Founders Brewing Co. "Harvest Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 10/03/16" and sampled on 12/06/16
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Appearance: Hazy golden body beneath a thick head of rocky white that holds quite well and leaves very nice lacing behind.

Aroma: Fresh and bright but not bold. Lively. Somewhat floral, but really more like an entire garden with aromas of grass and other green plants as well. Delicately piney and earthy. Fruity with apple, berry, and apricot. Soothing.

Flavor: Perhaps not surprisingly very similar to the aroma. The malt brings in a note of gently sugary sweetness, grain, and delicate golden caramel and soft toast. The berry character remains and makes me think of Mosaic, Simcoe, and a little bit of Amarillo (although I don't know what's in there). It's not overly grassy or expressive of chlorophyll as some fresh hop ales can be; nor does the alcohol show until you've reached the bottom of your glass. It's bitterness brings it to a dry conclusion but the fruitiness lingers with a little bit of pine. Really nicely rounded, and superbly balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium full in body with a smooth, fine-bubbled standard carbonation that lends a delicate caress.

Overall: I initially balked at the price after having realized what I'd paid for it ($4.49), and I thought how could it be worth that much? (I now understand I kind of got ripped off as some retailers were selling it for as low as $11/4-pack). After half a glass I was contented with it though as it was so pleasant and enjoyable. Compellingly drinkable and absolutely worth seeking out, I'll be waiting for the next release in October 2017!

Bottle poured into a Founders snifter

A: Pours slightly hazy golden amber with a frothy light tan head that settles to a nice layer and leaves some sticky lacing.

S: Tropical fruit, citrus, pine, grassy, floral, lightly toasted malt, and some caramel sweetness.

T: Resinous pine, tropical notes, passion fruit, citrus, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, a bit grassy, lightly toasted malt, and a little caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: This was one of the beers I was excited about trying when we finally started getting Founders in my area. It doesn't disappoint. Everything you want from a wet hop beer.
