The beer smacks of raspberries up front. Juicy, jammy, and fresh. Then onto a spicy Belgian base and some alcohol. The beer lacks tart quality as with other beers in the style, but the fruit quality is exceptional.

A huge improvement on Rubaeus.

A: Pours an almost opaque yet still clear deep garnet red in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and faint pink highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense foamy pink head that slowly reduces to a thick layer covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Strong aromas of raspberries over the top of lighter aromas of pale malts and a very light amount of spicy Belgian yeast.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of pale malts which is quickly overtaken by strong flavors of slightly tart raspberries. There is a light to moderate amount of sweetness and a light amount of spicy Belgian yeast. Hints of alcohol towards the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Alcohol is pretty well hidden and the beer is quite enjoyable though it might pair better with a chocolate dessert vs. a main course.

750ml bottle, 2015 release, poured into a Founders Doom stemmed glass.

The beer pours a deep blood red, garnet and ruby hues, hazy but with light clarity and a thick finger or so of pinkish head, nice retention and webbed lace. The aroma is pleasant, strong raspberry preserve, jammy, seedy, sweet, fresh, light funk, definitely some underlying base beer, spice and pale grain. The flavors echo the nose, huge showing of raspberry, sweet and thick, almost syrupy, not quite cloying, but definitely strong and a little overwhelming, minimal base beer, just a hint of peppercorn and musty grain, light booziness. The mouthfeel is good, thick, full bodied, coating, moderate carbonation, very gentle and smooth, lightly dry at the finish.

Verdict: A nice fruit beer from Founders, imperial rubaeus wouldn't be out of the question, a bit sweet and syrupy, heavy and very one dimensional, just plain raspberry juice. The booze starts to come through a bit which adds to the harshness, but at the end of the day, this is refreshing and enjoyable, great for an afternoon session.
