Notes: reDANKulous Imperial Red IPA is a no frills, bold 9.5% ABV India Pale Ale. It pours a pleasing burnt amber with some sweetness due to the Caramalt and roasted barley used in the malt bill. But hops are the true headliner in this elaborate sensory experience. The spicy, piney, tropical complexities of Chinook, Mosaic and Simcoe hops hit you right away with their dank aroma—and they stick around. Take a sip to have your palate simultaneously walloped and caressed in all the right places. Combined, the hops take the beer to 90 IBUs. It’s not just ridiculous. It’s reDANKulous.

A: [3.75] Way dark! Cola colored with red hues. The beer has a really lush finger of dense khaki head. The bottle lists the ABV (9.5%) and there is a bottled date (06/06/2016)

S: [3.25] A name like reDANKulous sets a certain expectation. This is not meeting it. The nose is really flat. Some caramel and crackers. That is about it.

T: [3.25] Coco, dark cherries, pine. Not a lot of malt to balance it out. Quite a bit of bitter on the finish - kind of harsh bitter.

M: [3.25] This beer is smooth and creamy. Nice rich feel on the tongue. The over accentuated bitter finish detracts from the nice mouthfeel.

O: [3.25] One of my least favorite Founders beer. This is just a straight miss in my opinion. The nose is weak the flavors are all skewed to the bitter side with no malts. On the positive side the 9.5% alcohol is hidden but that doesn't make up for the flaws. I'd rather drink two All Day IPAs than one of these because they pack more flavor into half the ABV.

L: Deeeep dark rich red. Brown. Like deep dark red ice tea. Yet perfectly clear. Not much head.
S: Sweet fruity hops. Light complementary malts
T: Malt/hop balance at first. Hop forward but not overpowering. Malt then takes back seat and hop comes forward.
F: Clean finish, not sharp carbonation. Wet but dry finish? Feel the strength 9.5 ABV

Some crazy strong beer here. Not a casual drink, a bit pricy at $3 per bottle. Once in a while beer.

pours a dark and deep red with a thick white head.

fantastic aroma, i can smell it from 2 feet away; good start! smells like citric bomb.

the taste is sharp, hints of resin and citric fruit. dry finish. finishes with dryness and maybe some char.

goes down smooth, isn't too thick, thin, or syrupy. very enjoyable. really smooth and creamy.

fantastic beer, so glad i picked up 2 bottles of this while i could. saving the other for another day.

re-review of a 4pack bottled 6/6/16 and drinking 6/18/16.
tastes different very fresh, lots of malt to it.

Bottle poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Holy hell, this is a man’s beer! Pours a muddy dark orange with a decent fluffy head considering the ABV. Smells and tastes phenomenal with massive malt presence very deftly balanced by incredible citrus hops. ReDANKulous indeed! Love it. Another stunning beer from Founders. Cheers!

This beer is awesome. Best Red IPA ever had and exactly what I wanted from Bells Mars but didn't deliver. This delivers. Super hoppy, red tinted color, beautiful foamy head, mouthfeel is bitter and heavily dank with pine needles. Taste is pine, berries, melon, and nugget. This beer is super dank. Founders you kick ass! This is the best imperial IPA ever. Sticky icky good.

I picked up a four pack of Founders ReDANKulous Imperial Red IPA at Meijers. I missed out on this beer the first time it was released and I made sure to track some down this time, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a IPA glass.

A- The label looks good, it's got a nice design and it's a little eye catching. It poured a nice brown and burgundy color that took on more of a ruby crimson color when held to the light with almost two fingers worth of creamy light tan head died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice rings of patchy lacing behind. This is a very nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a mixture of fruity, floral, slightly soapy, and green hop aromas with some fruit aromas in the background imparting citrus rind and grapefruit like aroma with some light tropical fruit like aromas. Up next comes some doughy yeast that's followed by the malts which impart a toasted malt, caramel malt, bready, grainy and bread crust like aroma. This beer has a good aroma, it's nicely balanced.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart the same mix of hoppy aspects that they did in the aroma with the fruit hops seeming to stick out just a little more than the other aspects. Up next comes some doughy yeast which leads right into the malts which impart all the same malty aspects that they did in the aroma and they show up just a little more. On the finish there's a higher amount of medium bitterness with a little bit of sweetness and it had nice fruity, green hop and floral hop aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, it's well balanced and the hop profile is nice.

M- Fairly smooth, slightly creamy, crisp, on the lighter side of being full bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and good example of the style, it had everything that I look for in an Imperial Red IPA and all the aspects worked well together with that nice balance that I expect from the style. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink a couple, but that would be my limit. What I like the most about this beer was the balance, it was right where it needed to be for the style. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, it didn't really have any weak point other than the light soapy hop aspects in the aroma. I would buy this beer again if the y release it next year and I would recommend checking it out of if your a fan of the style or big hoppy beers in general. All in all I was happy with this beer, it came tougher just how I was hoping it would and it was pretty much a text book example of the style. It's not a favorite Founders beer, but it is one of the better Imperial Red IPA's I've had. Good job guys, this is a tasty beer, keep it up.

Serving: 750mL bottle poured into a Founder's taproom pint glass. No bottled on date, but this can't be more than 6 weeks old at this point.

A: Pours a dark copper-red color. Not cloudy or hazy. Soft off-white head that sticks around.

S: Pineapple, mango, grapefruit. Some piney and early hops in there as well. Can tell it's a mixed batch of hops, lots of different characters coming through. Lots of sweet malts as well.

T: Very sweet up front. Lots of sweet, bready malts that I notice even before the hops. Up next is the mix of tropical and earthy hops. Pineapple and nectarine up front, finishing with a very dry and bitter pine and resinous flavor, with just a hint of spiciness as well.

M: Very full and rich. Great carbonation. 9.5% ABV is appropriate and just noticeable enough. Very bitter and bruising on the finish. Most of the "dank" character is here for me as the finish is just super hoppy, sweet, rich, wet and dank.

O: I'm always surprised to see what the next Backstage release is gonna be from Founder's. They really do brew for themselves, as this style is not super creative or novel. This beer is certainly something Founder's specializes in: a very big, bitter, hoppy DIPA. For Founder's, this is par for the course. This is a beer they could've thrown up in the tap room at any point as a one off, and I wouldn't blink an eye. I'd go, "Oh, another DIPA. Nice.". I'd drink it, enjoy it, and that'd be that. It doesn't knock my socks off and it doesn't change the game. BUT, it's still a really damn good beer. Founder's is very focused, and they've made as about a good Imperial Red IPA as anyone can make. Think of this almost as a "double Red's Rye". A solid beer, but one that many won't remember.

Recommendation: If you're keeping up with the Backstage series, I would definitely grab this as it's above average for the series.

Poured into a Surly IPA glass. A nice deep red, clear with barely a tint of haze.
Great head, thick and steady.
Aroma is raisin and hops, some fusels.
Tastes rich with sweet caramel, raisins, a touch of roast/chocolate, and remnants of fusels, bitter, and big. Everything I love in a strong ale.
Leaves a long bitter aftertaste of hops.
It may be a bit thin on the mouthfeel, maybe not. It's not chewy like some old ales, though everything else reminds me of one, and I've never had an imperial red. Whopping delicious either way if you like the big ones!

I'm not sure about the marketing of an Imperial Red when it reminds me more of strong ale/old ale, as already stated.

Pours a dark amber red with a thin layer of off-white foam.

Citrusy, fruity, dank, and a sweet malt backbone.

While more hop forward in the aroma, the malt bill definitely shines through in the flavor, sweet but subtle enough to let the dank, resinous, citrusy hop flavors come through.

Medium-bodied, medium carbonation, chewy, just the way I like an ale, regardless of style.

Overall, while I think this could use some fine tuning, all of the parts of a great beer are there, it just needs some work.

L - Beautiful glowing amber red with two fingers of eggshell head

S - Pretty bland. Some sweet malts and spruce/pine.

T - Malt nuke. Caramel and cherry. A slight pine resin. Can't believe there is little hop presence in this.

F - Full-bodied with no alcohol taste. Goes down easy. Flavors that are there are delicious.

O - This is "rendankulous" with the malt and not the hops. There's no bitterness or juiciness. The only indication that hops were used was the subtle pine from the Chinook. Extremely disappointed.

L: Extremely hazy (essentially opaque) brown-red in color. A small bit of tan-colored head.

S: Lots of hops, mostly of the resinous variety. A strong malt presence as well.

T: Nicely balanced combination of dark and sweet malts with a floral and resinous hop flavor. Very good.

F: Definitely fairly heavy-bodied. Not nearly as bitter as I was expecting...actually quite smooth. The carbonation level was medium-high and made the beer very crisp which was great.

Bomber into a pint glass. Date unknown since I can't find a bottling date or code, but it can't be more than a couple of months.

LOOK: Clear reddish brown with lots of bubbles and a finger of creamy, beige head.

SMELL: Ruby red grapefruit juice, tangerine peel, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, and pine. Also some berry, maybe blueberry, probably from the Mosaic hops.

TASTE: Peach, pineapple, passionfruit, and mango upfront. Caramel, toast, vanilla, wood smoke, and cherries in the middle. Finishes with a massive hit of grapefruit and pine. The aftertaste is sticky and oily, but not overly bitter. Very resinous and "dank".

FEEL: Medium-full body, creamy carbonation. Thick and filling.

OVERALL: Wow. Excellent, excellent hoppy beer from Founders. Showcases hop flavors beautifully. Get your hands on it!

An imperial red ipa? It reminds me a lot of a hoppy barleywine or an american strong ale like arrogant bastard ale. It's very nice anyway with a good part on the caramel and a grapefruit, resiny and herbal hop character

9/6/15. DE

Pours amber red with a nice foam white head with good retention on the glass.

The smell is more of a sweet malt with a background of hops.

The taste is a light sweet maltiness that is followed by a little piney hop presence. The hops are actually secondary to the hops in this one but it still works very well. It is smooth as can be and an easy drinker.

Overall, while not you typical IPA, it's still a unique flavored beer that one can appreciate.

When I come in, kickin' with a vengeance
Swift of the engines, coming like the three little Indians
Stompin' around on the ground on the plains
'Cause a ni**a like me, is goin' insane
In the brain, so I gotta maintain my direction
What I mighta gain without my protection
Not a damn thing, so when I come just bring that
New style break ya off like a chicken wing
So you can just suck my cock
Like a fat blunt, stoned is the way of the walk
When I'm peepin', checkin' out the punk ass creepin'
I let the dogs loose then I let the dogs sick 'em
Ni**a, don't make me catch ya punk
'Cause I still will be comin' at ya

Enjoyed on tap. Pours a reddish/brown with nice ruby highlights and a thin tan head.
Aroma is citrus and herbal with hints of pine and a bit of underlying spice.
Taste is very balanced. Pine, a little citrus, some peppery rye notes and some malty sweetness and a pleasing, resinous finish.
Mouthfeel is medium and a touch creamy.
Very good.
