Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each year we brew a beer to benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition held annually in our hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s beer is Green Zebra. Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

Don't believe the hype! Man I wish I could give this negative numbers, I am a gose and sour fanatic. But I want that bite, the sour and saltiness that so many gose beers are famous for. This stuff absolutely sucks, little to no salt apparent and the watermelon tastes like a kiddie kool aid. Bought 2-6pks and took back 10 cans to total wine.....100% not my take or liking on this style

On tap at Das Biergarten. Mostly clear without any head. Smells of light acidity and some watermelon candy. Tastes like wheat and a light tartness before watermelon candy kicks in. Jolly Rancher sweetness. Not what I expected and not what I'm looking for. Medium body. Low carbonation. Not impressed.

virtually no head strong smell of candy watermelon. salt starts out light at first and fortunately increases as the beer warms. by the end salt dominates with a light candy taste. this beer starts out aweful and improves to fair at the finish. not likely to purchase again any time soon.

12 ounce can - $2.29 at Schoolhouse Beer and Brewing in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a lightly hazy, yellow-hued body with just at an inch of loose, dissipating white fizz. Active effervescence.

Smell: Watermelon mainly, with some everso slight notes of sourness, a bit of wheat and a hint of citrus.

Taste: Leads with waaay more sugary sweetness than I'd anticipated (or desired), then, in comes some watermelon flavor for a very Jolly Ranchery experience. The salt is obscured as is the underlying malt. Touch of sour apple, again, very much like a Jolly Rancher on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation, quite soda-like.

Overall: Notably sugary and quite soda-esque. It's good to see Founders stepping outside of their comfort zone, their wheelhouse, but, sadly, this one's a sugar-laced dud, finding much more in common with the Seagram's Escapes lineup than the beer aisle.

A: Pours a clear gold with a big, thick, white head with significant retention. Gorgeous.

S: A generic sourness and watermelon. Not much else or nuance.

T: Faint watermelon in the background. Heavy syrup and sweetness. The salt doesn't balance out the sweet. It's too much sweet.

M: Sticky, syrupy.

Cloyingly sweet, cidery, and weird. It does have a distinct watermelon flavor, but it is more jolly rancher than actual fruit character. Not something I would drink again.

Had this at a Nevada football tailgate a few weeks ago. Pours a light yellow color with opaqueness and 1/3" white head. Aroma didn't have much really going for it, the salinity, the watermelon, the wheat, none of it was really there, was just left with a nondescript nothingness in the void. Eat Arby's.

Taste, wow, the watermelon is actually popping here. Watermelon is usually so feint in a beer. Not here. The salinity is still downplayed. The wheat, eh, ok, good choice I guess for watermelon. Problem still is, I'm not a huge watermelon fan. It had the right amount of tart and sourness, no problems there.

Ultimately this did exceed my expectations, but I still would rather have a traditional gose than a fruited one. But hey, they nailed the watermelon and it is plenty affordable and in cans.

Pours a hazy gold color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and poor lacing. Smells of floral notes, grass, candi sugar, slight citrus hops, and watermelon. Fits the style of a Gose. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of watermelon, pale malt, grass, slight candi sugar, hint of yeast, and slight citrus hops. Overall, average appearance for a Gose, watermelon dominates aroma and body, and the blend is sporadic.
