Black . . . Black . . . Black. Smells insanely delicious. As should be expected from any Founders stout. Typical roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, vanilla . . . but this one seems to hold a candle to other RIS's. This is one terrific RIS ! So tasty. Better than most. Why did I pass this one by for so long ? Oh, now I remember . . . A little pricey. But now that I've had it it is head and shoulders above ( now listen ) other good to great RIS.

A - Really good looking beer, super dark with a dark tan head that stays a while

S - Way too smokey for my tastes, but redeemed with complex chocolate and coffee notes. Overall

T - Smoke and chocolate, with a certain richness

M - Creamy darkness, with a lot of the smell in the taste

O - Too smokey for my taste, but certainly a great stout

Edit: Just had another that was considerably colder and I liked it much more, it becomes more viscous and loses a lot of the overpowering smoke. Thick and syrupy with no alcohol coming over in the taste.

A: Black oil coloring, thick and viscose exit from the bottle. Dark khaki head, with a thick foamy consistency that lasted a good while. Golden-khaki beads of carbonation rise to the occasion of moderate pace. Washy sheet lacing.

A: Aroma of burnt nuttiness, burnt chocolate with a touch of nutmeg. Some coffee laced alcohol and a dry woodsy bitterness of generous strength.

T: Flavor was creamy, darkly roasted coffee, burnt chocolate sweetness with some dried vanilla creamer that delivered an earthy roasted bitterness of an acrid degree. Toasted dry nutmeg, dark, moist coffee grounds with a freshly roasted nature of dark fruit and toasted caramel sweetness. Earthy, silty mineral of charred woodiness, smoky, with some hints of fresh tobacco. Very good level of complexity and structure.

M: Mouthful was thick and viscose, oily feel, heavy malted feel, bitter and softly carbonated.

O: Overall a huge burnt roastedness lingering about, big rich chocolate base, coffee wrapped in a 10.5% package that drinks smoothly like a dream.
