Style: Leipzig Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each year we brew a beer to benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition held annually in our hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s beer is Green Zebra. Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

Pours a hazy gold with a finger and ahalf of a tightly packed head of white that is so crackling and quickly dissipating.

Smell is salty with some watermelon and some breadiness. Very nice on that smell.

Tast is crazy snap of tart sweet watermelon. More sweet than tart up front followed by the tart at the back. Lots and lots of watermelon on the taste.

Mouth is light and nothing on the back end.

If you want a watermelon juice type of beer with a bit of alcohol that you can crush this beer will work!! This stuff is so delicous that Founders should brew this every day of the year. If you are a fan of the style please get some before it is gone. Damn it is good!

Can dated 7/28:
Pours pretty clear for a Gose. Straight golden with a nice fluffy white head. Decent lacing early.

Nose has a wheat note and a generic fruit - more flesh than rind - aspect with a hint of watermelon.

The salinity is noticeable throughout, but gains in the end. The beer isn't too tart, and actually is more of a candy sour than a fruit sour. It's not sweet per se, but im thinking ripe nectarine and apple juice, maybe a sweet tangerine "tartness." Watermelon continues only as an accent, with a decent lingering into the late taste.

I flat enjoyed this beer, it's very inoffensive but is a tad sweeter than I like in my Gose, specifically.

Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of watermelon, tartness and hints of sea salt. Very tart flavor with lemon, watermelon and saltiness.

Cautiously picked up a 6 pack and glad I did. Poured as expected but generated a huge head. Smelled of watermelon and....saline(?). Taste is where this beer got interesting. Every sip started slightly tart and worked its way towards sour until it almost got annoying and overpowering before turning sweet with the watermelon flavor, and ended with a hint of salt. The watermelon was prominent but not overpowering. This beer was delicious and will be consumed until the hot weather here in Florida subsides or I can no longer find this beer! In my opinion this was a very well done gose!

Poured can into stange.

Appearance: Fizzy head doesn't last, not even a ring. Dull, pale yellow.

Nose: Watermelon, berries, barley

Taste: A syrupy watermelon sour, mostly. Malt back, but not prominent.

Feel: Tart, but refreshing. Insanely crushable.

There's not a lot to this beer, but it does what it does well. Sour beer fans will appreciate.

Mildly artificial fruit taste, however it's a great drinkable sour from a brewery that has never made one on a large scale.

I'll admit I was skeptical going into this one: a commercially produced Gose with watermelon. But it won me over on the first sip. Light, a bit sweet, a bit salty, and kissed by just the right amount of (natural-tasting) watermelon juice, it's a delightfully refreshing summer brew. And a fine example of the style.

I tend to be fond of Founders for their malt-forward beers principally, but this one gives me a new appreciation for what they can do, in a completely different arena, on a similarly large scale.
