Surprisingly tasty and not as light and airy as I expected. Tried this one on tap at Founders. Looks deceivingly simple - clear golden color with just a little head and very spotty lingering lacing. Smells of nice dark roast coffee. Tastes of that great dark coffee, grain, caramel, a little vanilla and dark chocolate and then a very nice malt backbone. I’ve never tasted coffee before in a beer that wasn’t a stout or porter - this was surprisingly well-balanced and didn’t overpower the light ale. Clean, smooth, mild mouthfeel and good mild carbonation. Very well done!

Been a few months since I've had a coffee-infused pale ale... I think the last one that I enjoyed enough to write about was Sixpoint's C.R.E.A.M. actually. This is a sub-style/trend that I am ever-dubious about but I also try to keep an open mind about it in general, so without further ado...

Pours a very pale (4-6 SRM) color with a compact head that seems to leave very little in the way of lace. Though the foam that's there retains somewhat decently, the medium-translucent body doesn't feel far enough in either direction for me. With this kind of beer, I really would like either full opacity or very clean and clear... this seems to occupy a middle point that doesn't satisfy me too much, to be honest.

Nose is wondrously coffee-forward, with a nutty complexion and a whiff of ripe stone fruit among some slight notes of caramel and citrus peel. Earthy and bold, this is what I expect from Founders' coffee beers considering their fantastic Sumatra Mountain Brown ranks as easily one of my top 5 coffee infused beers of all time. Love the complex and balanced profile here. Slight, crispy acidity from the coffee and a svelte malt profile rule the day in the nose. Great stuff.

Taste is a bit less impressive, carrying a slight cardboard flavor that feels a bit like the coffee fell off quicker on the palate than it did olfactorily. Still has some semi-bold citrus with a slight hoppy/bitter twang that reminds me of Cascade and Centennial hops. The malt base is pretty nutty and basic feeling, but that cardboard-ish coffee flavor is a bit too forward for me and the acidity doesn't help the feel here either. This is a bit too light/thin in body for its own good, in my opinion. Not my favorite example of a lighter-colored coffee ale. Glad I only got a single.

Bottled on 8/10/16.Pours into a standard pint a clear lighter golden shade with a half finger white head atop. The deeply roasted coffee and lighter grapefruit rind, the coffee is the star no char just nice roast.Mellow coffee on the palate with biscuit maltiness, and a bit of roasted nuts, finishing with a light smattering of leafy hops but not much of a presence.Normally I would want more hops in a pale ale even with the addition of coffee or anything else for that matter but this suits me just fine.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a pale amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A roasty and earthy aroma with a scent of coffee beans and earthy hops. Upfront scent of coffee beans along with subtle hints of chocolate and vanilla. Earthy hops with some hints of grass. Bready malt scent of biscuit, toast, grains, and cracker with some yeast. A very nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and earthy taste with notes of coffee beans and earthy hops. Big upfront taste of coffee beans. Malt notes of biscuit, toast, chocolate, grains, and cracker along with yeast. Sweet notes of vanilla and honey. Earthy hop notes of grass and slight citrus. A very good roasty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and very smooth with a drying finish.

Overall: A very good twist on a Pale Ale. Very nice coffee flavor with a solid hop presence.

Appearance: Pale golden in my pint glass at Louisville Hop Cat. No visual clue to the contents’ coffee infusion. Slight head.

Aroma: Coffee grounds, up and front. Really enticing and unusual.

Taste: Chewy, with balanced hops and malts but really a substantial amount of coffee. Really tasty and one I really enjoyed. Creative brew, and one worth trying if you appreciate coffee as much as you do beer!

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pale Joe is an intriguing combination of a pale ale with coffee added. Overall, it works as the coffee is integrated into the beer nicely creating a nice level of smoothness.

10/29/15 Stirling Hotel Draft

Founders Night at the hotel saw this on tap and never heard of it so gave it a try. Pours golden tan that defently resembles a pale ale more than a coffee beer. The head is decent with a good lace to the glass.

The smell has a combo of hops and a big nose of coffee. Very interesting since the look doesn't seem like a typical coffee beer.

The taste is great. Very smooth and well put together. Upfront its a bit of a bitter hop but quickly turns into a sweeter coffee flavor. Maybe some caramel and cream flavor as well.

Excellent beer. Founders really needs to get this one out there in bottles or cans. Very well done.

Pale Joe brewed by Founders Brewing Company with an ABV of 5.40% This APA pours out a deep hazy amber color with a small white head. There is a decent amount of lacing to this brew. The smell of Pale Joe is rich with coffee flavors, grains and malts. Smells like a good morning to me, just saying. You also pick up on some nice mild hop notes in the smell of this brew. So far this APA is really inviting. Now for the taste it is , bold with coffee goodness, grins and malts. There is also a touch of sweetness, and some nice roasted flavors coming through the taste. There is a lot going on in Pale Joe. Pale Joe, is a fine mid to heavy drinking brew. This APA really hits the spot. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a real nice balance to it. I really like the coffee flavors in this APA. If you are looking for a good "coffee" style brew look this one up. The mouth feel of Pale Joe is Coffee, Rich ,Bold, Smooth and Refreshing. Overall I'm giving Pale Joe a 4.75 out of 5. I would definitely buy this brew again. Founders Brewing Company, did a super nice job with this brew. If you don't like coffee stay away.
