Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.60%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) is the epitome of why we launched the Backstage Series: to bring some of our most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup.

Had a couple of these today on-tap at 33. What a pleasure!

Poured a deep purple black with a rich tan head. Healthy lacing all around.

Beautiful aroma of dark chocolate, maple syrup, bourbon, and coffee.

With each rich and creamy sip I experienced dark chocolate, bourbon, maple syrup, vanilla, dark cherries, molasses, and coffee. The 9.4% alcohol is definitely present.

Full bodied, thick and creamy, with a light carbonation.

A top-notch Impy stout from Founders which I consider myself lucky to try. Enjoyable in a St. Louis summer. I can only imagine this in the heart of winter.

Multiple pours at Founders

A: CBS pours a rich, inky black with a tan or khaki head

S: Oozes maple syrup, lightly caramelized vanilla, and creamy milk chocolate. Heavenly stuff.

T: Tastes like the world's best milk chocolate bar that's been soaked in maple syrup and bourbon. Rich fudge and coffee notes. Tons of milk chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and maple syrup.

M: Mouthfeel is rich, creamy, luscious, thick, slick, and oily. Endlessly drinkable.

O: One of the best beers I've ever had.

2011 bottle release. Poured into dogfish sig glass

A - jet black no light. 4 finger mocha head on first pour. Really large bubbles. Dissapted quickly

S - lots or roasted coffee, slight oak and vanilla. More of the bourbon and maple comes thru as it warms

T - bitter coffee upfront, smoothest into maples sweetness and tinge of bourbon. Little bit or oaky vanilla

M - smooth and creamy

O - really impressed. Lived up to the hype for me. Sting coffee notes of fresh FBS w thr bourbon notes of KBS, then all dipped in maple.

An oily thick viscous black pour glugs out of the bottle and into my snifter. A healthy brown head appears and then turns into a nice halo on my glass. Aroma is immediately of maple and chocolate. Taste is of sweet maple, brownie batter and some oaky-vanilla.As it warms the coffee flavor shines through. What I like is it doesn't taste like the burnt coffee flavor I got from the FBS. For as thick and syrupy these flavors sound this beer has such a nice light drinkability... even though its flavors coat the mouth and linger quite long. This beer is amazing but the availability of it drives me crazy. I wish I could get it a little easier... but that might take away from the experience. Overall this is a perfect stout and I would change nothing about it. (except its availability).

The darkest of brown, combined with black that makes a solid full 3/4" of tan head on it. Impressive as they come for barrel aged appearance.

Aroma was decadent, coffee, maple, bourbon, chocolate, oak.

The maple sweetness, heavy roasted malt, bitterness, chocolate, wood, and coffee in a lesser way, all really make for an insanely drinkable brew. Mild tobacco notes counter balance. An excellent breakfast beer.
