Received a bottle of this as a volunteer for a local brewfest. I had tried other Founders beers in the past and found them all to be outstanding. This was no exception!

The first thing you notice when you pour this beer is the it looks exactly like old engine oil. Dark, thick and slow pouring. The next thing I noticed was the extremely dark head, probably the darkest head I head ever seen on a beer. When the glass was empty, you knew it had to be rinsed out.

The initial taste was smokey roasted malt with hints of coffee and chocolate. The aroma was mostly chocolate and malt with a hint of hops.

This beer was very well balanced between sweet and bitter with a heavy, creamy mouthfeel.

For an Imperial Stout, this beer was suprisingly good.

Black with a dense, single finger dark brown head.

Roasted malts make for a robust, semi nutty profile. No vanilla notes, alochol's not hidden and is a bit of a bother and doesn't give off dark fruit. Missing sweetness but does have an earthy, smokey, coffee base.

Thick and too sharp for my liking.

12oz bottle in to snifter from awesome bottle shop where Founders gets no distribution.

A: Not often that the appearance of an imperial stout surprises me. This thing is BLACK black. Dark mocha head that settles to a ring. Looks mean.

S: Boom. Dark chocolate, coffee, malt, vanilla, milk chocolate, alcohol. Reminds me a lot of Ten Fidy.

T: Roasty and not as sweet as the nose implied. Follows the nose with a bitter, roasty, medium length finish. Did become a little more sweet as it warmed.

M: Super thick, super syrupy, a little hot but pretty much spot on. This is a big, fat, bellywarmer of a beer.

O: I see why this is a hyped seasonal beer. For me this is directly in competition with Ten Fidy and I would definitely buy it again. Well done, Founders.
