This brew poured out as a nice looking reddish brown color. With a pretty good sized white head on top. The lacing is a little sticky and it also has a good retention. The smell of the beer had plenty of spicy rye mixing with floral hops. The taste of the beer was citrusy, bitter and spicy. It had a really nice drinkable mouthfeel and it went down really well. Overall it's. OT my favorite Founders brew but it's still pretty damn tasty.

A: Hazy dark brown, like walnut shells. Head is thick and looks like frothy caramel icing, like the ones on top of a german chocolate cake.

S: Hop laden, and smells a little bit like burnt crystal malts. Smells a little bit like peanut butter, in a good way.

T: A tapastry of crystal and chocolate malts, blended ever so carefully with a good helping of citrus hops that dont overwhelm, but add to the chorus of flavor notes that linger ever so delicately on the palate. Rye taste is present but overwhelmed by the sheer emensity of the balance of this beer. This beer is not dominant in any one flavor. The hop notes are mostly apricot and lemon.

M: Smooth and lightly carbonated if you give it a nice vigerous pour which yields a two finger head. Drinks a little bit like a porter or scotch ale.

O: i was really taken a back by this beer. It snuck its way into my six pack of centenial ipa without me even noticing. im probably going to head back tomorrow and see if i can buy the rest. What a good solid beer.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Thanks to thabigmp for this one.

A: Darker orange with a slight red tint. Half finger slightly off white head with OK retention and decent lacing.

S: Mainly citrus and pine hops, with neither dominating. Good caramel malt backbone. Has some slight grassy/earthy/rye notes.

T: Nice caramel upfront. Piney, citrusy hops in the middle with slight earthy notes and a touch of rye. The rye really comes through in the end and aftertaste. Not real bitter or spicy. Well balanced all the way through.

M: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Not real crisp or dry or refreshing.

O: I’m not a big rye fan but this is a pretty good one. What else would I expect from founders? Drinkable and good but I wouldn’t buy it for my tastes.

A bit dated from my notes...
A: Dark amber, brownish....poured with an off white head.
S: A citrus hoppy aroma, full of rye over the top, very inviting!
T: Piney-spruce, with the rye taste right behind it, then the bitterness hits. Sweet with a tart/bitter finish.
M: Light mouthfeel...excellent carbonabtion
O: A great combination of flavors that come together in this brew.

Very cloudy caramel colour. No real head, which means no lacing.

Smells like American Hops. Citrus and pine everywhere. Nice touch of bittering. Smells like on hell of an APA.

Did they grind up fresh Michigan pine cones and needles? because it tastes like it. Both initial tastes and subsequent drinks just reveal what a pine cone were to taste like if you brewed with it. Strangely, I like it. Its got a decent malt backbone that feels light and somewhat sweet (the caramel malt really adds a layer of smoothness that helps mellow out all the Amarillo Hops).

Theres enough hops to make their presence known, yet its not too much. If you like hops, this is your drinkable beer right here.

A: Caramel, light brownish....poured with a head, when calm, a somewhat foamy thickness over the beer.
S: A lite hoppy aroma, full of rye over the top, very nice!
T: Once again hoppy, with the rye taste right behind it, then the bitterness hits. Sweet with a bitter finish, but the bitter is good,
because you keep coming back for sip of the sweet!
M: lite on the carbonation, just the right stuff
O: Plain and simple I just like the combination of the complex
flavors that come together in this rye beer. Great all the way

A- pours a beautiful rustic deep amber color with two fingers of off white head.

S- dry malt aromas with a spicy rye note. Fruity sweet orange peel and floral hop aromas. Very balanced great aroma.

T- initial blast of leafy hops that soon transitions into really juicy grapefruity hops. Finishes with a smooth hop bitterness and spicy rye flavors.

MF- smooth juicy mouthfeel medium body and average carbonation.

D- great drinkability.

Overall a superb rye beer with great hop character.

t: great rye flavor. nice blend of piney hops and caramel malts but the rye kicks in at the end and is sublime.

o: Wow, another great beer from Founders. I believe this is my first rye beer and I imagine it will be tough to beat as the benchmark for the style. Highly recommended.

Pours a clear caramel amber with a small off-white head.

Smells of citrus hops with some bready malt.

Starts off with a faint piney bitterness. Rounds into a bready biscuity flavor then finishes with a dry spicy pine presence.

Mouthfeel is a touch thin, but not too detracting. Carb levels are good.

Another solid beer from Founder's. A very good go to for a nice year round beer.

A - Pours murky brown red with a great lacing tan foam head.

S - Earthy hop presence with the faintest of a barley backed finishing "sniff".

T - Follows along with the nose with a tongue full of earthy yet slightly grapefruit-ish taste.

M - Big bitterness from start to finish with lots of grapefruit taste in the lingering aftertaste. Maybe a little sweetness in the aftertaste as well. Smooth almost creamy on the tongue in this full bodied and medium carbonated beer.

O - Quite a well balanced beer with lots of character and depth.

Enjoyed in a stange

A: pours a murky deep amber color with a consistency similar to cider, pours with a finger of fine off white light tan colored head that lingers nicely and leaves a solid amount of lacing on the glass
S: slight whiskey scent with a bit of sweetness and a nice malt character
T: begins with a slight sweetness then moves into a slight whiskey character and finishes with a slight sweetness of molasses
M: medium carbonation tingle initially then moves into a nice silkiness and ends with a slight alcohol or carbonation burn at the back of the throat
O: a good brew, could be a bit nicer on the nose but works nicely with the taste and overall mouth feel, really loved the appearance on texture of this one

s: floral bouquet of citrus and pine hops. malt and a little peppery spice.

t: hops with a little malt and rye in the mix.

m: bitter, medium body good carbonation so you know it's alive and not flat.

o: one of founders best and hard for anybody to beat this when it comes to rye beer.

Yet another beer I opened and the sent filled the room. There was quite the yeasty-rye aroma. A nice color, and what a taste. Super-rye flavor, with just the perfect hint of hops. Enough to taste it, but not overwhelmingly so. Just a fantastically solid brew from Founders, per usual.

Pours a distinctive amber red with slight haziness and a mild off white sudsy head.

Smells of light peppery spice, sweet maltiness, as well as some piney and citrus hoppiness.

Lots of good flavors. Piney hops along with some bitter citrus right up front. The spiciness of the rye comes through nicely with the hops, followed by a pronounced caramel maltiness and a slightly bitter, clean finish.

Very balanced medium to full bodied ale with great mild carbonation.

This is very tasty and at least my bottle tastes noticeably better than it smells. The color and taste explain why this is a benchmark for this style of beer.

amber color. head retention is ok. aroma is nice and spicy. cloves maybe. tastes kind of like rye bread. the malt character is quite different from any amber ales or ipas i've had. quite pleasant. nice hoppiness (balanced bitters at the end. nice aromas up front). carbonation is low. finish is medium. nice. but i have a feeling my bottle might be a little low. a stronger carbonation wouldve made this a much more pleasant experience

Wow, what a nice pleasant beer that has no flaws to speak of. I will never be able to review a beer in the same professional manner as some of you but I can tell you this. Try this one and it will speak for itself.

Founders is simply an amazing brewery that has mastered their craft. This beer is no exception. From the nose to the lacing and down the hatch this one has it all.

Red ruby grapefruit with hints of cut grass and lemon zest dominate the nose. The pallet is clean and crisp.

The first thing I did after trying this is jump on the PC to see if this was seasonal or year round. Thankfully this is a year round beer.

I will leave it to the pro's to break it down structurally and simply say, this jewel is beautiful.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a muddy bronze color with a half a finger of tan colored soapy head. Head leaves some light spots of lacing on the glass that slides back into the beer eventually, receding to a thin collar of bubbles and a lightly hazy surface. Really hazy, but some very active carbonation right at the edge of the glass rising quickly.

Nose is a good amount of grapefruit and orange, with a good spicy rye presence, cardamom and peppery. Nice caramel malt backbone that complements the other aromas.

Follows the nose, some light grapefruit bitterness first, then a bit of the rye flavors, spicy, bready, peppery. Finishes dry with some light spiciness and bitterness that lingers a little.

Light to medium body with a lot of small bubble carbonation that is prickly on the tongue. Easy drinking and tasty rye beer. One of the better ones that I've tried.
