Style: Old Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Think classic seafaring ports, local pubs and weathered old fishermen. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill. Then Oak-Aged. The result is a rich, malty delight that's deceptively smooth and drinkable.

This is a '14 from a crowler, so ..... might skew things a bit.

Pours clear chestnut-brown, similar to thin, watery coffee, when I forget how many scoops I put in, & come up light. ; ) Quickly-dissipating off-white head.

Aroma is slightly nutty malt, lightly boozy, & dried fruit, a la brandy.

Flavor is wood, pecan, & dried stone fruits, and (fermented honey - like a mead) finishing with slight pleasant astringency & bitterness.

Light, moderately oily, with very fine carbonation. Overall quite smooth.

Overall, this aged version is an (dangerously ; ) )easy-drinking, wonderful sipper, that I can't get enough of.

Ruby amber, finger and a half head of fine, wee bubbles. Bubble streams are slow to medium. Elite lacing.

Mighty Malty scent. Toffee-Caramel tinged with Oak aged vanilla.

Taste follows the nose. Creamy, well hidden booze.

Delicious, quite strong and yet understated.

Poured from draft into a tall tulip glass at a local tavern. Beautiful clear mahogany with a nice beige head and great lacing. Nice woodsy, boozey smell that follow into the taste. The flavor of vanilla, toffee and a bit of candied orange. Nice oak notes as well. Very enjoyable!

I love this beer. I've had it many times before, but today I poured a bottle that had been sitting around for a year or so...and it is so incredibly smooth. Similar to a barleywine, but more refined. I wish I had more that I had left alone.

Merky amber with small fluffy off white head.
The aroma is fruity yeast, tons of apricot, molasses and a Carmel burnt brown sugar toffee and bread crust.
The flavor is sweet, there's a full malt flavor that is largely toffee and bread crust. There's this mild oakiness and a bitter dry finish.
It's full bodied and about perfect for the style.
Overall it's solid nothing spectacular, but I love old ales and this one is very enjoyable.

Aged 7 months in cellar.

Poured into a standard shaker pint glass at around 45 degrees F. Beautiful dark copper / caramel color. Even with a VERY slow pour, it leaves almost 1.5 inches of cream colored head with a good amount of lacing.

The nose gives malt, light oak and a hint of vanilla. Taste reveals sweet malt / almost brown sugar, following the nose, a hint of vanilla, caramel, light toffee with just enough bitterness on the back end to keep it from becoming cloying. Nose and taste are almost - not quite, but almost reminiscent of bourbon.

Mouth feel is lightly creamy and the malt really coats the tongue.

I had this back in January and wasn't nearly as impressed. Not sure if my tastes matured, or the beer did. Either way, 7 months did it a world of good for me. My first review here. Hope it came out ok.

Another new Founders sip for me and I think the first ''old ale'' I am trying.

Poured this 12oz bottle into a mug, the ethanol make it a bit harder to sip on it than others from Founders. I like it, just having a hard time finishing it.

A peculiar style that may not be for every palate.
