Brewed by:
Founders Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: Old Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Think classic seafaring ports, local pubs and weathered old fishermen. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill. Then Oak-Aged. The result is a rich, malty delight that's deceptively smooth and drinkable.

Original straight 4 from one year ago, re-reviewed 5/2015, bottle:
The beer pours with a nice clarity, even though the color is a deep Amber-orange that blocks a fair amount of light. Head pours white, and leaves a wisp of bubbles on the surface in addition to the decent ring along the edge of the glass.
Nose is candy sugar sweetness combined with tart dark fruit. Plum, rum raisin, maybe a hint of orange; there's a hint of root spice, also. Sweetness is like a dark rock candy.

Taste is a bit darker overall than the look and smell. The bitter notes come out much more than expected from the nose. There is a light sweetness to open, but almost immediately countered by a green-wood-iness that seems to come out of nowhere. The sweetness in the taste seems a bit more molasses in nature than candy, and the fruit notes tend a bit darker, still some plum, but fig a bit more. Feel is medium-full, flavors are strong, carbonation is kind of light, alcohol is perceptible.

This is a sipper for me, and I think a little too bitter for me for the style. Maybe I need to try aging one a year to see if it works better for me.

Copper with red-orange highlights. Not quite two fingers worth of foam, while lacing is there but spotty. Malt-forward aroma with pretty good oak character. There's not the big, bold oak and vanilla you get from a Bourbon barrel aged Old Ale, but a woody, oaky character is present. Some cherry and vanilla notes.

Strong, but not boozy; sweet, but still quite balanced. Oak is noticeable on the finish. Mouthfeel is soft without being thin or flat. Very tame carbonation. Toffee, maybe some butterscotch going on. While there's not a lot of flavor complexity, the balance is spot on and the oak-aging shows very well.

A typically strong showing from Founders. Definitely worth a try.
