On tap

L: lingering thin head. Beautiful color letting just a little light through, but ruby highlights in a dark brown brew

S: there is no other beer that showcases bourbon barrel aging like this one. Bourbon and brown sugar smell, and if you love bourbon you'll love this scent

T: a touch sweet, but to be expected with a scotch ale. Bourbon still shines through in the taste, along with more brown sugar, plums, and maybe a touch of tartness?

F: no complaints, not thin at all, lingers on the tongue

O: one of my favorites. Looking forward to stocking up every time it's in season

Very disappointed with this one. Should have been labeled Bourbon Bastard, because that is what DOMINATED this beer. The smell reminds you of...bourbon, and the taste profile is that of a watery bourbon.

A 355ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2014. Purchased a while back from Trembling Madness in York. I'm hoping a beer of this strength doesn't deteriorate too readily.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A dark reddish-brown hue with tons of chunky floating sediment (possibly protein) and medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.

S: Aroma of rich, boozy bourbon and sweet malt. Notes of bourbon, caramel malt, oak/wood, vanilla, raisins, dried fruit, brown sugar, yeast esters, stewed leaves and a warming whiff of alcohol. Rather nice.

T: Tastes of sweet, bourbon-laden malt with a lingering finish. Notes of caramel malt, bourbon, oak, vanilla, raisins, dried fruit, brown sugar, fruity yeast esters, stewed leaves and booze. A touch of alcoholic harshness in the background. Quite sweet, followed by a leafy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and a nice, thick body. Pretty astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of boozy bourbon, wood, stewed leaves and mild caramel malt.

O: A potent brew; should've been called Backwoods Moonshine. So-so looks, while the aroma and flavour are an impressive blend of bourbon, wood, caramel malt and fruitiness. Seriously boozy - enjoyable but a tad harsh on the palate. Nice body; could be livelier. A good beer but I reckon the malt is overshadowed and the bourbon character could be dialled back a bit for balance. A good demonstration of why stouts endure bourbon-barrel aging better. Nonetheless, a worthy beer that deserves to be sampled.
