Notes: A light, golden ale brewed using high end, lightly roasted, fruit forward coffees that don’t get too bitter or astringent. Brewed with a naturally processed, sun dried coffee from the Sidamo region of Ethiopia, roasted at Ferris Coffee, right here in town.

Bottled 8/10/16; drank 9/16/16 @ the Yarchives.

Cloudy orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice eggshell head; almost no lace.

Light roast coffee bean & mild vanilla notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Cream soda & light roast coffee bean flavors; mild carbonation bite on the finish.

Cloying &; this doesn't work for my palate at all.

Surprisingly tasty and not as light and airy as I expected. Tried this one on tap at Founders. Looks deceivingly simple - clear golden color with just a little head and very spotty lingering lacing. Smells of nice dark roast coffee. Tastes of that great dark coffee, grain, caramel, a little vanilla and dark chocolate and then a very nice malt backbone. I’ve never tasted coffee before in a beer that wasn’t a stout or porter - this was surprisingly well-balanced and didn’t overpower the light ale. Clean, smooth, mild mouthfeel and good mild carbonation. Very well done!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into glass. Bottle label is marked 'BOTTLED ON 08/18/16'.
Body color is dark amber, slightly hazy, with floating very small particulates. Head settles to thin ring. Minimal lacing.
Coffee predominates the aroma.
Taste is more fruity pale ale with coffee highlights.
Thin mouth feel.
Even at its advanced age, this beer still expresses the combined expression of fruit hops and richer coffee.

How did I miss this? Pales are not my thing but I did try (and enjoy) Neshaminy Creek Coffee JAWN and Victory Coffee Creme. both lighter bodied coffee beers. And last years Rogue Cold Brewed IPA was spectacular. Ok I just checked, this was not distributed to Philadelphia. How can you not distribute to the number one beer drinking city in the USA? ... Whatevs. Crossed the bridge into NJ found this on the shelf 9 months old how could any coffee flavor remain, right?

Wrong. Very pretty well carbonated pale with nicely nutty roasted sweet mild coffee aroma and flavor. Great mouthfeel, smooth and very satisfying.

Overall outstanding and I can only imagine how good this was fresh. Hope it's made again. and this time, don't skip Philly. Seriously.

BOD 8/10/16. Clear copper pour with a light touch of amber. Outstanding head volume, normal lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of soft rich coffee over a slightly sweet base. Caramel is hinted at, while a slightly sweet fruit ( possibly peach ) note is the most evident background sensation. The aromas are well balanced but severely dissipate in about 5 minutes.

Medium body with a texture that is deceptively smooth and quite slick. The carbonation / body balance is normal to slightly under carbonated. Mid-palate effervescence is adequate but quite enough to really open the flavors up. The finish is a light tingle.

The flavor profile is very good but a bit deceptive relative to the nose. Coffee is present but remains a background player rather than stealing the show. That said, the beer is exquisitely balanced. Nothing dominates - but - nothing really shines either. Coffee makes itself noticeable just before the finish in a subtle fashion. Overall, it is a nice blended flavor of light sweet fruit, light caramel, very little bitterness and coffee. The finish is smooth and a touch of coffee lingers.

First Pale Ale with coffee that I have tried, like the stouts with coffee much, much more. The bitterness and coffee did not pair well with me. Nice aroma and look. I will keep with IPAs without coffee and stouts with. Cheers.

I was gifted this beer, i usually get my coffee goodness from stouts.
The beer is light in body like a pale ale, but has that coffee flavor. It's an odd beer, but not bad. If you want a coffee flavor in a lighter beer, I suppose this is for you. The beer i had was 6 months old and didn't spoil, if that matters for anything. I wouldn't age it intentionally though.

From Saveur-Biere. In Teku glass. Afte dinner. Very clear coffee in nose and mouth, maybe even more clear than in darker brews. Light but highly carbonated body. Traditional neutral hops. Low on foam

Very light on the nose. Very light toasted malt. Almost like Budweiser.

Taste is light malt and expresso. Nice sessionable beer. Not much complexity but nicer than a bud.

Good beer. Recommended.

Hazy, dark orange with a one finger, white head.

Nose: Coffee, citrus and malt.
Taste: About the same as the nose.
Mouth: Medium body. Medium carbonation. Light bitter ending.

This is not my type of beer. I don’t like the taste of coffee in a pale ale.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled 8/10/16, had 10/29/16.

Pours a mostly clear, darker golden color, with a one and a half inch head and a fair amount of soapy lacing. Active carbonation. The smell is coffee, yeast, light malt, some vanilla. Taste also leads with the coffee, then yeast, light malt, a light hop bitterness. Smooth, light bodied, well carbonated.

This is very good, just too light for me. The coffee is really well done, it doesn't overwhelm a pretty fragile style. Give it a try.

Bottled on 8/10/16.Pours into a standard pint a clear lighter golden shade with a half finger white head atop. The deeply roasted coffee and lighter grapefruit rind, the coffee is the star no char just nice roast.Mellow coffee on the palate with biscuit maltiness, and a bit of roasted nuts, finishing with a light smattering of leafy hops but not much of a presence.Normally I would want more hops in a pale ale even with the addition of coffee or anything else for that matter but this suits me just fine.

pours a murky golden amber with a tiny head that poofs. nose; coffee, yeast, & light citrus zest/hops. taste; light caramel malt, yeast, light coffee, tangerine, light lemon zest, & light citrus hops. medium carbonation & mouthfeel. the coffee notes are so odd coming from an amber beer! after the first few sips, it sort of takes on a nasty metal taste. an oddball.

I am sure that I've had this brew in the past, but I seem to have never reviewed it. It pours a hazy, earthy-orange color. The head is white. Nice aroma...Coffee comes out first, seemingly with a bit of chocolate...definitely roasted notes. There is some underlying malt and a bit of spicy hop presence. The taste is balanced, if not just slightly dry, and very engaging. Coffee continues through the taste, and the body is rounded and full. Enjoyable and very interesting beer.

Is there a better brunch beer? Restrained hops meander though a pale ale base beer and await the gentle coffee additions for a fruity, earthy, soft and sweet impact on the palate- just enough to ease you into your day.

Founders Pale Joe shows nary a sign of the exotic coffee blends as its pours the familiar pale amber hue and hosts a modest veil of haze. A creamy white froth swirls atop while gentle caramel, cashew, granola and coffee roll onto the nose. Caramel and granola simmer on the early palate in anticipation of what both the hops and coffee have to offer.

The coffee makes its mark on the middle palate with the nutty earthiness of toast, light soil, chicory spice, vanilla and cream. Plum and apricot come from both coffee and hops while its blond roast seems pleasantly buttery to the tastebuds. Mild hops apply a balancing bitterness to the finish with light grapefruit and orange with a kiss of spruce.

Medium bodied and full of earthen taste, the beer's finish is crisp and refreshing despite the coffee's attempt to provide robust taste. Bitterness seems as much coffee derived as it does from hops while its medium length aftertaste is of fruit and woods.

Pale Joe | Founders Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, the head on this brew is two fingers thick, with web-like lacing, and an opaque dark gold body.

Smells like earthy, grassy grains and delicate herbal/floral hops with subtler coffee notes.

I taste mild roasted coffee amidst clean, earthy malts with a floral hop element contributing to make this a unique pale ale.

Medium mouthfeel with mild carbonation.

Overall, I'll give Pale Joe | Founders Brewing Company a rating of a 4.5. Thank you for this bottle, @nicholas2121

Hazy brew - and flat. Bit of an orange pekoe tea look. Sediment is collected at glass bottom.

Coffee is not only the dominant smell, it's the sole smell. Close your eyes, you'ld think this is a cold coffee.

Malts and coffee, like a dose of caramel in your coffee. And pleasant bitterness, and smooth. Look and smell makes me hesitant, but this works. I pick up a little lemony sweetness, but nothing unpleasant. And a little watery but refreshing. Nice crisp finish with hops that linger. Straightforward flavors, but they work in concert to make it work.

This is one I enjoyed and will go back to. Odd combination, but when founders crafts the perfect balance, it works. well done.

Pale Joe brewed by Founders Brewing Company with an ABV of 5.40% This APA pours out a deep hazy amber color with a small white head. There is a decent amount of lacing to this brew. The smell of Pale Joe is rich with coffee flavors, grains and malts. Smells like a good morning to me, just saying. You also pick up on some nice mild hop notes in the smell of this brew. So far this APA is really inviting. Now for the taste it is , bold with coffee goodness, grins and malts. There is also a touch of sweetness, and some nice roasted flavors coming through the taste. There is a lot going on in Pale Joe. Pale Joe, is a fine mid to heavy drinking brew. This APA really hits the spot. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a real nice balance to it. I really like the coffee flavors in this APA. If you are looking for a good "coffee" style brew look this one up. The mouth feel of Pale Joe is Coffee, Rich ,Bold, Smooth and Refreshing. Overall I'm giving Pale Joe a 4.75 out of 5. I would definitely buy this brew again. Founders Brewing Company, did a super nice job with this brew. If you don't like coffee stay away.

Pours a hazy, maize color. 3/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong coffee (earthy, fresh, and not bitterly roasted), hint of yeast, and a hint of sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of strong coffee, sweet malt, sight yeast, hint of caramel malt, and a hint of hop. Overall, good appearance and feel, but the aroma and body are mostly coffee and lacking in hop to be recognized as an American Pale Ale.

Had on tap. Murky bronze with a white head. Smell features the coffee, grassy hops, slight grapefruit and lemon. Taste has a clash between the coffee and the hops, earthy and somewhat astringent, caramel malts don't help the balance, it's ok I guess. Feel is strangely sharp, but not percolated from the coffee, with a light malt feel selling the pale matrix. It is different, but don't need to have again

Poured from a 12 oz bottle, into a Cigar City snifter.

Thin,frothy,white head,that dissolves quickly.Golden / orange in color,with quite a bit of sediment floating around.Moderate / heavy carbonation.

On the nose I get light roasted coffee, and some light citrus notes. It also has a southern sweet tea aroma, blended with ice coffee.Slight hint of caramel and malts.

The palate pretty much follows the nose, light roasted coffee, with some bright citrus flavors. It tastes like a mix of southern sweet tea,and ice coffee.

The body is light, with a wet finish.

It's a deep cloudy orange gold that starts with a decent white head that burns off pretty quickly. It leaves thing rings of lacing. The aroma is light but distinctly coffee with a little bit of caramel malts. The taste is much the same and it has a nice balance. The body is lighter and has a subtle but persistent fizz to it.
