Brewed by:
Founders Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: Leipzig Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

Green Zebra was initially released as our Artist Series beer in 2017.

This is the second season for me with this beer. Had it last year and was a companion in our camper through the later Spring and into summer. Poured 40 degrees into a Pilsner glass. Clean, light honey color, whiteish head that stayed around for a bit. No detectable alcohol taste. Smell of fruit, with a slight sour under tone. Nice clean finish. Looks like it will be with us this year again.

Salty sweet mildly watermelon. Light and crisp with a salty finish. Another quality gose, easy drinking, not hard to find at all when it was in season.

Almost clear light orange color with a bit of foam. Aroma is fruity and mineral with some red apple notes. Taste has a nice fermented red apple sweetness, a bit tart and briney too. Medium body with medium plus carbonation. Doesn't really taste like watermelon but overall it's a nice gose.

Appearance: Cloudy amber, with a nice pearly white head and a trail of lace.

Aroma: Tart watermelon. Salty.

Taste: More tart, with a detectable watermelon coming through prominently, as does the sea salt later on the palate. Pretty tasty and refreshing on a hot day.

Honey gold and slightly hazy, with lots of carbonation. Topped with a finger of white head.
Smells of coriander, lemon, malts, slightly cellar like. Also a slightly fruity. There’s a hint of roses.

The taste is a balance of sweet and sour. You can taste the watermelon as well as an acidic lemon sour quality. It’s fruity and floral with a hint of brine.

It has a medium body with a medium carbonation. Slightly puckering finish.

I got this in Pentaluma California week ago. Drinking in Redding California September 9, 2018. Really good gose.

Very tasty. A touch too sour for my tastes, but a quality product.

Tastes like candied watermelon, little tart, and a little salt. One of the better watermelon beers I have had, but bordering on the line of being almost too sweet. More like a malt beverage than a beer. Could use just a minor touch more salt, as it is pretty muted. I think with those two things, dialing back the sweet and adding a pinch more salt, would make this about perfect. Good stuff.

Medium bodied beer with a cloudy gold orange color. Aroma is watermelon candy, malt, and a touch of lemon. Taste is watermelon candy, sour and salt as well. Finish is all watermelon.
Despite tasting like watermelon candy it isn't overly sweet or artificial tasting.

Light gold with thin, large-bubbled head and practically no lacing. Smells like artificial sour green apple and artificial watermelon, like a candy. The candy is still present in the taste, leaning a bit more towards the watermelon side. There's very little in the realm of "beer" flavors: malt, hops. It really tastes (and looks) more like a cider. In fact, if I didn't know better, I would have thought it is a cider. This cider...I mean beer...has a smooth body, lots of tartness, quite a lot of sweetness (it makes a moderate-to-dry cider but a sweet beer), a dry finish, and a very strong bite from carbonation.

Amber in color with a white head. Retention and head is absent.
Smells a little sweet smells a little funky. Getting a little banana with some grains in the back. Also some burnt rubber.
Watermelon smacks your palate. Its almost punch sweet. Still it has that sourness and also the salt it claims.
Mouthfeel is light bodied with carbonation a little on the high side.

A once in a while type beer for me. I might buy it again on a hot day or for a bbq.

Cloyingly sweet, cidery, and weird. It does have a distinct watermelon flavor, but it is more jolly rancher than actual fruit character. Not something I would drink again.

Personally i love this beer more than i should. Had it on tap from the founders guys at a brew festival. Bought two sixers as soon as i found them and I drank about three a sitting with them and i never session beers like this. So tasty, perfectly sour and slightly salty with a sweet puckering nose. Goddamn most of these boys never left the can.

Not really my cup of tea - tried this one on tap at Founders Brewery. Pale yellow color, a little head without any lacing. Smells of watermelon candy - like a Jolly Rancher. Tastes of watery watermelon, salt, a little grain. Tart and too sweet at the same time, and just too much saltiness for my licking. Thin mouthfeel, decent carbonation. Admittedly I’m not into this beer style.

On tap at Oscar's Pub. Sour. Yes, I know that's the style; and I'm writing a review based on the style, not on my personal opinion of the style. But this one was tart--mouth puckering, head turning-ly, "wow!" sour. That said, it was a fun addition to the bartender's choice sample flight. If you're a gose fan (and I, admittedly, am not), definitely worth trying.

virtually no head strong smell of candy watermelon. salt starts out light at first and fortunately increases as the beer warms. by the end salt dominates with a light candy taste. this beer starts out aweful and improves to fair at the finish. not likely to purchase again any time soon.

Per my girlfriend, this beer tastes "juicy" in a good way. Nice golden color. Can actually smell the watermelon. This gose is very sweet with a nice watermelon flavor. The sea salt balances out this beer very well. I would rate this as a "drinkable" beer meaning I could drink many.

Umm, hell, I don’t know. It ain’t super model good looking in the morning, but it’s like the hostess that Raul took home from PF Chang’s that one night - not bad. Smell is fairly vibrant like a Death Valley super bloom - very potent watermelon. Taste, well, I don’t think there is an inbetween - you’re either going to like it or not. The oh so familiar salty, tart Gose is there, but the sweetness from the watermelon is huge... a bit overkill for the Raul man. Like said hostess from PF Chang’s it’s very clean, extremely clean, but it’s just not for Raul.

This Gose starts off with a really sour hit but after the first two sips the watermelon and the sweet start to be more evident. The sweet finish and the watermelon base make this one of my favorite Goses. Updating this beer and raising my rating. Really good

Canned on 4/30/18

Pours a deep golden yellow with a short white head that leaves no lacing.

Smells of watermelon candy and crisp malt; some notes of sweet cream, too, which only add to the unique marriage of sweet and savory notes here.

As promised, plenty of lightly salted and juicy watermelon. Reminds me in a way of watermelon Pop Rocks; in spite of its sweeter tones, there's a slightly funky, tart underbelly to this one, as well.

Mouthfeel is clean with very mild carbonation and just a bit sticky.

Really refreshing warm-weather beer. Reminds of a Jolly Rancher, with the tartness providing a balancing factor that prevents the beer from becoming too sweet. Overall, a well-done fruited gose with a milder tartness that struck my palate especially nicely.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow with a one inch white head that left no lacing, lots of lively carbonation. Smells of watermelon and a slightly funky sour component. Tastes of watermelon, watermelon rind, salt and a very mild earthy presence. Medium bodied and carbonated, dry mouth feel and finish.

12oz can into a tall glass. canned 4/18/18, so 5 weeks old.

Almost clear golden yellow body with a big white fluffy head initially leaving great lacing before fizzling away half way through. several small streams of carbonation.

Somewhat of a "clean" aroma. slightly sweet, not detecting anything else.

Initial burst of watermelon on tasting, followed by the sea salt wash.

Mouth is medium, finish is sweet and salty.

Overall, and I admit to being no big fan of the Gose style, or watermelons, this was a pretty enjoyable drink over the warm holiday weekend. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the ones I pretty much slammed more that the sippers.

Pours a slightly hazy lemon hay color with a very large stark white head, creamy, 3 fingers tall. Leaves lots of lace as it recedes.

Aromas of hay, watermelon, watermelon candy, crisp pilsner malt.

Flavor is way, way, way sweeter than I had expected. Watermelon candy all over the place, followed by green pixie stix, salt, hay, pickle juice, and wheat cracker.

Feel is crisp, somewhat syrupy (not surprising), and slightly tart. The salinity can also be felt on the palate.

Overall, I think this would go over FANTASTIC on a hot day, but any other time, it would lean more towards Smirnoff or Seagram's for being such a sweet beverage. In the mood for a wine cooler? Look no further.

Light gold on color with light filmy head. Aroma is cool and has touches of fresh melon. Taste is like Watermelon Jolly Ranchers sprinkled with light salt. It is very refreshing and the watermelon candy is the main player throughout. Crisp and clean on the finish with a light tingly mouth feel.

Luscious watermelon is the focus of this ludicrously refreshing gose, complementing the sharp salt and subtle coriander wonderfully.

Sticky yet approachable and never too candy-like. The watermelon feels authentic; this is the opposite of those syrupy watermelon extract-based beers you usually get whenever a beer is advertised as being brewed with watermelon.

One of the better fruited gosenbiere I've tried; this is up there with Anderson Valley's expressions of the style and bests many traditional German examples. Lovely work from Founders.

Pours a clear yellow/amber with a small, fizzy head and no lacing.

The smell is salty, watermelon, and slightly sour.

The taste is sweet and salty with a thick watermelon flavor.

The mouthfeel is thick and fizzy with a quick finish.

Overall this is a great summer beer. Not too sweet and not too sour with a nice salty kick.
