Drinking this at Strange Brew in Allentown, PA. Just finished a SingleCut Softley Spoken Magic Spells, and to be honest, this one isn't working. The smell is by far the best part. It is like a floral bouquet. It smells so nice. The look is light and red, very transparent. The feel is like somewhat flat Coors Light. And the taste is pretty bitter after the DIPA I just had. I want to like it based on reviews, but am struggling to get past the bitter. I am probably not the best judge of IPAs.
But if you want to drink the best of the best, Strange Brew seems to always deliver. I am looking at Sole and Racer Cafe 15 on the menu...

I haven't seen this in a couple or years, I'm afraid it's gone the way of Double Trouble and Devil Dancer.
L: Itsa copper color with a small off white head, minimal lacing.
S: Grapefruit, but not much.
T: Spicey, from the rye, some malt.
O: I really like this beer.

There is a strong smell and taste of grapefruit in the beer (even though no grapefruit is used). The rye adds a nice spiciness to the beer. This is a great beer to have on a hot day. I wish that this was still a year round offering.

(From notes taken at the Hop Cat in Ann Arbor.) Poured from draft into a pint glass, a clear golden red with excellent head and lacing. It has a sweet floral smell. The taste has a ice spicy hoppiness that gives this beer a rich taste and feel. Red ales and rye beers are both favorites and this is a great beer!

I am not typically an IPA fan, so take that for what it is worth. I like this beer becaus it is not overly hoppy, but enough to let you know it's an IPA. Smell is not overly dramatic, but not bad. Taste is where it shines. A malty IPA feel that isn't too hoppy to be a distraction. Floral citrus notes with just a touch of bitter sweet.

Founders Red's Rye IPA, 6.6% ABV, 70 IBU, style is Rye Beer. Pours thin and medium red with a finger of white foamy head that dissipated quickly and left some lacing. Nose is roastiness, taste is roasted rye and a bit of sweetness, not as bitter as I had expected. OK mouthfeel. Not my favorite style, but is decent, and refreshing. Wouldn't seek another out, though wouldn't turn one down.

Rye, Hops Cloudy Red Pour. A disquieting amount of sediment.Nice Grainy Rye and hop Flavor once everything settled down. Touch of Strawberry?Light on carbonation. Odd Beer, maybe I got a bad batch. Bottle exploded upon opening though it had just sat perfectly still in my fridge for over 48 hours. As a result the beer was very flat.
RE-RATED LATER: Upped ratings after 2nd-6th beers were better, still a lot of sediment and low carbonation, but smoother feel when the experience doesn't start with a bang and a face full of foam.

Had a 16oz draft in a pint. A great red IPA with grapefruit bitterness (not to much). The beer goes down easily although it isn't my favorite red IPA. I have only had one glass of this ever and certainly would like to try it again!

Comes in darker than red, light brown. 3/4" head with substantial retention. Aroma was not as hoppy as amarillos usually are, the rye tempered this a little methinks.

Taste was solid amount of rye, bready. Hopped up, but not into ipa territory I thought. Plenty of caramel and rye all over this. One of those 2nd tier rye hoppy beers for sure. Good, not great.

Draught pour at Davis Beer Shoppe into a nonic pint. Pours a gorgeous amber brown with 1.5 fingers of high density light tan head that did not dissipate quickly and left a sheet of lacing. Nose was a little mute, sweetness possibly from caramel malt, spicy from the rye. Loved the taste, lots of spice with pleasant but not overwhelming hop character. Mouthfeel was very good, carbonation spot on, and the finish has a hint of bitterness in a sea of spicy. This is a great example of a red rye IPA done right! Really hoping to find it bottled at some point as I want lots more!

I love a good Rye IPA and this is one which defines the genre. Full bodied and spicy the way a RyePA should be. Pours a deep golden with spicy, earthy hop notes bubbling up from the depths. Taste is like a rollercoaster of flavor, so complex and rich. Like the Sam Adams commercials say of Jim Koch, I practically chew this brew. Overall one of my favorites.

Pretty decent. Not even within the same r atmosphere as the hype/current rating though. Tastes like a malty pale ale from the pacific NW with a hint of rye. Founders continues to baffle me. I don't think I have had a beer they make that has been even close to as good as the rating it has on this site. Not sure if the quality has declined in recent years or of people have just overrated their beers. Wouldn't get again unless in a real pinch.

wow this was good, will have to have another, one of the fusion styles and more rye than IPA, much sweeter and grapefruit notes, good taste complex and great carbonation, will try more, much better than suspected.

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours deep copper with a creamy khaki head that settles to a firm layer and leaves plenty of nice lacing.

S: Plenty of citrus, kinda toasty bready, a little spice, and some caramel sweetness.

T: Citrus, orange and grapefruit, nice rye spice, nice toasty bready, and some caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Pretty darn tasty.

I have been a hop-head for nearly 12 years now and this is my favorite hoppy beer after having sampled 500 plus. My only beef is that Founder's pulled this as a full-time offering in a 6-pack and brought it back as a seasonal beer in a 4-pack for the same price. But I must admit, it is still worth it.

A: crystal clear; deep reddish amber in color; 1 finger off white head that receded to a thick collar; nice lacing;

S: grapefruit, floral, a little rye spiciness;

T: malty up front, hoppy at the end; starts with caramel, followed by a bit of rye spiciness; grapefruit becomes more prevalent at mid-palate and stays through the finish; mild bitterness at the finish that builds through the aftertaste;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: very nice; the rye spice is a nice lead-in to the hop bitterness;

Enjoyed on tap. Pours a lovely, hazy deep red with a creamy white head.
The aroma is loaded with tropical fruits and a hint of spice and a touch of candied fruit.
Hops up front with grapefruit and orange, a little pineapple sweetness and some spicy rye mid taste. A long, lingering and chewy, slightly resinous finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and rether smooth.
Really good stuff.

Deep mahogany color, hazy. Lots of thin bubbles streaming. Thick rocky head.

Grapefruity, cirtus, herbal, sweet malts, a bit peppery from the rye.

Hop bitterness up front, grapefruit, citrus, herbal, a little piney. Deep malt character, sweet bread, caramel, a little peppery (rye). Finish is semi-dry, a little zesty. Body is full, juicy, a little oily, very smooth, semi-refreshing.

Well made Rye IPA, it's a world class!!

Had it on tap at Norse Bar. A dark copper color, aroma of sweet malts and slightly citrusy hops. Taste is similar, though there's a stronger sweetness, especially in the finish. Texture is amazing, thick and creamy. I am sorry that this is no longer available in bottles. It's great to find it on tap but I wish this were a year-round beer in bottles.

Went to Founders over the weekend had it on tap there, a shame this isn't bottled anymore due to a short shelf life. This is a world class brew, easily the best rye beer I've had.

Just not a fan of IPA, being a Rye beer and a bit different was hoping this would be the one to win me over but simply did not. Red's Rye is definitely a bit sweeter than a normal IPA but just didn't do it for me. If you already like IPA you will most certainly love this beer seeing as even I found it tolerable but if you are like me and have not found an IPA you have liked maybe skip this one. I was able to pick this up as a single so don't feel too bad for trying it out.

Had on tap at the Nightingale.
A: Brilliant red tinted amber with a 1” off-white foam collar that clings to the side to the glass.
S: Smells like half a Texas ruby red grapefruit sitting next to a slice of light rye toast.
T: An assertive grapefruit rind bitterness balances big caramel malt flavors.
F: Creamy, silky, medium for medium full body, medium carbonation.
O: A well balanced, assertively bitter, rye IPA.

Invested in a full 1/2 barrel for my home tap. Love this stuff. Great balance of bitter, body and unique flavor of rye. Nice maroon color and head that creates a nice lacing. Avoid if you don't like rye. But if that is good for you, it is a great alternative to super hoppy west coast ipas.

At a Brass Tap near Tampa, FL. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a transluscent pale reddish-copper. Smells of grapefruit zest and piney hops. Tastes like a grapefruit IPA with a malty rye backbone. Well balanced, clean bitterness at the end. Very drinkable, not too sweet, something that could be my new go-to. Will need more for further testing. 4.45/5
