Best Old Ale if you like them sweet and thick.

A: One finger off white head on a slightly hazed mahogany body.

S: Big toasted malts, toffee, sweet/fruit breads, molasses and dark fruit, fig.

T: Sweeter than expected, toffee, caramel and brown sugars, malt dominant. Nice. Spicy ending.

M: Creamy, smooth heavier body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Big Old Ale. Nice work.

Bottled 1/14/15. "Cellared" in a dark room temp area and drank 7/19 /16. Really smooth with warm alcohol burn but an enjoyable one. The 50 IBU bitterness has softened. Really great and glad I have another in storage

This is a rich, full bodied ale with hearty flavors and a very strong finish. The high alcohol content does show through somewhat, but I found this to be a very satisfying end-of-the-day beer.

Clear ruby-copper body, thick and rich looking, with a light tan head that fades to nothing. Nose is rich and buttery, molasses and caramel add a mild sweetness. Taste is buttery and warming, notes of molasses, caramel, toasted bread, toasted wood, toasted marshmallow, a touch of vanilla and bourbon/cognac. Leans sweet, but has overpowering warmth to steer it in a better direction. Body is rich, full, heavy, mouth-coating.
Quite a yummy specimen here. The sweetness is mitigated by heavier, warming flavors, and quite a good variety of them at that. Reminiscent of a quad or a barleywine. This wonderful brew did the opposite of its name and reversed my curmudgeonly attitude about old ales.

L: amber colored beer with a half finger of white head that leaves a nice film and little lacing as you drink
S: vanilla oak aromas with the irony molasses characteristic
T: vanilla, oak, irony molasses, and faint hops, appropriate alcohol presence, dark fruit.... good stuff
F: Nice and smooth, not under-carbonated or anything but creamy and easy going
O: Delicious. Love the label love the name love the beer. Really straight forward like a true curmudgeon should be.

Bottle dated 1/4/16 poured into a Nonic pint. The color was a beautiful red/Amber with about 1 finger of well retained head and good lacing. The nose was permeated with a nice blend of malt and molasses both of which were prevalent on the palate. As I noted in many of my reviews I'm not a big fan of very hop forward/bitter beers. To me this achieved a very nice level of hopiness without being overly assertive while at the same time in had a nice blend of sweetness from the malt that created a wonderful balance. A definite winner in my book.

Bought it almost on a whim, pricey for a single bottle.

Poured into a beer glass, pours darkish brown, caramel color. No foamy head, thin foam sits on the head.

Smell from the bottle didn't indicate much, other than alcohol. Neither much does it from the glass, smells almost fruity if I drink it through my nose.

Taste is interesting, almost complex. Heavy roasted malt flavor, similar to a scotch ale, with some chocolate notes. A bit of an alcohol taste to it with some bitterness aftertaste.

Feels bold, full, and has a bite to it, not for those who dislike the alcohol taste or feel.

Overall, pricey, but okay, pleasantly complex but not to my taste. At least the label is nice.

Large flavor but smooth, blended. Though distinct, flavors seem to meet each other with smoothed borders. No doubt from barrel aging. Watch out! After one, you may need more of these!

A: [4.50] Gorgeous brown to burgundy color. The beer has 1 finger of off white head. The head is thick and creamy with nice retention. The bottle lists the ABV (9.8%) and has a born on date (01/04/16).

S: [4.25] Leather, dark brown bread, dark caramel and peat.

T: [4.00] Follows the nose. Really nice dark brown bread flavor followed by peat and earthiness. Spiced rum. Underneath something reminiscent of root beer hard candies (a sweet herbal tone).

M: [4.25] Slick and thick. Nice body and heft. Has elevated alcohol that can be felt as a little heat on the finish.

O: [4.25] This beer is hitting on all cylinders. Pretty in the glass. Complex nose with inviting scents. The flavor is rich and complex. The mouthfeel is really nice and the alcohol heat does not detract from it. I want to share this beer with friends.

When poured into a glass the color was amber with an orange hue, with very little tan foam. The smell had a sweet roasted malty aroma, with a hint of oak and coriander? The taste had a sweet/tart finish of sweet malts, with a candy finish. Overall, sweet, tart and a very good and lingering aftertaste.

L- The beer pours reddish brown which appears more red when light is shown through it. The head is a fluffy 3 fingers of off white foam.
S-The nose if full of molasses and plum.
T- The first thing noted is the molasses and faint vanilla sweetness. The dark fruit sweetness takes over and the beer finishes with a touch of drying hop bitterness and alcohol warmth.
F-Carbonation is light despite the towering head on the initial pour. The overall mouthfeel is medium.
O- This is a fine old ale. One that I would drink over and over. Highly recommended.

Bottle dated 01/04/16 into a tulip glass. Pours a copper amber with two fingers of variable density white head that left nice lacing. Nose is sweet, definitely hints of molasses. Taste reminds me of a Wee Heavy, definitely wanted more barrel character. Mouthfeel is good, very easy drinking, carbonation fine, and the finish slightly sweet and lingers. Not sure what to make of this one. Its good, but left me wanting much more barrel influence.

Pours a copper color with a touch of red, bottle conditioned as plenty of little floaters around. Khaki colored small head falls fast but does leave some spotty lace.

Aroma malty goodness, dark fruity notes, molasses and spice. Some earthy like notes slight alcohol twang and seems like touches of cinnamon. The oak aged just come off as vanilla more then woody even though it probably adds to the dryness.

Taste is like the nose but bigger lots of malt, sugary molasses, dark fruits adding to the sweetness. Earthy and vanilla with touches of alcohol, oak and some hops come out to make sure it doesn't move to cloying. Nice pretty spot on for an old ale made for sipping goodness. A malty good treat with just enough hops to keep it from being cloying.

Mouthfeel is kind of light for big beer say medium or maybe a touch more. Carbonation is fairly mellow also.

Overall an nice old ale little more fruity and spicy then most, also little less hop kick. But overall an enjoyable treat.

A; opaque; an orangish bronze; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a thin collar; little lacing;

S: vanilla, alcohol, molasses, sweet malt;

T: molasses and oak up front; dark fruit in the middle; finish is very mildly bitter; alcohol is warming at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: considering the 9.8% ABV, this is pretty smooth;

L = Nice dark amber with a large light beige head.
S = Subdued sweet malt smell.
T = Light malt and bitterness on the end. Not too terribly interesting, but not bad tasting.
F = Light carbonation.
O = I thought there would be a little more to this one, but still not bad a bad drink.

Pours a nice copper red amber with a creamy khaki colored head. Smells like malty molasses, oak, mild spice, dried fruit, hint of vanilla, biscuit, caramel, toffee, with mild pine and earthy grass. Tastes like smooth malty molasses, caramel, toffee, biscuit, vanilla, dried fruit medley, with earthy pine and dank grass. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really tasty oak aged molasses old ale.

Look- Somewhat opaque dark amber, little to no head
Smell- Malt. Malt. Malt. Maybe a hint of rye.
Taste- Oak, maple syrup, molasses, honey, toffee, malt
Feel- Slick, oily almost sticky
Overall- A strong beer for strong men (and women!). Drinking this makes me feel like a lumberjack slurping maple syrup right out of a tap in the tree. A bit sweet for my tastes, but it won't be a struggle to get through the rest of the 4 pack.

Pours a nice reddish orange color with a thick puffy tan head. Incredible sticky lacing. Thick mouthfeel and boozy, no hiding the alcohol in this one.

Using the Begnel formula, the Alcohol Score is 12 oz. x 9.8% = 117.6, or 2.3 Bud Lights.

Dark reddish in color, ample light tan head. Retention and lacing are excellent. The aroma is very pleasant. Sweet malts, caramel, molasses, dark fruits, slight alcohol. Taste is similar and complex. Molasses, dark fruit, sweet malt. The oak comes out a bit in flavor as well. Slight hop flavor and bitterness. The body is medium-full, low-moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter and alcohol is present on the swell. Really excellent.

Flavor and mouthfeel are fine on the way down...then the bourbon flavor wrecks the whole deal. Bourbon aroma is not enjoyable. High alcohol is fairly well hidden.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

I had this a couple of years back and felt the urge to revisit with it being in New Mexico.

Flavor and aroma treat me to raisiny, dried fruit and light flora notes. Very consistent from nose to tongue. Funny that this has molasses added because I think more of maple. Either way, there's a sticky, dry sweet flavor there.

There's a pretty potent hop profile on the finish that takes things grassy and herbal. Age would probably tone that down and serve this beer well.

This beer feels like something I need about six ounces of maximum.

APPEARANCE: It's a fairly clear red/ruby. About a half finger of khaki, soapy head that settles down to a ring after a few minutes. Great carbonation when I rock the glass. Leaves spotty lacing down the glass.
AROMA: Smells quite sweet. A little alcohol note. Big molasses, cherries, leather, candied sugar, fruitcake- nice big bready qualities. And a tea like note, which might account for the oak.
TASTE: Sweet up front. That big molasses and fruitcake kick in right off the bat. Leaves a pleasant mild bitterness on the finish. Yup, tastes like a booze soaked fruitcake, with a molasses glaze.
FEEL: Syrupy, sticky, full body, dries on finish. Medium carbonation, not flat at all.
OVERALL: A nice big sipper, full bodied and quite tasty.

Leather tobacco pouch, canvas rope, rusty anchor...says the label. Not far from reality, though - aroma and taste of molasses, roasted malt, caramel, tobacco and tea. Deep, rich taste that ends with a bit of alcohol heat. Big beer with an excellent, robust flavor profile with a taste of oak and spice. Complex and delicious.

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours deep copper amber with a creamy tan head that settles to a light layer and leaves some very nice lacing.

S: Deep sweet fruity notes, hints of berry, dark sugars, subtle spice, and a little oak.

T: Sticky, fruity, dried cherry, plum, blackberry, fig, golden raisin, peach, nice oak presence, honey, toffee, burnt sugar, a bit earthy, mild spice, hints of licorice and vanilla, and slightly toasty bready malt.

M: Full body, moderate carbonation, smooth with a pleasant mild warmth.

O: I don't have a lot of experience with this style, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Now I have to track down some bottles.
