Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
We took a crisp, light-bodied cherry ale and hid it away in oak barrels that have held both bourbon and maple syrup. After a lengthy stint, it emerged a changed beer, blanketed in notes of warm vanilla and earthy sweetness. The wood proves itself the star of this beer, adding depth and taming the tart cherry while the maple imposes a velvety texture that lingers for not a moment too long.

This beer pours a lighter red than expected, but with a moderately frothy head. Lacing is prominent.

Even though my nose is almost swollen shut due to sinusitis, I can still smell the wonderful array of fruit and barrel characters in this beer. There's definitely some cherry and raspberry, and even in the nose is woodiness. I can't imagine what this would smell like if could fully smell!

This beer tastes even better than it smells. It looks as though it'd have a thin mouth, but no - it's thick and full of fruity bursting cherry and raspberry. And the best part is the presence of woodiness and maple from the barrel that plays so nicely with the fruity notes. Yum!

This is a must-have for fruit beer lovers, and one of my favorites from the barrel-aged series from Founders.

I poured the beer into a glass. It's a reddish color, transparent. There's a bit of a white head. I can smell the beer. A wonderful smell of cherries. The beer's taste is a bit heavy on the bourbon barrel/maple syrup side, though I can pick up some cherry flavor.

Bottled
Drank: 05.12.17
L: A white/strawberry head with low retention. The body has a cinnamon apple color with light carbonation and zero clarity.
S: Subtle, woody, malty, light bourbon, cherry with a biting sweetness.
T: Bourbon (But without the alcoholic burn! I was incredibly surprised!), cherry, slight wood/earthy tones with a maple finish.
F: AMAZINGLY smooth, bready/malty, medium fullness, rich, sweet, medium fullness, and esters with a warm finish.
A beautifully aged beer. Subtle, but delightfully smooth and enjoyable. I will most definitely be drinking this beer again!

I THought this was a phenomenal beer. Sweet cherries, vanilla, maple syrup, complex oakiness, and other sweet and tart fruit flavors present as well. Not an overwhelming alcohol presence that you sometimes find with young barrel aged beers; superb mouthfeel. Just delicious!

12 oz. bottled on 01/10/17

Pours clear copper red amber with a creamy white foam head. Smells like tart cherries, oak, vanilla, bourbon, maple, toasty bready malt, some chocolate, spice, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like fresh tart cherries, vanilla, oak, smooth bourbon, maple, toasty bready malt, chocolate, spice, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a really great maple syrup bourbon barrel aged cherry ale.

look: clear light blush red. Sparse slightly pink head that leaves smatterings of lingering lace.
smell: subtle cherry and vanilla, oak, and maple emerge as it warms a bit.
taste: absolutely perfect for what it is. Wonderful blend of cherry balanced with vanilla, oak, an maple. Sweet but balanced by the other flavors. So quaffable i have to muster all my discipline to slowly savor all that's happening.
overall: seems most believe the Backstage arc declined sharply after '11 Blushing Monk and CBS. I for one believe it's been mostly home runs or at worst a double or triple. Fantastic creation imo.

Serving: 750mL bottle poured into a Founder's tap room snifter. Bottled on 1/5/17, making this just under 3 months old at this point.

A: Pours a medium body, pink-red hue to a nice and clear beer. Big, thick white head. Very pretty.

S: Definitely bright cherry up front and a good amount of bourbon. Not a ton of maple present, but it's noticeable.

T: Pretty sweet up front, big cherry and maple notes. Middle of the mouth is fantastic as you get a big burst of tartness from the cherry and some sweetness from the bourbon. Finish is clean and most of the maple is here.

M: Medium body, great carbonation. Definitely not too boozy. Good amount of sweetness, not overkill at all.

O: I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Founder's has been on a bit of a dull streak with their backstage series. Koz was pretty good, but had it's flaws. Sticking with the fruity-sweet theme (rather abundant in the Backstage Series), they go with essentially a "maple-BA Cerise". Based on accomplishing what they tried to do with this, I'd say great success. They perfectly incorporated the sweet cherry ale with the even sweeter maple bourbon barrels and they came together nicely. I think the main reason is the tartness from the cherry was still able to come through a bit to balance the sweetness of the barrels. This one is super tasty and drinkable. Not an all-time classic, but a great first entry in this Barrel-Aged Series.

Recommendation: Another must-try barrel-aged beer from Founder's.

I am really up on this beer. I dont like fruit beers, though I am a HUGE fan of Founders Bourbon Barrel series. This is an outstanding beer. I drink my bourbon barrels non-chilled, though after 2 of these, its clear they are going down chilled next time. The tart cherries jump to the front, followed by notes of maple and bourbon. The pour is nice, great carbonation and color - light amber. Really enjoying this one, a light-weight bourbon barrel release. Grab one if you see it -

From a snifter at Founders Taproom, Grand Rapids -3/23/17
Look- Light red hue with thin white head
Smell- Prominent cherry with a light smoky quality
Taste-Bright, tart cherry at outset, secondary smoky/bourbon notes on back end
Feel- Not overwhelmingly syrupy, but sticky enough to notice.

Overall: Very interesting brew, one of my favorite styles done in a way that enhanced the overall quality without pulling it too far away from the norm. Would seek out again.

I am amazed that people seriously have the audacity to come on here and hate on this beer. It is a winner on every aspect. I will rate this beer like i would any other, with a ton of openness like any true craft beer enthusiast should practice if they want to educate the lesser half of people who actually read what we put and make purchases based off of our opinion, not our bias.

Frootwood is a complex flavor combination with some really creative things going on. The base is a cherry ale which is not a huge piercing sword on the flavor profile. Maple is not as pungent as the common eye may perceive it to be, however it is present. It pours with minimal viscosity or lacing but foams up nice with about a fingers worth of head. The nose has bourbon, however you will experience the true profile of that in the aftertaste. It has warm vanilla notes hidden within the carbonation department that will make any wanderer in this community happy. I will note that there is a lot going on with this beer and you really have to take your time drinking it to be able to pinpoint where the flavor profiles are present, but the overall mouth feel is amazing.

Appreciate the creativity that Founders has solidified in the barrel aging techniques. You may never get the opportunity to taste this one again, as Founders is always working on the next big thing.

I'm not going to directly score this beer in categories as it is on a level of its own in the flavor complex, but it is very good and you would be a fool to walk past it in your local shop.

Thanks for reading!

Very impressive beer. Pours a clear reddish-brown. Light carbonation. Maple and cherry briefly introduce themselves before surreptitiously departing and allowing a pleasant besiegement of oak to transpire.
