Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each year we brew a beer to benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition held annually in our hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s beer is Green Zebra. Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow, darker than most Gose beers. Tight finger's worth of white head that falls quickly.

The smell - tartness, salty, watermelon. I actually wish the watermelon were a bit more prominent on the nose.

The taste is straightforward - I get a nice acid bite, sweet watermelon that is a little like candy, and a nice level of salt. Minimal bitterness.

The feel is light, but the sweetness keeps it from being quite as refreshing as I like in a gose.

Overall a good summer beer and en enjoyable change of pace. The mild tartness would be good for somebody who is new to sours - it is enough to notice without peeling your tongue raw. My wife doesn't care for most beers in the gose style, but she likes this beer. The watermelon and salt are a natural combination. Could be less candy-like in the aroma.

I'll admit I was skeptical going into this one: a commercially produced Gose with watermelon. But it won me over on the first sip. Light, a bit sweet, a bit salty, and kissed by just the right amount of (natural-tasting) watermelon juice, it's a delightfully refreshing summer brew. And a fine example of the style.

I tend to be fond of Founders for their malt-forward beers principally, but this one gives me a new appreciation for what they can do, in a completely different arena, on a similarly large scale.

Canned on 7/17/17. Poured into Founders pint glass. It pours a hazy golden color with some orange hues, and a thin, bright white head without much lacing. It really smells like watermelon and you can also smell the sea salt. The aroma is definitely as advertised. The taste is also spot on: first, the salt, then the sweet melon. Thankfully, it's not overly salty, which I don't particularly care for. The melon is sweet without being cloying. It finishes with a nice taste of cracker and malt. The tastes blend well and none of them is overwhelming. It's crisp and light, and easy to drink at only 4.6% ABV. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of the Gose style but Green Zebra is one of the best I've tasted.

Clear yellow colour, aromas of rock salt, light watermelon juice, and fruity nose overall. Tastes mainly like watermelon saltwater taffy, with mild bittering hops to cut some of the sweetness. Light-medium body, tart gose characteristic throughout, hint of lime juice and uzu citrus finish.

Gold in color with excellent clarity. There's a fingernail of off white covering a third of the top. The aroma is of watermelon and sea salt. I'm tasting watermelon and sea salt. The mouth is salinic, thick, and dry.

Don't believe the hype! Man I wish I could give this negative numbers, I am a gose and sour fanatic. But I want that bite, the sour and saltiness that so many gose beers are famous for. This stuff absolutely sucks, little to no salt apparent and the watermelon tastes like a kiddie kool aid. Bought 2-6pks and took back 10 cans to total wine.....100% not my take or liking on this style

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a Founders shaker glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of off white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A sour and sweet aroma with a scent of watermelon and funk. Moderate scent of funk and tartness. Sweet scent of watermelon juice. Hints of white grape and berries. Malt hints of cracker and grains with yeast. Also some hints of sea salt. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a sour and sweet taste with notes of watermelon and funk. Nice taste of funk and sourness. Sweet taste of watermelon juice. Also some fruit notes of white grape and berries. Malt notes of grains and cracker along with yeast. Some notes of sea salt. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Crisp, juicy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty good twist on a Gose. Nice balance of sweetness and sour flavors.

More tart than sour, the watermelon actually came through. It's such a delicate flavor that the beer gets extra credit for doing it right. The watermelon might not be genuine, but it didn't taste like the over-sweetened watermelon flavoring that's out there. Of all the flavored gose's I've had in 2017, this was the best done.

Founders Brewing Co. "Green Zebra"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON: 07.17.17..." and sampled on 08.14.17

Look: Slightly hazy yellow gold body beneath a short head of bright white that drops readily to just a thin collar and leaves little lacing behind.
Smell: Clean. Like citric acid and sugar with some light watermelon including the cut rind. Very much like powdered sour candy.
Taste: Very much as the aroma suggests with a little bit more watermelon flavor, but not much, and some other fruits (orange, lime/lemon, cherry). It's tart but not overdone, and well-balanced against the sweetish malt. Some salt is clear in the finish and stays on your lips. Low level bitterness. Dry, mildly acidic finish with lingering fruitiness.
Feel: Light-medium in body and gently crisp, but still sharp with acidity.
Overall: Surprisingly fruity and interesting, and very nicely balanced - not nearly as sharp and tangy as some gosebiers tend to be. Quite refreshing and exciting. Worth trying.

Strong head production from a turbulent pour; good retention and very nice lacing.

Aroma is nice and tart, with citric notes and only a bit of watermelon sweetness.

Flavor is tart up front, but the watermelon quickly comes in with a nice balanced sweetness. This quickly gives way to a melange of flavors: salty, sour, sweet, fruity. Back third has a candy-like presentation (not unlike a Jolly Rancher). Dull watermelon edge to the finish.

Refreshing, with an oily, slightly puckering finish.

This is a very enjoyable and crushable Summer brew. It strays just a touch too close to candy territory at times, but is otherwise quite nice.

16oz draft pour into a pint glass shows a dull yellow-gold lifeless body floating a slight white cap and leaving spotted lacing with legs.

Aroma and flavor is bright, tart watermelon and flowery without being candy-sweet.
Mouthfeel is a clean lighter leaning medium that doesn't quite coat the tongue yet isn't dry. It falls somewhere in between and it fits perfectly there.
Overall a great pallette cleanser and a great cause.
