Serving: 12oz draft served in a goblet at Holy Grale, Louisville, KY

A: A pure, ruby red that shimmers with highlights; small, pinkish head about a finger deep at its height.

S: Seductive, with tart raspberries balanced by some syrupy sweetness on the nose (imagine muddled raspberries with sugar in the bottom of a cocktail glass); reminiscent of homemade jam; slight vinous character, with the berry hints dancing alongside a musty note- that must be a hint of the wheat character underlying this beer.

T: Tart raspberry starts things off, followed by a rush of sugary sweetness (like a simple syrup); the combination of tart and sweet blends nicely with support from the malt backbone, with hints of caramel and a mild bready flavor; just the faintest suggestion of wheat comes through with a grainy flavor that is quickly swallowed by the lingering tartness of the raspberry carries into the short, crisp finish.

M: Crisp, refreshing flavors; sturdy carbonation is prickly on the tongue and cuts through the slickness to keep the proceedings light.

O: Drinkability is high on the charts, as the lower ABV content makes for a nice, easy drinking fruit beer. Not overly sweet but not puckering with tartness; a nice blend of fruity aroma and flavors with just enough of a malt/wheat presence to create a crisp, refreshing beer for all occasions. For a style of beer that is consistently maligned, Founders has concocted quite the pleasant surprise with this raspberry-infused beer. Would recommend for anyone who enjoys wheat beers or lambics – in my mind this seems to cut a middle ground between the two.
