Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each year we brew a beer to benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition held annually in our hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s beer is Green Zebra. Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

Founders Brewing Co. "Green Zebra"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON: 07.17.17..." and sampled on 08.14.17

Look: Slightly hazy yellow gold body beneath a short head of bright white that drops readily to just a thin collar and leaves little lacing behind.
Smell: Clean. Like citric acid and sugar with some light watermelon including the cut rind. Very much like powdered sour candy.
Taste: Very much as the aroma suggests with a little bit more watermelon flavor, but not much, and some other fruits (orange, lime/lemon, cherry). It's tart but not overdone, and well-balanced against the sweetish malt. Some salt is clear in the finish and stays on your lips. Low level bitterness. Dry, mildly acidic finish with lingering fruitiness.
Feel: Light-medium in body and gently crisp, but still sharp with acidity.
Overall: Surprisingly fruity and interesting, and very nicely balanced - not nearly as sharp and tangy as some gosebiers tend to be. Quite refreshing and exciting. Worth trying.

Pours very light yellow and is slightly hazy but still translucent. Nose heavy on watermelon. Tastes of lively carbonation and tart, slightly sour watermelon upfront with a sea salt finish. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt and juicy fruit.

12 oz can- Pours lightly hazy golden with a medium white head that holds better than expected based on the style, nice cobwebby lace and a good blanket retains. Aroma is pungent, salt, watermelon, although i could have thought strawberries if i didn't know that it was watermelon. The taste is watermelon off the bat, followed by a nice amount of tartness, then the saltiness presents itself, very layered beer, everything you want in this beer, is here. Very tasty stuff.

Pours a slightly cloudy yellow, darker than most Gose beers. Tight finger's worth of white head that falls quickly.

The smell - tartness, salty, watermelon. I actually wish the watermelon were a bit more prominent on the nose.

The taste is straightforward - I get a nice acid bite, sweet watermelon that is a little like candy, and a nice level of salt. Minimal bitterness.

The feel is light, but the sweetness keeps it from being quite as refreshing as I like in a gose.

Overall a good summer beer and en enjoyable change of pace. The mild tartness would be good for somebody who is new to sours - it is enough to notice without peeling your tongue raw. My wife doesn't care for most beers in the gose style, but she likes this beer. The watermelon and salt are a natural combination. Could be less candy-like in the aroma.

Have been burned by Watermelon beers before, but this one was not so bad. Watermelon is not cloying and fits nicely in back round. I could see this being a nice hot weather lawn mowing beer. Nothing overly exciting, but a descent brew.

Really enjoyed this as an easy-drinking summer beer. The watermelon is borderline jolly rancher, but straddles that line enough to not be cloying or artifical. Backbone is classic no-frills Gose, and the watermelon really landed for me as a tasty & refreshing compliment to the style.
