Notes / Commercial Description:
For those of you familiar with the Solid Gold we’ve featured in our taproom for years, this is not the same beer. Our Brewmaster, Jeremy, completely revamped the recipe and it now features lager yeast, corn and lemondrop hops for just the right hit of flavor. Our take on a classic, Solid Gold is a drinkable golden lager brewed with the highest quality ingredients. Challenging what a lager can be? That’s something we won’t regret.

On tap at the brewery. As close as Founders will get to a lager, it reminded me of a dry hopped lager. Light yellow with no head, and a decent hop flavour. A faint hop aroma.Average mouthfeel. Nice summer beer.I am used to the understated hop taste of an English hopped bitter. Easy drinking, good flavour for sessionabl alcohol.

i was really looking forward to trying this one after seeing how hard they seem to be pushing it out there, but what a disappointment it ended up being! for one, its oddly malty for what it is, a couple of shades darker than its peers, more body, more sweetness and breadiness in the middle, and while normally more grain character in an adjunct lager would be an appealing thing, in this case it weighs down the beer and takes away much of its drinkability, at least for me, i was almost shocked at its darker color when i first laid eyes on my pint. the smell is sort of cheap and dirty, the lager yeast smells and tastes strained to me, less patient than i like in a pale lager, and the hops sort of clash, its trying to be too many things at once i think, and it ends up muddled and confused rather than subtly interesting. not good to me, better than some of the cheaper adjunct lagers, but i wanted a lot more from this. seems like founders has really dumbed some stuff down lately. i know this is selling like crazy, but its a miss in my opinion! so many better offerings out there to scratch this itch.

12 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 2/26/2018. Pours fairly crystal clean medium golden yellow color with a small foamy white head with solid retention, that reduces to a slight spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Good appearance. Aromas of lemon cracker, corn, white bread dough and lightly toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of melon, mint, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt/corn and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, citrus zest, cracker, corn, white bread dough and lightly toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of melon, mint, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, citrus zest, cracker, corn, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, mint, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt/corn and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and fairly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.4%. Overall this is a very good American pale lager style. All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt/corn and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful with a nice body for the ABV. The lemondrop hops certainly give it some unique character, a little odd at first but I liked it. Nice clean malt/corn flavors and nice hop presence for the style. Not overdone on adjuncts at all. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected.

Can nabbed at a beer store in Austin, TX.

20 IBUs. "Premium lager." 4.4% ABV. Canned 02.26.18.

Competent, with its corn adjunct well-disguised.

Extremely crisp, clean and highly refreshing, Founders brewmaster fills a void in their brewery portfolio with a classic American premium lager that's finally been updated.

Solid Gold strikes gold with a medium, bright golden appearance. Its creamy white froth sends a blend of cereal, spice and light fruit to the nose ahead of a crisp taste of fresh baking bread, corn chip and medium grain sweetness.

The sweetness bounces effortlessly from the palate while the remnants of grain continue to drift above the tastebuds with cereal and starch. A balancing hop bite brings a light and bitter spice to the finish with hints of lemon zest and apple to close.

Light bodied and carrying a remarkable thirst quenching property, the beer's brief aftertaste of corn chip and tea-like verbena resonates softly afterwards.

12oz can. Poured out a clear, golden-yellow color with a small, pillowy, white head of foam. It smelled of floral notes and grains. Sweet caramel taste with a mild bitterness.

Nothing really special here. On draught at the brewery. It's a solid patio beer on a hot day, and ale for when you may reach for a lager. Crackers, toasted bread, floral and spice lead me to believe this is noble hop driven.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale to medium golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and faint bright yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy bright white head that quickly reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled very thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly less than moderate aromas of cereal grain + bready malts with minimal amounts of sweetness and a light amount of corn adjuncts. Light hints of slightly fruity (apple) lager yeast and spicy + citrus/lemon zest hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly lighter than moderate flavors of cereal grain + bready malts with minimal amounts of sweetness and a light amount of corn adjuncts. Light flavors of slightly fruity (apple) lager yeast and light flavors of spicy + citrus/lemon zest hops which impart a light amount of lingering bitterness.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp with a clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and refreshing. Enjoyable but probably not something that I would be picking up with any regularity because I already have a favorite (cheaper) AAL option I gravitate towards.

Canned 2/05/18
Pours decent foamy bubbly head fades at a med pace, little soapy lacing, crystal clear straw color

Nose pretty light, hint of straw pilsner malt, toasty, mild herbal grassy hop

Taste mild toasty light malt, straw, hint of herbal grassy hop, little warmer lager fermentation almost skunky bitter note, otherwise very light, mild dry crisp finish, def don't let it warm or it gets an unpleasant skunky bitterness

Mouth is light, but not too thin, decent carb

Overall I can see what market they are targeting with this but def not something I would ever plan to drink again

Founders Brewing Company "Solid Gold"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON: 04.26.18 1404534" and sampled on 06.12.18
$1.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's slightly hazy which is surprising. I thought it would be filtered clear. The body is a deep gold and the head is a bright white. The head retention is unfortunately only slightly better than average, and not much lacing is left behind. The aroma is nice with some floral and very gently herbal hops over a lightly grainy malt base. It's clean and fresh and welcoming. The flavor brings in some additional lightly citrusy hop notes, and a little bit more grainy and lightly sweetish malt, and a hint of yeasty fruitiness. It's moderately bitter and nicely balanced, finishing mainly dry with some mildly floral and lemony hops lingering. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and gently crisp. Overall it's nicely put together and fairly well done - only its haze and lack of head retention and lacing hurt it. I'll a little bit surprised at how good it is but I'm still wondering who's buying it when there are comparable beers available for much less money.

12 oz can at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.
This is Founders' take on an American 'premium' lager, complete with some rice in the mix.
Smooth, medium+ body and near medium carbonation.
Well crafted but why bother¿... Similar beers are widely available.

Had on tap. Probably the best adjunct lager I have ever had. Remembering the ratings are based on style, here they are. Poured very clear gold. Smell was pretty nondescript, with faint lager yeast and lemon grass. Taste is sneaky hoppy but still very much a yeasty lager. Feel is thin, even for the style though
