12 oz.

Pours a cloudy orange-red, yellowish fine head dissipates to a film.

Smells of apples, bourbon, sweet citrus hops, and some pine and molasses.

Tastes of bourbon, apples, and brown sugar malts, followed by a bitter grapefruit and maple hoppiness.

Full body with a bit of syrupy character, a stinging carbonation on the tongue, and a light singe of alcohol.

Pretty solid double IPA, really more like an American Barleywine. Good flavor and balance, quite enjoyable, and while it feels strong, it doesn't feel as strong as it is. Worth trying for sure, though there are better ABWs and DIPAs out there.

Bottled on 06/08/13, poured into a tulip.

Pours a dark iodine-amber-gold, cloudy, off-white head, not a lot obviously with the abv of this one, and doesn't last too long, and with minimal lacing. On the nose I'd say the malts, sweetness and booze dominant amazingly the large amount of hops in this beer, but there is a some florals and citrus. Starts of with lots of sweetness, caramel malts, sweet booze, syrup and citrus, finishes with a lot of drying bitterness, with some pith and pine resins, and still some booze after bite. As to mouth feel, it was like drinking malt syrup... very sticky, syrupy, rich and creamy.... almost like drinking a stout.... also drying... not much carbonation.

Overall it's hard to review as a IPA,DIPA or a Belgium triple.. not really what I was expecting and it certainly is a beer that hits hard... and that's not always a bad thing, but it's a fine line between making a triple style beer that is very strong, or a very triple hoppy beer, as I think the large amount of malts and thick body kill the hops a bit even as much as they tried to compensatre for it... an interesting beer for sure and worth trying... not your typical refreshing ipa, and more of something you can drink in the winter when you want a more hoppy alternative to a stout or barleywine.
