A: beautiful gold under a fat white head; settles into a bubbly film with ample lace

S: crisp hops and bright yeast; notes of citrus and wood

T: dry and crisp grapefruit and pine; subdued sweetness

M: full, creamy, nice dry/sweet balance

O: I'd forgotten how good an Imperial IPA this was - been quaffing down Palate Wreckers, 471's, 90 Minute IPAs, Shipyard's XXXX, and the like for some time now without returrning to an old favorite. As is true with most? all? Founders brews, this is a top-notch beer.

Nose: Briefly yeasty and bready, but quickly overpowered by sweet, crisp citric hops. Lightly caramelly malt mingles with blueberry and blackberry esters that are mild, but present. Very crisp and fresh.

Appearance: Hazy blonde-gold with no head, just a ring of bubbles around the edge.

Taste: Very bitter and deep. Dank and woody - slight grapefruit dryness, but the taste is largely chlorophyllic and dark green. Alcohol bite and some minor berry characteristics provide some balance and the mild sugaryness of the malts is briefly, vaguely caramelly. Mildly astringent and semi-dry.

Overall: A heavy-handed dose of hops in this. Big and bitter, but some balance would have been nice - though maybe that's just my mood.

Bright, golden yellow in color and hazy. Poured with a short white foam that quickly reduced to a wispy cap. Pungent citrus hop aromas, grapefruit, ripe pineapple, with an underlying malt sweetness and pine hop aromas at the back end. Aroma gets boozy as this warms. Medium bodied with rich carbonation. Slightly resinous up front and creamier through the middle. Pine hop flavors up front that allow a citrus hop blast thru the middle the rides all the way to the end as the pine hop flavor returns. Pine hop bookends with citrus in between. Finishes with tongue clenching hop bitterness that lingers. Easily one of my favorite doubles.

Pours light hazy straw with a finger of white head. Dissipates to a thin layer. Not much lacing, spotty at best.

Smell is awesome. Grapefruit, florally, bitter rinds. Wow, intense! It doesn't get much better than this.

Taste follows the smell nicely. Grapefruit dominates. Only thing that might improve it would be a stronger malt backbone, but the hops are displayed brilliantly.

Medium body. Drying finish leaving a pleasant bitterness on back of tongue.

Solid IIPA. My first brew from Founders. Was looking for KBS, but fell upon this and was pleasantly surprised. Worth a try for sure if you like this style.

12oz bottle poured into Delirium tulip

A - Vigorous pour yeilds soft, white head about 1 finger in height. Dissipates quickly leaving a slight collar with minimal evidence of lacing. Beer pours a slightly hazy yellow.

S - Possibly due to its age (about 3 months since bottling) the hops are mild but present. Fruity but faint.

T - Flavor profile follows the nose quite closely. Fruitiness is apparent first followed by a mild hop bit towards the end. Hops dont linger long but provide a nice aftertaste. Pleasant but think its past its window.

M - Smooth and creamy. Velvety until the end when the hops finally announce themselves. I feel confident this would be a marked difference if fresh.

O - Kept waiting to drink several of my IPA/IIPA with a buddy but schedules just didnt permit so I am making my way through them. This beer is tasty and as its a Founder's brew I am sure its amazing at its peak. However due to its age now, its not what it should be (my fault not the beers). Rating is based on this one but will be revised once I lay hands on a fresher version. It's Founder's...its got to be good!
