Backwoods Bastard pours a deep ruddy brown, with a sliver of tan foam. It's evident that the carbonation is moderately light, and there are fine granules floating within as well. It's worth noting that this is the October 2012 bottling and I am reviewing it in August 2014... It has been stored properly.

The aroma is very enchanting, at first reminding me of caramel apples from the fair, with molasses, dark fruits, a touch of bitterness, and a nice splash of bourbon, too.

The flavor is far more rich and roasty than anticipated... I am impressed with the way the bourbon simply accentuates rather than overpowers the malts. There is a subtle caramel sweetness on my tastebuds followed by a sharp, almost herbal bitterness for the finish. It feels moderately heavy but smooth, and the ABV is hidden quite craftily.

Overall, quite the total package - a quality, true-to-style Wee Heavy with the lovely addition of the barrel aging. Pick this one up in the coming months!

Poured from the bottle into my KtG snifter. Bottled 9/2011.

Appeared a dark brown color with a 1 finger, light brown head that dissipated quickly.

Immediately hit with strong bourbon scents, followed by some butterscotch, toffee, molasses, and a bit of char.

Taste is exceptional. Sweet up front giving way to more creamy vanilla flavors. Finishes with a bit of a hop bit and a slow bourbon burn. Incredibly complex yet balanced.

Moutfeel is good - not too syrupy but not too thin either. Carbonation has held up well.

Overall - this is fantastic. I love what a few years have done to this one. Bourbon has died down considerably from when it is fresh which has balanced it much more and made it a bit more drinkable. Fantastic!
