Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
We took a crisp, light-bodied cherry ale and hid it away in oak barrels that have held both bourbon and maple syrup. After a lengthy stint, it emerged a changed beer, blanketed in notes of warm vanilla and earthy sweetness. The wood proves itself the star of this beer, adding depth and taming the tart cherry while the maple imposes a velvety texture that lingers for not a moment too long.

Pours a cloudy light ruby color with pinkish colored head. Smells like cough syrup. Just off-putting from the start. Not sure I got a bad bottle or what is up with this. Tastes like overly sweet cough syrup with a shalack finish. Not good at all. This was terrible.

DO NOT BUY!!!

Brutal! This is clearly an example of corporate brewing...

Artificial taste that is contingent on the false notion that barrel aging this brew will make it taste authentic... this taste like mediocre cough syrup!!!

DO NOT BUY!!!

BOTTLE shared with Schlimenhaumer. $5 at a Whole Paycheck in Manhattan.

AROMA: A scintilla of cherry. Syrupy aromatics but no overt maple. Alcohol warmth. No bourbon, really. No vanilla or rich white oak.

It seems the base beer used was a bit too thin and lacked the body and boldness to withstand barrel aging.

A kiss of tartness.

Leaves boozy brandy-like legs when the glass is tilted.

Not a great aroma.

TASTE/TEXTURE: Syrupy as hell and full-bodied. A bit tart. Some cherry...at least it's not medicinal.

No evocative maple or expressive bourbon barrel.

Not balanced. Worse for having been barrel-aged.

The base just can't handle the onslaught of the barrel.

Texture is weirdly thin yet also syrupy - the base beer's lightness destroyed by the syrup.

Hat tip to Beerchitect for finding vanilla cream soda in this...once I read that I knew he'd identified what I couldn't.

OVERALL: Warm and tough to drink, with shallow flavours and no expressiveness from any of them. The light thin ale they chose to put in barrels wasn't up to the task, and it offers little in terms of cherry, maple, or bourbon. A rare miss from a brewery usually excellent at barrel aging. I wanted to love this, but it's not what one expects from the brewery behind CBS and KBS. Drinks way boozier than 8% ABV. Definitely wouldn't buy again.

purchased a 4 pack a day after release. Funny story the Guy at the store I purchased it from said he wasn't sure there was any left, and then found my 4 pack 3 packs deep of two hearted, so I'm assuming someone was stashing my 4 pack for later. Anywho, down to business.
A: The color is clean and a beautiful pale red, almost orange. Nose gave mostly bourbon/wood in the glass.

S: first nose after opening this beer, was this amazing cherry soda/slight bourbon nose. I was hooked. I let the beer sit in bottle for a few minutes while i found glassware. the pour was great, lots of foam, that settled quickly, nothing lingering other than what clings to the edges.

T: Taste was where this beer changed my mind on the experience.
This beer looks amazing and doesn't taste so.
Lots of wood flavor, oak oak oak on the mouth. Slightly acidic(yay) and the finish reminds me of specifically a warm PBR. Little bourbon flavor overpowering the malty unenjoyable finish that i just can't get rid of.

M: clean mouth feel, slightly syrupy texture on further reflection

O: I'll let these sit a year and try one again, but I probably will not purchase again. I can see what they were going for, but it's not my jam.

Received as an extra in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a crystal clear strawberry hue with a thin one finger white head that fades to leave thin wisps and a light halo.

S - Aromas of stale old cherry juice, sticky sweet syrup, light maple, light vanilla. Very vegetative with loads of green bell pepper.

T - Taste is loads of sweet cherry juice, oaky vanilla, faint faint maple. Some decent bourbon flavour and burn. Finish is very bready and yeasty.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly crisp, alcohol hidden well. The cherry and maple though gives the illusion of a sticky syrupy finish though that is rather unpleasant.

O - Overall, on paper this looked like a a pretty nice idea. Cherries, bourbon, oak, maple syrup. What comes out though is not the sum of it's parts though. Really, really unfortunate.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a J. Wakefield OG teku glass.

A: Fairly clear and gold-tinted red. Forms a thin pink head that fades quickly to a ring of foam. A good amount of visible carbonation.

S: Cherries up front - fresh, and cherry juice cocktail, and just a bit of cough syrup. Some sweet fruity yeast esters and a candied aspect that I’m guessing is the maple syrup, but isn’t overtly maple-y. Some husky pale malts. Mild oaky tannins with just a bit of vanilla. Not any significant bourbon on the nose. Fine, not particularly appealing to me.

T: Cherries again - mildy tart pie filling, cherry juice cocktail and more cough medicine than the nose. The bourbon that I was missing on the nose is present here, but unfortunately just serves to accentuate the medicinal cherry flavors. Candied maraschino cherries in a light bourbon. Some grainy pale malts again. Light woody tannins, but the dryness that these would normally offer is drowned out by the sweet flavors. Incidentally, still not getting any maple flavor – just quite sweet. The sweet and lightly tart cherries last through the hang with a bit of that candied-cherry as well.

M: Body is towards the light end. The alcohol seems at least integrated but it's pretty obvious, especially for such a conservative ABV. Fairly low carbonation sensation, but not flat.

O: To my tastes, this is really not good. The fruit flavors that tend towards sickly medicinal sweet are only accentuated by bourbon and the sweetness of the maple syrup (though again, I'm not getting the maple flavor). I would have expected the wood to provide some welcome relief, but it’s just not there. I have made it through about half my 12 oz. bottle, but I think that might be about it before it melds with my drain. Not infected or anything, but just a failure of concept. I think they tried to do this with the wrong beer – it accentuated everything about a mildly tart cherry beer that I don’t want accentuated. Really not enjoyable.

Definitely pass on this one. Founders has been super disappointing lately. All of their most recent flavored beers, all taste so artificial. Hint of cherry/robotussin flavor with no bourbon or maple characteristics, all I get out of this is the oak. Its sad to see this many people gave it a high review, I feel like just because it says "Founders" on the label, people gave it a good score. Subjectivity only goes so far. Definitely do yourself a favor and pass on this one.
