Style: American Adjunct Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
For those of you familiar with the Solid Gold we’ve featured in our taproom for years, this is not the same beer. Our Brewmaster, Jeremy, completely revamped the recipe and it now features lager yeast, corn and lemondrop hops for just the right hit of flavor. Our take on a classic, Solid Gold is a drinkable golden lager brewed with the highest quality ingredients. Challenging what a lager can be? That’s something we won’t regret.

Looks good in the glass , but you know what looks can be ,large foamy head that became surface film in no time. Oh, and no lacing. Aroma was highly citrus , with no malt either in smell or taste. I do know that lagers are supposed to be balanced. The lemon drop hops were overkill .That was basically all there is to this. I know that Founders prides itself on NOT brewing to style , but hey , if your going to do that , then at least put the word lager in quotes. I should have learned a few months ago when I ordered a draught of their "Pilsner" , and it tasted like grapefruit juice. If Solid Gold was a gladiator ,sorry , thumbs down.

From the bottom of the can: "CANNED ON: 04.26.18046844" The last few numbers were a bit rubbed off.

Appearance: The body of the beer is a medium-dark shade of gold with a slight haze to it. It has a short white cap that bubbles loosely with sparse foam. It slowly fizzles out to a bunch of disconnected bubbles that cling to the surface of the glass and beer.

Aroma: It has a nice herbal hop scent that is very distinct. It has a noble hop character to it which is just a bit spicy. It is enticing.

Taste: There is a very light bit of pine flavor and some very light lime. There is a touch of a woody or mossy character to the beer. It is very pleasant. There is a light floral character to the beer.

Mouthfeel: The body is the upper side of light with just a touch of slickness. Very low bitterness with a wet finish.

Overall: It's a nice take on a Premium Lager. It has good flavors and it is enjoyable to drink. It could use a drier body with a crisper finish but otherwise it is nice. I would drink it again from time to time and I would recommend at least trying it if you enjoy something that leans closer to a Czech-style hopping in a Lager.

L - Golden with a little hazy and mostly opqaue, with a thin white, fizzy head that dissipates quickly - no real lacing to speak of.
S - Malt and yeast with a very faint hint of hops. The smell is pretty faint.
T - Malt and yeast along with a faint hint of hops along with hints of lemon and biscuit. Not too strong on the flavor though - it's somewhat watery.
F - Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. The feel is actually pretty decent however and would be refreshing on a hot summer day.
O - For the style, this is pretty good, overall it's really a poor effort from Founder's in my opinion. Sure there's more flavor than most for the style, I just feel that they could have done way better. Personally, I'd prefer a Sam Adams to this - even a modelo Especial.

12oz can into Wide-mouthed mason jar
Canned on 2/6/18
L- pours a 'solid' gold with thin lacy white head
S- sweet creamy aroma
T- similar to nose, with real nice subtle hop presence
F- light-bodied but not watery, super easy drinking
Overall i might start drinking this instead of water....lol

A: A very standard AAL appearance. Clear golden, fresh, and bubbly.

S: Moderate lemongrass and malt. Some hops in the background. Definitely smells better than the mass production AAL.

T: Biscuity malts and a slight lemony characters. Noticeable presence of hops for the style.

M: Awesome. Full bodied for this style, not thin, excellent carbonated.

Light, crisp and easy drinking. Not much flavor, but has a nice bitter finish. Not much flavor, but not bad. Could probably slug a ton of these out on the golf course.

3/17/18: 12 oz can courtesy of my brother poured into pint glass. Heavy carbonation, light white head, clear blond pour. Light, sweet bread, corn aroma. Very light taste, corn. Thin, slick mouth feel. Overall OK pilsner.

Consumed 5/8/18

A: Medium gold - crystal clear, as it should be - pours with a medium sized white head, fades to a small collar and a wispy cap

S: More or less smells like a macro lager except cleaner and with more hops - pale malts, pale grains, and some corn - very mild notes of lager yeast - grassy, but more lemony hops - not much else, which I suppose is the point - the grains and lemon really stick out

T: Clean, pale malts and pale grains - bread and crackers spritzed with lemon - I'm not really sure why lemondrop hops were used here, as the citrusy lemon seems a bit weird - light notes of lager yeast - more citrusy lemon and a touch of grass - tea with a slice of lemon in it - low bitterness - touch of sweetness - finishes with some lightly sweet, effervescent corn

M: On the light side of medium, medium carbonation, could be more crisp and could finish cleaner

O: Solid, but what karat?

I, for one, welcome craft brewers attempting to make/re-invent the American adjunct lager. But I can't say I particularly love what Founders has done here. This kind of reminds me of their PC Pils in the sense that it is very easy to drink. Except PC Pils has a great hop profile. This has a hop profile that kind of adds a spritz of lemon to a pile of grains and corn. Huh?
