Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Each year we brew a beer to benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition held annually in our hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. This year’s beer is Green Zebra. Subtly sour and a little sweet, this ale is a refreshing take on a nearly extinct German style, gose. Watermelon is the highlight of this lightly-hopped treat and gives it a hint of satisfying juiciness. The soft mouthfeel and dry finish comes courtesy of the addition of sea salt, a traditional gose ingredient.

12oz into snifter.

A: Pours slight murky orangish golden with a billowing and dense cream colored head that slowly faded into a thin collar.
S: Sweet spritzy nose with notes of dry grains and sweet, slightly synthetic, notes of watermelon candy.
T: Wheat and dry grains up front followed by sweet candy/syrup-like flavors of watermelon. The finish has a kiss of salinity, and creamy yeast. The aftertaste has a hint of lemon juice, strawberry and apple. Flavors have a pixie stick type quality as well.
M: Chewy full body with very creamy and smooth mouthfeel with a kiss of tartness. Carb is moderate with a nice texture to it. Sweet overall.
O: A nice treat and well executed for a flavor that is typically hard to impart in a beer. Watermelon is a bit too candy like for me to want to drink this often, but this was fairly easy to drink with a solid flavor. Interesting mouthfeel that’s kinda tingly. I liked it.

A 12 fl. oz. can, canned on 8th August 2017. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A hazy golden colour with a two finger white head that had good retention and left nice lacing.

Aroma: Tart, candied watermelon with hints of wheat and salt.

Taste: Lightly tart, sweet watermelon hard candy, bubblegum and salt with an apple cidery finish.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: Although the salt tries to balance it out, this was still too sweet for my liking. Also the watermelon flavours were quite artificial, but I’d imagine that a beer with actual watermelon flavours wouldn’t taste like much. To be transparent, this is coming from someone who does not like watermelon.

12oz can served in a tulip. Canned 07.26.17.

Pours a clear light golden with a tiny head. Medium carbonation. Smell is fruity -- if I think about watermelon, I get it, but if I don't, I get strawberry. Light brine aroma.

Taste is a nice, refreshing light juicy, moderately sweet, more tart, light saltiness.

Mouthfeel is medium to light. Overall, nice solid beer.

From tasting notes 10/10/17
Had on-tap at Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids, MI

Appearance - Served up in a nonic pint, slight haze and golden yellow in color. Thin, broken layer of suds sit on the surface while a thin ring encircles the edge of the glass. Lacing is contained to a broken halo found at the top of the glass.

Smell - The aroma is tart and with funky acidity. Underlying watermelon and saltiness.

Taste - The flavor is undoubtedly sour- unfortunately it hits that range brings to mind gastric acid. Passive watermelon character. Solid amount of salinity.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with light, bitey carbonation and a crisp, dry finish.

Overall - I hate to say this, but the main flavor here tastes way too much like stomach acid. While there's some decent stuff going on here, it's hard to look past the constant reminder of bile.

Fairly tart, overly sweet, less gose-like than just artificial watermelon taste. Someone said it's sort of like a watermelon Jolly Rancher and I'd agree that it was for the first sip, but after that it was just overly sweet and strange tasting. Not terrible, but one of these is all I could drink at a time. It was ok.

I don’t typically like watermelon in beers, but this is a winner. That watermelon sweetness with the tart, sour gose base? Genius. It is absolutely like drinking a watermelon Jolley Rancher, so I’m not sure I would ever have more than one of these at a time. But as a go-between beer or palette cleanser, it’s fantastic. Tart, fruity, cider-esque, effervescent, tasty.
