice and a decent malt backing. It has just enough malt to counter the massive hops on this one. The rye really stands out that no other rye beer I have had compares to.

M: Very carbonated with a medium mouthfeel. Bitter and a tad dry.

I will seek this time and again!

Poured into a pint glass a thorough reddish amber color depending on the angle I hold it to the light. Not much head to speak of and what was there quickly dissipated without much trace.

Smells a tad hoppy and just a little malty with a touch of some other flavors I'm not totally qualified to describe.

Tastes fanatasic, everything I hoped for and more. Perfect balance of malt, hop and bitterness. No tacked on gimmicky flavor to finish it off. Just disappears down your throat leaving the sides of your tongue just a little bitter and begging for another sip of this exceptionally balanced beer. Not too watery and just crisp enough.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass.

A: Reddish brown, a bit darker than I expected, with some haze and a bit of visible carbonation. A flat brown head forms, but regresses fairly quickly.

S: Dark and bready, with pine & citrus hops, dark sweet malt.

T: Nice citrus/orange hops, sweet bread, toffee.

M: Nice medium to a bit heavy mouthfeel, good carbonation. Minimal alcohol presence. Finishes with a citrus pith hang.

O: This is different & tasty! Another good beer from Founders. Glad I have one more!

Poured from a newly tapped keg. The beer poured well with a nice firm head. Overall color was reddish-brown and nice clear viscous, semi-translucent appearance. Easy roll and good mouth feel. Balanced hop taste and a bit of very light sweetness as the beer temperature rose during drinking. Very smooth and balanced taste. Initial heavy hop feel from first sip, faded and became more balanced with subsequent tasting. The smell was average, non-floral and simple. However, the taste offset the nose and delivered a solid IPA taste without an after-taste. A solid beer!

A: deep amber/amber brown beer didn't produce a head for me (?), but swirling the glass produces a beige finely bubbled foam

S: floral, herbal, woody; citrusy

T: hardy malt and bold hop flavors; some citrus, pine, and musk; rye in the background; rustic

M: bitter, rather full-bodied and chewy

O: another great beer from Founders (no surprise there) - satisfying, gratifying, hearty - truly a rye IPA.

A 3oz pour at Atomic Coffee, Moorhead, MN (July 27, 2012). From notes.

Pours a clear amber. Nose is spicy with grapefruit hop on nose. Earthy dankness in body along with some citrus with a slickness and a light spicy finish. Some lift sweetness from malt balancing the bitterness well. Well put together beer. More rye character as the beer warmed.

Appearance: It has a nice deep amber/copper color to it. It has a nice thick off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of citrus, grapefruit, sweet caramelly malts and spicy rye.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some nice citrus and grapefruit from the hops and some sweet caramelly malts and spicy rye to balance it out. Very nice!

Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas. This is my kind of beer!

12 oz brown Founders stubby like bottle with awesome label of some mad scientist looking man who is just down right out of control. Very beautiful look. Poured into a standard pint glass.

A - dark amber with some ruby red and burnt orangish highlights. Decent frothy head that is an almost dirty white to tan in color. Does have a bit of stick to it.

S - A lot of different layers of caramel malt all seem a bit different from the last. A good toasty aroma going on. Rye spices and a bunch of grapefruit hoppiness. A real treat in the nose.

T - Excellent and sweet caramel malts with solid spiciness all the way through. Big hits of fresh grapefruit, floral, and citrus like hops with some a pleasant spice kick of rye in the finish.

M - Good medium body that has a founders like thickness feel in the mouth. Enjoyable and pretty easy going at 6.6%.

O - red's rye p.a. is a pretty complex brew with lots of both worlds. Malt, hops, and spices are all paired very well and allow for a tasty beer. I can't really say anything bad about anything I've had brewed by Founders and red's rye is no different. It's a must try for anyone and one you can continue to grab year round without any doubt.
