look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4.25

12 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, bottled 6/8/13, poured into my The Bruery tulip glass, drank over several hours.

Apperance: 3/3 - dark brown coloration, impressive clarity like Double Trouble (can both see or read through), minimal white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing with moderate middle residuals, big alcohol legs

Aroma: 10/12 - an admixture of grapefruit, pineapple and tropical fruits...and lots of booze c/w its 12% ABV; some bready/biscuity notes are also detectable but much more subdued than the two aforementioned

Flavor: 15/20 - a big hop and alcohol presence dominates initially; again, the malt characteristics are much more subdued, which mainly serve to add complexity to huge hop and alcohol presence; moderate bitterness and not overlying drying

Mouthfeel: 7/10 - full-bodied is an understatement; unlike the 9.4% in Double Trouble, alcohol is a major constituent in the mouthfeel as well; light-to-moderate carbonation is to be expected for the high ABV

Overall Impression: 8/10 - I read some of the other reviews, and, to be frank, was expecting a much worse beer; although I prefer Double Trouble, this is an excellent beer with all the characteristics you'd expect in an American barley...cough, "triple IPA"...big hop presence and alcohol in the aroma and flavor; it's a definite sipper and not nearly as refreshing as Double Trouble, but I'll certainly return to this again and would be interested to see how it ages too

Rating a 2015, did not like this one. Previously had rated a 2013 a 3.75. Too hot. Hides the taste of anything else except the malt. Very disappointed.

2013

A: Poured from bottle to tulip, color is a deep hazy copper. Small off white head that dissipates quickly and leave a small amount of lacing.

S: Huge caramel smell up front with an intense combination of citrus, piney, and spicy hop aroma.

T: Follows the nose with a big caramel sweetness up front and a very different hop character in the finish. The alcohol is very well hidden in this despite it being 12%.

M: Full bodied, fairly high carbonation, so so dry finish.

O: A good brew but I really can't justify the price, there are so many amazing IPA's for half the price.

Poured the Devil Dancer into a Tulip.

A - Pours amber color with a thin white head.

S - Some candied qualities, smooth malt, vanilla, orange and light grapefruit. Love the aroma on this one.

T - Bitterness right off the bat, grapefruit, pine needles. The hop monster comes out big time here. It grabs you and squeezes your tongue. Wow, not too bad.

M - Medium carbonation, smooth nice beer with some syrup qualities in there.

O - Not bad shit here, this is another quality brew from Founders. Enjoy! Cheers!!.
