A bit of a surprising beer to find on tap in Puerto Rico, where you really have to go digging for craft, but count on Taberna Lupulo for a heck of a selection, and I was overjoyed to have this one there today. As IPA goes, it's a nice one, but maybe a step behind the best hoppy beer folders does. I love the hop profile, pineapple on the grill and fresh orange melon, bright and fruity but also well bitter late. Quite a bit more of the crystal and caramel malts than I like in my hoppy beer though, it's overly weighty in body and with more biscuity pancakey substance than it needs. The hips are Sheehan delicate and very tropical, and just don't need this much grain in there. It's fluffy and active on the tongue though, and tastes really fresh. Also sturdy, I haven't had any beer this string since I have been here in Puerto Rico, so the extra American punch is very welcomed this time around, but with the bigger body, may limit drinkability for dome in other contexts. At the very least it's a memorable tasting beer. I'd like a few more examples of this hop to compare, but I liked this one pretty well.

Bottled 1/7/16.

Pours a hazy light copper with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of tropical fruit, citrus fruit, citrus juice, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with tropical fruit, citrus zest, and pine needle flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and super easy to drink.

A: The beer is slightly hazy amber orange in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige colored head that died down a bit but consistently left a short head covering the surface and thick lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of mangos and citrusy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of mangos and orange citrus along with a light to moderate amount of bitterness and notes of caramel malt undertones.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA has a nice blend of mangos and oranges in the smell and taste.

1L howler from Sherbrooke Liquor store, who currently have a soft launch of the five new Founders brews that have recently made it up to Alberta.

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and very bubbly off-white head, which leaves some splendid sudsy and webbed lace around the glass as it lazily sinks out of sight.

It smells of tropical fruit-based chewing gum, bready and grainy caramel malt, a bit of estery yeastiness, and more leafy, weedy, and resinous piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a mixed domestic citrus and exotic (mango and guava, perhaps) fruitiness, some damp minerality, and more zingy leafy, herbal, and soused-up piney verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite tame in its lollygagging frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, as the hops keep their metaphorical hands inside the windows at all times here. It finishes off-dry, but not by all that much, with the lingering bitter and fruity hops wrasslin' like their lives depended on it.

Overall - well, the Azacca hop sure knows how to hold its own in this offering, exhibiting broad tropical notes over a capable base malt. Not much more going on than that, but that's a-ok by this observer. Oh, and the elevated 14-proof alcohol quotient? Merely a whisper of a suggestion of a besotted dream.

Hot on the heels of Mosaic Promise, Founders love affair with "single-hop" IPA now steps into the juicy and tropical world that Azacca hops provide.

The firm amber-stained ale is bright and bold, casting a froth aromatic ecru foam stance with juicy pineapple, red grapefruit, mango, apricot and melon. To taste, its rich caramel, pecan and toasted sweetness is steadfast and moderately rich.

With the middle palate opening to the hops, its malt presence relaxes slightly but remains caramel-rich with hints of cracker-jacks candy. And the wafts of ripe fruit begin with a bold citrus tone of grapefruit, orange and lemon and then quickly turn to canteloupe, mango, pineapple and then a bright herbal bitterness that's remiss of chive and fresh-cut grass.

Siding as much with amber ale as of IPA, the medium-bodied ale retains a caramel and malty taste and texture to support the strong bitterness in finish. Drying but not absolute, the beer's closing arguments are sharp of citrus peel, grass and peppercorn with an aftertaste of candied citrus.

On-draught @ Founders. Currently a taproom only release. Expectations are low; I don't usually like Founders' hoppy offerings too much. Review is brief since I'm on a smartphone:

A: 2.5cm head of off-white colour. Decent thickness and frothiness. Retention is nice - about 4-5 minutes. Leaves light lacing as it recedes.

Body is a clear vibrant copper. Clean, with no visible yeast particulate or hop sediment.

Looks nice for an IPA. Not unique or special looking.

Sm: Pale malts and a balanced hop profile. Floral notes, vague fruit, faint grass, new world mango hop character.

Suggests a balanced enjoyable brew with a pleasing albeit conventional hop profile.

I detect no off-notes, booze, or yeast.

Aromatic intensity is average.

T: Pale malt sweetness. Hop profile is mild and reticent, actually. The usual floral notes, plus assertive hop bitterness with hints of pine and rindy bitterness. Somewhat herbal.

It's a contained, reticent, slightly shallow IPA. Fine, but not unique, special, or a paragon of this over saturated style. I like it for what it is, and I find no off-notes, booze, or alcohol.

Mf: Medium-bodied. Slightly overcarbonated. Smooth, wet, crisp. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

O: Drinkable and pleasant enough, but it won't impress fans of the style. Founders continues to have trouble turning out a truly impressive IPA. I wouldn't recommend it to friends.

Pours a copper gold with a finger of head that dissipates to a collar with ample lacing throughout. Heavy malt aroma. and taste. Well balanced between sweet and bitterness. Solid enjoyable beer.

Reddish orange with good clarity, tons of drippy lace and long lasting coverage.
Pungent aroma when first poured, a hint of earthy tropical mango. Later it becomes more earthy and spicy, light citrus, vaguely yeasty.

Taste is firmly bitter, earthy with dandelion greens in the back, lightly fruity, finishes dry.
Pretty lean and easy drinking. Light bodied with a lasting hoppy bitterness. Overall this is pretty solid and uncomplicated, I enjoyed it.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/15/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big peach, mango, pineapple, papaya, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light pepper, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big peach, mango, pineapple, papaya, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light pepper, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of peach, mango, pineapple, papaya, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance with zero astringent hop notes after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, and fairly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
